ToaZZ whomiz'tmayconoem;f
Be it-known that I, LUTHER WOODEN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Lima, inthe county of Grantand State of s so lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese-Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to an improvement inshelves and the device is more particularly adapted for use in cheese factories wherever the laws of the locality require the cheese to be suspended in ,a position where rodents will be excluded from gaining access to'thecheese,
One of the objects ofthe invention is the provision of ;a-,plurality of shelves arranged in superposed relation and provided with hangers whereby the shelves may be suspended from the ceiling.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a plurality of shelves of metallic construction that will be substantially braced whereby a considerable weight may be placed upon the shelves while the same are in use.
As a further object of the invention the device is constructed to have-a number of shelves arranged in superposed relation and the hanger rods are arranged to receive an increased number of shelves if the same are desired.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a shelf which consists of com paratively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the invention applied to the ceiling. I
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the device is provided, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, with a plu-.

rality of superposed shelvesl, 2, 3 and-. Since all of-the-shelves are identical construction for the purpose of this descriptiOn-onlyone of the shelveswillbe described in. detail. Two longitudinally extending side bars 5 and 6 are constructed from lengths ofangle iron and are arranged ina positionwhereby their horizontal flanges? provide ledgesfor receiving the plate 8. The p-late, foreac'h shelf, is of large rectan gular formation and hasits longitudinal edges in, -alinement with the outside edge of each longitudinal sidebar .5 and 6. End bars .9 are arranged at .each end of each shelf and the ends of the flanges, 7 of each side bar 51and- 6 restupon the horizontahflangeof each end bar 9.. Theend bars are constructed from relatively short lengths of angle iron similar to the side bars 5 and 6. Extending transversely across each shelf and arranged in spaced relation are ithe reinforcing bars '10 also formed of lengths of angle iron similar to the-end bars .9. The ends of there inforcing bars 10 .arefastened to the @said bars 5 and 6 by the bolts 11 which extend through openings Elll'itb-B .plate, sidebars p. and the .ends of the reinforcing bars 10. These openings are in alinement wherebythe bolts 11 may be received for bolting the parts together as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Truss bars 12 and 13 are also constructed from lengths of angle iron and extend longitudinally between the side bars 5 and 6. Cut-out portions 14 are provided in each of the vertical flanges of each truss bar whereby the reinforcing bar 10 may contact with the bottom of the horizontal flange 15 of each truss bar.
Each corner of each shelf is provided with an opening 16. This opening extends through eachend of the horizontal flange in each side bar 5 and 6 and through the end of each horizontal flange in each end bar 9 and also through the corner of each plate 8. Suspension rods 17 are extended through the opening 16 and their lower ends are provided with nuts 18 thereby preventing the lowermost shelf from being disposed from the rods 17. Any number of shelves may be arranged upon the rod according to their length. In order that the shelves may be properly spaced apart each rod 17 is provided with a plurality of cylindrical sleeves 19 the lower ends of which are in contact with the upper surface of each plate 8 and their upper ends receive the corners a of the horizontal flanges of each end bar 9. Thus, four suspension rods are employed, one being disposed at each corner of each shelf. For preventing the shelf from buckling in the center when a weight is applied thereto, I provide the supplemental suspen sion rods 20 which are extended through openings in the center of each reinforcing rod 10 and are provided with cylindrical sleeves 21 similar in construction With the slots 18. v The upper end of each suspension rod is provided with a hook 22 adapted to be caught into an eye bolt 23 fastened to the ceiling A. The shelvesare thereby suspended in a position where it will be impossible for rodents to gain access to the cheese which will be placed upon the shelves. From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable shelf has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be'understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended. s
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a plurality of shelf units, each unit comprising side bars and end bars connected to the ends of the side bars, reinforcing bars connected to the end bars and armemes ing-bars connected to the end bars and arranged in the space between the side bars, a plate mounted upon the said bars, the ends of each of said bars having openings formed therein, suspension rods extended through the openings and supported at their upper ends, and sleeves carried by the suspension rods for holding the said units in superposed spaced relation, truss bars extended transversely across each shelf unit and provided'with an opening intermediateits ends, supplemental suspension rods extended through the openings for assisting said first mentioned suspension rods whereby the intermediate portion of each shelf unit will be prevented from buckling.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses LUTHER WV. WOODEN.
