NEEDLE CAP PLATE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1.6, 1917.
Application filed March 30, 1916. Serial No. 87,792.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS Bor- TOMLEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparta, in the county of White, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle Cap Plates for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in needle cap plates for shoe sewing machines, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the needle plate can be easily and quickly removed and reversed for sewing leather harness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a needle cap plate for a shoe stitching or sewing machine, whereby the needle plate can be conveniently reversed for different uses and will have its upper surface in a plane with the upper surface of the cap so that the work will have a smooth bearing surface.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features, of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which.
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper part of a sewing machine, showing the needle cap plate.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the cap, which is of the conventional form, and has hingedly connected thereto a door 2, said door having its upper flange 3 curved as at 4, the purpose of which will appear later.
It has been the practice heretofore to do tachably connect the needle plate of the cap above the plane of the top thereof, but this is objectionable since it does not provide a smooth working surface, and it is to overcome this objection that the present inven* tion has been perfected. I
The cap 1 has its top provided with a slot 5, the side walls of which are provided with dove-tailed grooves 6 for slidably engaging the beveled edges 7 of the needle plate 8, said plate having its ends provided with needle engaging openings 9, one of which is used when the machine is in use when stitching shoes, while the other is adapted for use for sewing harness or other leather articles other than shoes.
Thus it will be seen that the plate 8 can be conveniently removed and reversed, and that when the door 2 is closed, the outer end of the plate will engage in the edge of the flange 3 of the door, thus preventing accidlental disengagement of the plate from the s 0t 5.
What is claimed is A needle cap plate for sewing machines comprising a rectangular member of substantially inverted U-shape, a door hinged to one end of the U-shaped member and forming a portion of the top thereof, and a needle plate provided with end perforations, and slidably mounted in a longitudinal slot in the U-shaped member and secured therein by said hinged door, said needle plate being capable of reversal in said slot.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN THOMAS BOTTOMLEE.
