POST-DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 191%..
Application filed October 26, 1916. Serial No. 127,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK HENERY BUDcEoN, of Carstairs, in the Province of Alberta, in the Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and BEN- JAMIN COLE l/VRIGHT, of the same place, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in post drivers, and the object of our invention is to construct a portable post driver, and mount the same for transportation, in such readily adj usted irrespective of the location of the platform so that the post may be held and driven into the ground in a vertical position, and broadly considered it comprises a derrick adjustably mounted in a frame which is preferably carried by a portable platform, means being provided to adjust the derrick in the desired position and hold it in adjustment, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our preferred form of construction showing the derrick and its frame carried by a suitable platform; Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross-section on the line 22, Fig. 1.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is any suitable platform and the same may be mounted on a suitable truck or skids (not shown) for transportation purposes. Since the particular construction of the platform forms no part of our invention we do not particularly illustrate the same. The derrick B is of any suitable construction, and the same is adjustably carried by the frame C, which is supported by the platform A. Our means for adjustably mounting the derrick on the frame C comprises a T-shaped member D, the shank E of which is journaled in the plate F, which is secured to the horizontal member G of the frame 0. The head 2 of the T-shaped member D carries at each end the plates 3, secured to the sides of derrick B. The construction described permits the derrick to be moved laterally on the shank E as well as backward and forward on the head 2. In order to move the derrick laterally, any suitable mechanism may be employed; suitable means for this purpose comprises a bellcrank lever 4:, pivoted at 5 to bracket 6. The forward end of the lever a is provided with an eye 7 through which projects the arm 8 suitably secured to the derrick. The dotted line 9 represents a lever co-aoting with a toothed quadrant 10 represented by the dotted arc, and coupled to the lever 9 is a connecting rod 11 which is coupled to the free end of the lever a. understood that through the movementof the lever 9 and the connecting parts the position of the derrick B will be readily adjusted on the shank E.
To adjust the derrick on the head 2 suitable means may be used. Our preferred means comprises a link 12, carried by the plate 13, suitably secured to the derrick, and this link is connected by the connecting rod 14 to a lever represented by the dotted line 15 which co-acts with the quadrant represented by the dotted are 16. By backward or forward movement of the lever 15, corresponding movement is given to the derrick. The eye 7 is constructed to permit of the movement just. described of the derrick, without binding against the arm 8. Mounted within the derrick is the usual monkey 17 connected by a rope or cable 18 to any suitable drum (not shown) carried by the platform A. This monkey is of course operated in the usual way to drive the post.
The platform A of course will be supported the required distance above the ground. In order to permit the post to be readily placed, the derrick is provided with side doors 19 suitably swung as by hinges 20 to the derrick. When these doors are opened the post is positioned as shown by dotted lines, after the derrick has been properly adjusted, and then when the post is positioned, the side doors are closed and form guides for the post. Any suitable means may be employed to hold the side doors closed. The preferred means comprises a U-shaped keeper 21, pivoted in the brackets 22, carried by the derrick. To release the doors 19 the side members 23 of the keeper are moved into vertical position out of contact with the doors.
From the foregoing specification, it will be understood that even though the ground may be uneven upon which the platform is supported, by adjusting the derrick as We propose, we are enabled to support the post any It will be in vertical position so that it will be properly placed or driven in the ground.
This invention is inexpensive to manufacture, and more posts can be driven thereby than can be set out in the old way.
It will be understood by one skilled in this art that the platform A must be mounted so that the same may be turned. Many types of turning means may be employed, but as this forms no part of our invention specifically we do not illustrate the same. It will be understood that some turning means is necessary for the platform A so as to complete the adjustment of the derrick B.
What we claim as our invention is:
In a post driver, the combination with a platform; a frame carried thereby, and a hollow derrick provided at its lower end at each side with a hinged door, of means whereby said derrick is pivoted to said frame to permit of lateral and back-andforth movements, comprising a T-shaped member composed of a shank and a head; means whereby said shank is journaled on said frame; means carried by said derrick whereby the same is movably mounted on said head; lever mechanism coupled to said derrick below the mounting means therefor whereby saidclerrick is adjusted back and forth, and lever mechanism carried by said platform and coupled to said derrick near the lower end thereof to give the necessary lateral adjustment.
In testimony whereof we have afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK HENERY BUDGEONf BENJAMIN COLE WRIGHT.
