WILLIAM H, ERIC/K, 0F PHlLADELP-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEAMER.
Application led July 19, 1916, Serial No. 110,149. Renewed August 23, 1917.
To all uf/wm i may concern.'
Be it known that l, WILLIAM l-l. Fnicir, citizen ot the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the ycounty ot Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useiul Improvements in Reamers, oit `which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machinists tools and re't'ers especially to d vices employed for truing and enlarging holes and commonly designated as reamers.
rlie object of the invention is to provide a reamer having rotatable cut-ting members which may be readily applied and removed for sharpening or repairs, uniformly and simultaneously adjusted relative to the axis of the device, and in which simple and eilicient means are furnished for adjusting the cutters and clamping the same in position when adjusted.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reamer embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2..
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing a modiied form of construction.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views showing modified forms of cutting members adapted for use with the devices shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the details ot the drawing as set out in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the reference numeral 25 designates the body of a bit holder, cylindrical in form, having a reduced Vportion or neel; 26 at the rear end, and furnished with a central bore 27 extending entirely through the holder. The body of the holder is reduced to form a iange or shoulder 28 adjacent to the neck end 26, and surrounding said body and resting at one end against said flange or shoulder is a retaining sleeve 29. This retaining sleeve 29 is provided in its periphery with an annular series of channels or grooves 30, cylindrical in form, and having their outer sides open to the periphery of the ring. These grooves 30 extend entirely through the ring from end to end thereof, and within said grooves Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (het. 16, 1917.
serial No. 187,889.
are located cylindrical cutting elements or bits .31, each having a suitable longitudinal groove or channel 32 upon one side, so formed as to leave a salient lip 33 which forms the vcutting edge of the bit.
The cutting elements 81, which are rothe holder and engages the adjacent end ot the sleeve. This nut 34 is provided with a flange 35 which overhangs the forward ends oi the cutters 3l and holds them trom outward longitudinal movement, and said collar is alsor provided. with sockets or recesses 36 whereby it may be engaged and adjusted by means of a Spanner or similar tool. Between the flange or abutment 28 and the adjacent end of the sleeve 29 and rear ends of the cutters 31 is interposed an adjusting collar or thimble 37 provided with elongated radial slots 3S engaged by decentered or eccentrically arranged pins 39 i'iXed in the rear ends of the cutters, whereby upon turning or'rotating the collar or thimble the cutters may be turned or rotated to simultaneously project their cutting edges to a greater or less degree, the elongated slots allowing for the movement of the collar and pins upon the cutters through arcs of dierent radii. The collar is provided with sockets 40 for the reception of a Spanner, whereby the cutters may be conveniently adjusted.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the cutters are normally clamped in adjusted position by the retaining nut 84, but that upon loosening said nut the adjusting collar or thimble may be turned to simultaneously rotate the cutters, and that after the cutters have been adjusted to a desired degree the said cutters and adjusting collar may again be clamped or locked ink adjusted position by tightening the nut 84. rllhe slots and pins provide cam or eccentric mechanism for adjusting the cutters, as will be readily understood.
The modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5 employs a body 25 and a sleeve 29 similar to those described in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the sleeve being retained by a collar 34 engaging the threads 41 on said body. An adjusting collar 42 is located between the sleeve 29 and the flange or shoulder 2S. rIhis collar'fhas a marginal annular rim or flange projecting from its upper or front face and within this rim are located a series ot pins which engage slots @l5 attached to or formed integral with the cutters 8l. The pins may be arranged to engage slots in the body portions of the cutters, suitable'slots ior this purpose being shown-in I 1 igs. G and 'T at il? and i8, respectively. rIhe slots in the foot bloclrsare arranged at an angle to the axis orp the device and coperate with the pins to provide cam or eccentric mechanism for adjusting the cutters.
I claim l. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, cutters rotatably mounted upon the holder and provided with grooves forming cutting edges, and cam mechanism independent of said grooves for simultaneously rotating and adjusting the cutting' elements.
2. In a. reamer7 the combination of a holder, a series ot' cutters rotatably adjustable upon the holder provided with grooves forming cutting et ges, a rotary adjusting element, and cam mechanism independent of said grooves and actuated by said element for adjusting the cutters.
3. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, cutters rotatably mounted upon the holder and provided with grooves forming cutting edges, a rotatable adjusting element, and connecting means between the cutters and rotatable adjust-ing element, comprising pin and slot connections independent of said grooves, for adjusting said cutters upon the rotation of said elements.
d. In a reamer, the combination of a holder, a series of cutters rotatably adjustable upon the holder and provided with grooves forming cutting edges, a rotatable adjusting element, and connecting means between the cutters and the rotatable adjusting element comprising cam slots and pins independent of said cutting edges; said connecting means serving upon the rotation of the adjusting element ilo-.rotatably adjust the cutters.
5. In a reamer, the combination Vot a holder, a series of rotatably7 adjustable cutting elements, eccentrically arranged pins upon said cuttingk elements, and a rotary adjusting member provided with means for engaging and actuating said pins.
6. In areamer, the combination of a holder, a series of rotatably adjusting cutting elements, eccentric pins upon the cutting elements, and a rotary adjusting device provided with slots to receive and engage said pins. y
7. In a reainer, the combination of a holder provided with peripheral seats, a series of cutting elements rotatably mounted in said seats, said cutting elements beingk pendent of said grooves and cutting edgesk i of the cutting elements between said adjusting member and the cutting elements forv rotatably adjusting the latter.
9. In a reamer, the combination of a holder provided" with peripheral seat grooves, cutters freely revoluble on their axes in 'said grooves and provided with grooves forming cutting edges, a rotary actuating member mounted on the holder in proximity to one end of the cutters, and cam connections between said actuating member and the adjacent ends of the cutters, wholly independent of the cutting edges of the cutters for simultaneously rotating said cutters on their axes.
l0. In a reamer, the combination of a holder provided ywith peripheral seat-s, cutters mounted inl said seats and freely. revoluble on their aXes therein,v a rotary actuating member upon the holder in proximity to one end oie the cutters, said member being provided with camslots and campins upon the adjacent ends oil the cutters movable in said slots, whereby the cutters may be simultaneously rotated by movements of the ring.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
