JAMES C. MICI-IIE, OF NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA.
ooMPoUND Toon Specification of Letters Patent.'
Application filed November 21, 1916. Serial 1\1o.`12,5'74.V
To all whom z' may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MICHIE, a citizen of v the United States, residing at Newport News,.in the county of Varwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inCompound Tools; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichA it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesl to-new and usefulz improvements in compound tools and. the. principal object of the invention is to provide a device combining a square, try-square and tape line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a square having a novelly constructed butt in which the miter square is pivotally mounted in order that the same may be moved to various angles with relation thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide a butt which is adapted to hold the tape line in such a position as to avoid damage thereto and which has a guide arranged thereon as a means for limiting the lateral movement of the tape line.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device having a clip for supporting a pencil in place.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consistsI in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of try-square constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device from the opposite side of Fig. 1 and showing the pivoted blade partly opened.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 34-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the butt showing the lower end thereof broken away to illustrate the method of cutting away a portion of the square to accommodate the 'try-square blade.
Referring to therdrawing the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the butt of the square while the numeral 2 designates the blade thereof. The butt 1 comprises a pair of channel sections 3 and 4 which are riveted to the angular body 5 of the blade 2. The lower end of this body is provided with the angularly extending portions 6` and for Patented Nov. 13, 1917. i
accommodatingthe miter square whichwill be more fully hereinafter described,A and is shorter Athan the channel sections so that the adjustable blade may be accommodated therein. F ormedin the vweb portions of the channel sections near theirouter ends are suitable openingsl Sfor the reception of a ybolt' 9"forming.the pivot bolt the adjustable blade designated by the'numeral 10. .This bolt has threaded thereon a nut 11 so that the` blade be heldv in various. adjusted positions by tightening said nut. As shown in the drawing the blade is provided with a longitudinal slot 12 through which the bolt extends and the free end of said blade is beveled as at 13 so as to engage the inner edge of the stationary blade when the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1 in order to provide a miter square.
A suitable clip 14 is riveted or otherwise attached to one of the channel sections and is adapted to hold a pencil 15 in place therein, while the opposite channel section is provided with slits 16 forming a tongue 17 which is bent over and against one of the fianges to provide a guide for the tape line designated by the numeral 17 which is wound on a reel 18. A suitable spring 19 is riveted to the flange opposite that provided with the guide and the free end of said spring bears against the tape line to hold the same in various adjusted positions. The outer end of said tape line is provided with a pencil socket 2O while the opposite end is wound upon a spring wheel contained within the housing 18.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the device may be used as an ordinary square by placing the butt against a straight edge and extending the blade across the strip upon which the device is being used and when it is desired to make a miter cut, it will be seen that the device is used in the same way except that the edge of the miter blade is used as the guide. Upon using the tape measure it will be evident that the same may be pulled outwardly by grasping the pencil socket and exerting pull on the same and the outward movement of said pencil socket will cause the tape to pass through the guide and beneath the spring which engages and holds said tape in various positions. When it is desired to re-v turn the tape it will be evident that a slight pressure is brought against the inner side of the spring thus forcing the same free of the tape and allowing the same to return to Wound position. It will also be evident that when so desired the point of the pencil may be inserted in the pencil socket and the tape Ydrawn out to the desired length thus placing the pencil in proper position for use in order that a mark may be made at the end of the tape thus insuring accurate measurement. It will also be evident that in using the pencil in this manner the same will act as a handle for the tape measure.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as Will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is A square comprising a body, a blade formed integrally at one end of the body and extending angularly therefrom, channel members attached to the body on opposite sides, said body and channel members forming the butt of the square, said body having its end remote from the blade beveled to form two edges inclined to its sides, a miter blade pivotally and slidably ymounted between the bight portions of the channel members and a bolt and nut for holding said blade in Various adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
