Description

W.,S'. CUTTING..
BULLETr Arrucmon men um( 2a. 19u.-
Pa'nted Oct. 23, 1917.
(ik/tome? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM s. CUTTING, or TOWER, MrciiIsAN, AssIGNon or ONE-HALF To THOMAS s Fanano, orToWnn, MICHIGAN.
BULLET.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM S. CUTTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tower, in the county of Cheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bullets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bullets cr projectiles, the object in view being to produce an article of the character referred to em- -bodying in the construction thereof a main body which ischambered out to provide for the insertion of an explosive charge therein, which chamber is intersected by a number of ball or cartridge containing chambers which extend laterally outward through the peripheral or outer surface of the body of the projectile, the arrangement being such that when the charge of the explosive material in the main chamber is ignited, all of the bullets or minor projectiles are expelled at a high rate of speed in the vicinity where they will do the greatest injury.
The projectile also embodies a detachable nose portion having a threaded engagement with the main body of the projectile and containing a plunger, which upon contact with the mark or target at which the main projectile is directed, comes inA contact with a priming cap supported in a recess in the main body of the projectile,'resulting in the ignition and explosion of the main charge.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, vcombination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete projectile.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal diagrammatic section through the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof taken .in line with the ball containing bores.
The projectile comprises a main body 1 of cylindrical formation and a nose portion 2 which tapers toward the forward extremity thereof giving a true projectile shape to the complete article.
The main body 1 is centrally and longitudinally bored to form a main explosion chamber 3 adapted to receive a charge of powder. The bore 3 designed extends laterally through the body 1 but short of the butt end thereof. The opposite end of said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 23, 1917.
Application led May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,338.
vided and each of said bores is adapted tc i# contain a bullet 7 or other minor projectile.
The head 2 is formed with a central longitudinal bore 8 containing a plunger 9 having at its outer end a button-shI ped head 10.
The rear end of the head 2 is formed with an 1 annular rabbet 11 which provides a boss 12 externally threaded and screwed into the counterbore 4 of the main body 1. The boss 12 is counterbored and the inner extremity of the plunger is formed with a hole extending transversely therethrough in which is inserted a retaining pin or key 13, thus preventing-the escape and loss of the plunger.
14 designates a cap supporting plate inthe form of a disk which is inserted in the couniterbore 4 of the main body 1 and is supported by the annular shoulder 5 as shown in Fig. 2. A cap 15 is supported centrally by the plate or disk 14 and lies within the tubular boss 12 in position to be struck by the inner end of the plunger when the outer headed end thereof comes in contact with any object at which the projectile as a whole is directed.
It will, of course, be understood that the main body and nose portion of the projectile may be made of any suitable material, the same bein true of the minor projectiles or bullets. T e minor projectiles or bullets are not discharged until the main projectile is arranged at a point Where it will do the greatest damage. Then the minor projectiles are discharged with great force in the vicinity where they will do the greatest damage to the enemy.
I claim:
A projectile comprising a main body portion of cylindrical formation, a nose section having a detachable connection therewith, the main body being centrally and longitudinally bored to form a powder chamber and counterbored and formed with an internal annular shoulder, and said nose being i plate, a tubular boss on the' meeting face of the nose section externally threaded and screwed into the counterbored part of ythe main sect-ion, encircling said cap, and clamping said disk-like plate against said shoulder, a plunger movable longitudinally in the bore of the nose section and proj ectng at its inner end into said tubular boss, said end of the plunger and diametrically opposed sides of the boss being formed with registering 10 openings, and a retaining pin itted centrally and terminally in said openings, and yieldingly holding said plunger out of contact with thering cap.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature,
WILLIAM S'. CUTTING.
