INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. MANTELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines and has for its principal object, to provide an improved and novel type of valve mechanism for the admission and exhaust ports; to provide a simple and positive rotary valve.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specifications, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gasolene engine with my improved valve mechanism shown with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an under side face plan of the valves and ports of my device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line XX of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 indicates the cylinder casting of a gasolene engine having four cylinders with pistons, etc. The upper member or cylinder head 2 is provided with intake ports 3 and exhaust ports 4. The said ports communicate directly with the top of the cylinders and are normally covered by valves 5. Valves 5 are each provided with a port 6. Valves 5 fit within the cylinder and up against the under face of head 2. Valve stems 7 are integral with valves 5 and extend upward through sleeves 8 which fit snugly within housings 9 which in turn are screwed into cylinder head 2. Washers 10 and 11 are fitted around stems 7, the former bear against the tops of housing 9. From the upper sides of washers 11 pins 12 extend into openings in the under side of gears 13 which are secured to stems 7 by any convenient means. Springs 14 tend to spread gears 13 and washers 11 apart with Specification of Letters Patent.

the result that the gears and valves are raised until the valves fit snugly against the under side of the heads. The proper adj ustments are made between the washers and the housings bv screwing the said housings up or down as the case may be. The gears 13 are all driven by a series of similar gears 16 which are mounted on a shaft 17 and which shaft is driven by a chain and sprocket connection 18 from the crank shaft of the engine. All of the valves are set in the desired order of sequence as to their uncovering of the intake and exhaust ports. Once the valves are properly set and timed, they are positively rotated by previously mentioned means, in unison with the action of the engine pistons. The adjustability of my valves, together with their positive action are important features.
WVhile I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the class described, which includes a plurality of similar cylinders having inletand outlet ported heads, the combination of a ported disk valve having a stem and arranged adjacent the inside of each of said cylinder heads, the ports in said valve being adapted to register in rotation alternately with said inlet and outlet ports, adjustable supporting and retaining means for holding each valve against its cylinder head, said means including a plain sleeve around the said stem and a threaded housing which fits around said sleeve and screws into a threaded opening in the cylinder head, whereby the housing may be adjusted longitudinally the valve stem independently of the said sleeve.
