Be it known that l, VVILLIAM C. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Frees Ink-Fountains, of which the following is aspec1fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partthereof. I
This invention relates generally to diskplaten job printing-presses and, more particularly, to certain new and useful improvements in ink-fountains especially adapted for use in connection with presses of the klnd stated.
One of the objects of my present nvention is to provide a disk-platen printing-press with an ink-fountain with which the type inking or feeding rolls, of which there are usually a plurality, in their upward travel toward the main inking-disk are each adapted to engage or contact with the fountain roll in advance of reaching the inking-disk, whereby ink from the fountain is evenly and smoothly distributed by the inking-rolls upon and over the inking-disk, the several inking rolls in their upward travel each carrying a 'daub of ink from the fountain and, to a certain extent, spreading the same upon the disk and in their downward travel toward the type further spreading or CllStIlb uting over the disk the ink carried thereupon by the rolls in their upward travel.
Another object-of my present invention is to provide a printing-press of the kind mentioned with an ink-fountain which is adapted to be alternately, in and during the operation of the press, thrown 0r rockedinto and out of operative ink-supplying position relatively to the type-inking or feedingrolls, so that the inking-rolls will engage with the fountain roll only when and as the inkingrolls travel upwardly toward the inking-disk of the press,'the inking-rolls traveling in front of the fountain-roll, but without engaging or contacting therewith, when traveling downwardly to ink the type, whereby the type is uniformly inked throughout and daubs of ink upon the type avoided and heater and cleaner printing-jobs obtained. A further object of my present invent on is to provide aprinting-press of the kind stated with an ink-fountain which is adapted to be thrown or rocked into and out of operative inlrsupplying position relatively to the type-inking or feeding rolls simultaneously with and as the throw-elf lever of vention is to provide an ink-fountain for.
presses of the kind referred to which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in form and construction, and which is adapted to be conveniently attached operatively upon the press.
With the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in certain novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the said drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the sveral views, my ink-fountain isespecially adapted for use with diskplaten job printing-presses of present standard construction; and 1 have here shown only such parts of a press of the kind mentioned necessary for the purpose of illustrating the operative connection therewith of an ink-fountain embodying my invention. ()f the press shown, 1 indicates a portion of the frame. Pivoted upon the frame 1 is the type-bed portion 2 of the press. Journaled upon the press-portion 2, is the usual back cross-shaft 3, mount-ed upon each end of which is a roller-frame l, the rollenfranms d, which are connected by a rear cross-piece 5, supporting and carrying the type-inking or feeding rolls 6, three in number in the present machine. Suitably journaled upon the press is a disk or gear 7, pivot-ally attached eccentrically at one end to which is a rod 8 also iv'otally attached at its other end to an offset 9 on shaft 3. Pivotally fastened at one end to a fixed part of the press is an arm 10 having its other end pirotally attached to an upwardly projecting portion 11 of the roller fraine Suitably mounted for rotation upon the press portion 2 is the usual inain inking disk 12.
In the operation of the press, as will be understood, on the rotation of gear or disk 7, the roller fraines 1 will be rocked to carry the inking rolls 5 upwardly upon disk 12, then downwardly upon disk 12 and across the type-bed 1 3 ofthe pr ss, and then upwardly again, etc. 11 indicates f the press, the throw-off lever, which is suitably pivoted upon the frame 1. Pivotally fastened at one end to'the lower end of lever 1-1 and at its other end to an arm 1-3 pirotally mounted upon the frame 1 is a link 1G. 1? indicates a bell-crank lever also piroted upon the frame 1, one arm 18 of lever 1'? being longitudinally provided with a slot 18, working in which slot 18 is a roller 19 mounted on the arm 15. Piyot'ally attached at its lower end to the other arm 20 of lever 11, and at its other end to 9 of shaft 3, is a rod 21.
Nornially, as when lever let is in the position thereof shown in Fig; 1, the platen (not shown) of the press and the type-bed will, in the operation of the press, be alternately brought into and out of printing position relati ely to each other; on throw-off lever 11', however, being actuated to the left or in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, the back shaft 3 will, through the parts described, be rotarily nioyed to a certain extent suflicientiy to throw the type-bed portion 2 of the press out of printing position relatively to the platen, should the press be continued in operation, all as will be fully understood.

Disposed longitudinally of the box and threaded through its rear wall 23, is one or more adjusting screws adapted to engage at their forward ends with plate 26 to adjust the position of the forward end of plate 26 relati ely to roller 28 to regiilate the flow of ink from the fountain. Bottom wall 22 provided with a depending log 30 which is adapted to adjustably seat in a longitudinal recess or slot 31 provided in an elongated strip or plate 31, the box being adjus' =bly secured to plate 31 as by means of a bolt 32. The strip or plate 31 is provided with a depending eye 53 adapted to be pii'otally fastened to suitable perforated ears as on a second plate or strip 35. This plate 35 is provided longitudinally at its rear end with a slot, as at 36, to adjustably receive a fastening bolt 37 for securing the fountain upon the press. Interposed between the plates 31 and 35 at their forward end, and
suitably held in position, as by means of a stud 35, is a coiled spring 36 adapted to yieldingly inaintaiir plate 31 and the fountain box mounted thereupon in properly spaced relation from lower plate 35-. The plate and the parts just described are adjustably fastened upon the typebed portion 2 of thepre'ss at a suitable point below disk 12 and in operative position relatively to inking rolls '6, so that the inking rollers 6', in their upward travel toward disk 12, will engage with fountain roll 28in adiance of reaching inking disk Further, each roller 6, in its upward travel, will in turn engage with fountain roll 28 and carry a da'ub of ink therefrom to and upon the disk 12, the rollers 6, in their continued upi v .rd travel spreading upon the disk 12 the 1111*. so carried thereupon, and afterward, in their downward travel, further spreading upon the disk the ink so carried thereupon by the rolls 6 in their upward travel, w iereby the ink upon the disk 12 is evenly and smoothly distributed thereupon and daubs of ink avoidedupon the rollers G and consequently also upon the type.

through ratchet wheel 42 and its cooperating pawl 43, be step by step rotated to present a fresh ink supplying surface to the type inking ,or feeding rolls 6 as the same are moved upwardly to carry ink from the fountain to the disk 12.

Threaded into collar 44 at approximately right angles to each other is a pair of rockerarms 48 and 49, the arm 48 being provided with a lateral extension 50.

I
The inking rolls 6 having reached their uppermost position upon the disk 12 ant roller frames t being now, in the operation of the press, actuated to carry the rollers 6 down from disk 12 andacross thetypebed, the roller frames will, at their crosspiece 5, engage with the rocker arm 49 and throw the same into the position thereof illustrated in Fig. 7. In such movement .of rocker arm t9, collar fr-l: will be rotarily moved on shaft 3 to bring its cam-portion -15 beneath roller 5%, whereupon the fountain will be thrown, against the resiliency or tension of spring 86, into the position thereof illustrated in'Fig. 7 out of the path of rollers 6, so that said rollers 6 in traveling toward the type 2 will escape any contact or engagement with the fountain roller 98. Thus I avoid daubs of ink being carried upon the type from the fountain and obtain cleaner and ncater printing jobs.
On the roller frames being againactuated to carry rollers 6 upwardly, the roller frame 4 shown will engage with extension 50 of arm 48, throwing the same from the position thereof shown in Fig. 7 to the position thereof shown in Fig. 8. In such movement of arm 48, collar it will be reversely moved ,on shaft 3 to carry its cam-portion from beneath roller 54, whereupon the fountain, under the influence of spring 36,
will return to in: supplying position relatively to the inking rolls 6, the fountain roll 2- being then in the path of rolls 6 as the latter are caused to move upwardly.

TVhen, however, throw-off lever ll is actuated to throw the platen and type-bed out of printing relation, collar with its supporting shaft 3, will be rotarily moved to bring cam-portion 56 thereof beneath roller 57, whereupon the fountain box and its roll 28 will be depressed, against the tension of spring 36, into non-ink supplying position relatively to the inking rollers 6, and held in such position as long as lever 1% is in throw off position, so that, should the press be continued in operation, rollers 6 in their travel will escape any contact with the fountain roll 28.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a printing-press of the kind described, the same including a back-shaft and an oscillatory roller-frame and inking-roll, of an ink-fountain pivotally mounted upon the press, the fountain including an ink-supplying roll, means for yieldingly maintaining the fountain andits roll in ink-supplying posit-ion relatively to the inking-roll on the oscillation of the inking-roll from the type-bed of the press, and means actuated by the roller-frame for pivotally rocking the fountain and its roll out of ink-supplying position relatively to the inking-roll on the oscillation of the inking roll toward said type-bed, said last-named leans including a cam-member on the bacln shaft and a member on the fountain adapted to coopeate with said cam-member.

The combination with a printing-press of the kind described, the same including a back-shaft and an oscillatory roller-frame and inking-roll, of an ink-fountain pivotally mounted on the press, the fountain in cluding an ink-supplyirig-roll, a collar rotata-rily movable on said shaft, said collar having' a cam-portion, a roller on the fountain adapted for engagement with the camportion of the collar, reciier-arins on said collar, said arms being actuated by the roller frame in its oscillations to more the cam-portion of the collar into and out of engagement with said roller to rock the fountain and its roll out of inlt-supplying position relatively to said inking-roll on the oscillation of th i ingroll toward the type-bed of the pi es, and spring for yie l ingl returning the fountain auc its roll into ink-supplying position relatively to the inking-roll on the oscillation of said inle ing-roll from said type-bed.
The combination with a printing-press of the kind described, including its inking roll and throw-off mechanism, of an inkfountain movably mounted on the press intermediate the type-bed and inking-disk thereof, the fountain including an ink-supplying roll, a spring interposed between the press and the fountain for yieldingly maintaining the fountain and its roll in ink-supplying position relatively to the inking-roll when the throw-off mechanism is in on position, and means for actuating the fountain and its roll out of inlisupplying position relatively to said inking-roll simultaneously with the actuation of the throw-on mechanism to off position.

The combination with a printing-press the kind described, including its inkingroll, back-shaft, and throw-off mechanism, of an inlefountain pivotally mounted on the press, said fountain including an ink-supplying roll, spring for yieldingly maintaining the fountain and its roll in ink-supplyin position relatively to the inking-roll when the throivoif mechanism is in on position, a collar fixed on said shaft, said collar having a cam-portion, and a roller on the fountain normally engaging with said collar, the cam-portion of said collar being thrown into engagement with said roller to rock the fountain and its roll out of its said ink-supplying position w ion the throw- 7 off EHEChGDl-SIHJS actuated to off position.
The combination with a printing-press, of a plate mounted to r cl: upon the press, an ink-fountain on the forward end of said plate, spring interposed between the press and the forward end of the plate for yieldingly maintaining the plate and fountain in normal ink-supplying position, and means at the rear end of the plate engageable with the press for rocking the plate and fountain against the tension of said spring.

The combination with a printing-press, of a box-like receptacle for containing inl: mounted on the press, an ink-roller journaled on said receptacle, a plate 58 adapted to extend over, and provide a cover for, both said "eceptacle and roller, said plate being slotted, and attaching-members extending through the slots of the plate and into the eceptacle for fastening the plate in adjust ed positions upon the receptacle.
