Be it known that I, LUDWIG GosHIn, a subject of the King of Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York. borouglrof Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
This invention relates to looks, and has for an object the provision of improved construction which prevents a burglar, or other unauthorized person from forcing the bolt back after it has once been projected into its keeper.
Another object in view is to provide a pivotally mounted attachment for the end of the bolt which will allow the bolt to freely reciprocate under ordinary circumstances, and also allow the bolt to freely iove back into the lock casing when the door is closed. but will prevent any one from engaging the inclined surface of the bolt for forcing the bolt back into the casing.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a lock with certain parts broken away, same being shown in connection with a door and door jamb.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, except that the parts are in a different position.

Fig. i is a fragmentary side view of the bolt shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a door and 2 the door jamb. The lock casing 3 and parts mounted therein are secured to the door by any suitable means, as for instance by screws 4, and the keeper 5 is secured by any suitable means, as for instance by screws 6, to the jamb 2. Casing 3 contains any suitable mechanism for operating the bolt 7, a handle 8 being used for drawing the bolt from the inside, while a suitable key may be provided for withdrawing the bolt from the outside, the same not being shown, as it forms no part of the present invention. The bolt 7 is provided with an inclined or beveled face 9 as is usual with bolts of this kind, so that the door may be slammed shut even though the bolt is in its outer position, the beveled face 9 causing the bolt to move into the ass ing as shown in Fig. 2. The usual spring 10 is provided for forcing the bolt outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 as soon as the door has been completely closed. In constructing the head of the bolt 7, the face 9 is cut away at 11 for accommodating the' plate 12, which plate is pivotally connected to the bolt 7 by a pivotal pin 13, which pin is surrounded by a spring 11 having one end acting on the bolt 7 in the chamber or cutaway portion 15, and the opposite end acting on the plate 12 for urging the plate to the position shown in Fig. 1. Plate 12 is provided with a pair of upstanding lugs 16 accommodating the pin 17, which pin passes through one end of the pivotally mounted locking arm 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The locking arm 18 extends from an aperture 19 and is provided with a head '20 which acts against the keeper 5 so as to limit the outward movement thereof and hold the head in such position that in case a knife or other instrument is forced through the space 22 for forcing back the bolt 7, said knife will engage the plate 12 and push longitudinally on the arm 18 so that the head 20 will strike against the keeper 5 and thereby prevent any movement of the bolt 7. In order to accommodate the head 20 when the bolt is being forced back as shown in Fig. 2, the casing 3 is provided with a notch 23. This notch is comparatively narrow and will not affect the sliding motion of the bolt 7, as it is merely wide enough to accommodate the arm 18 when moved into closed position. The plate 12 is caused to move to a position similar to Fig. 4: by the spring 14, but is prevented from moving a further distance than will bring the same substantially parallel with the back of the head of the bolt, or in other words, in a position substantially at a 45 degree angle to the face 9. The means I for limiting the movement caused by the spring 14 is the lug or projection 21 against which the rear of the plate strikes as shown in Fig. 4.
What I claim is:
1. In a lockof the character described, the combination with a locking mechanism including a-bolt having a beveled face and a. keeper, of a plate pivotally mounted on said bolt and in line with the opening between the keeper and the locking mechanism when the bolt is in its outer position, and an arm connected with said plate and positioned on said bolt so as to engage said keeper when the bolt is in outer position for preventing movement of the plate and bolt by an instrument inserted between the keeper and the locking mechanism.
