Description

C. S. SHEPARD.
DETACHABLE PAIL COVER.

wig Cldrwv A TTOHNJZY enemas sxsnnrann or earmaeueirsg NEW-freak;
To all a hma'it may 6 0mm Be it known that'T, CHARLES S. SHEPARD,
afcitizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of the village of Catt arau gus,
countyof Cattaraugus, and State of New Yorlghave invented certa n new and-"useful Improvements 1n "Detachable Pa l=Covers,
of which thefollowing a full,clear,':andf
exact description. My nvent on relates "generally to pall covers,' and more particularly" to covers which maybe used formilk receptacles in A V I p v "tending and inwardly "tu'rnedlips 15"for engagementfwith the beaded rim6 "of the covers which partially envelop thetop of the pail, thus leaving 'a'pouring' opening. Such covers are not detachable, but 'are secured to the top of the pail, usually by means of solder. Inasmuch as such permanently secured covers cannot be detached from the pail each time the same is used, there are numerous pockets and crevices which cannot be, by any practical means, thoroughly cleansed. These pockets provide places for the lodgment of dirt and foreign substances, and thus make these pails very unsanitary.
The general object of my invention, therefore, has been to provide a cover for such pails which can be easily detached each time the pail is used, so that not only the pail, but the cover may readily be made sanitary.
Another object has been to provide a cover which shall be simple and cheap to manufacture and one which may be quickly and securely attached to the pail.
I have accomplished the above objects and advantages by the device shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pail with my cover attached and showing the cover in section.
Fig. 2 shows an enlarged bottom view of my cover. 1
Fig. 3 shows an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional elevation of the cover fastening means.

when attached-to the" pail the pouring opening 18 provided: This opening is bounded" by a circularrim 9-, which i's preferably? beaded'and r provi'ded'with' an ihelo'sed wireff f The outer'rlm' *10 of' the cover is preferably turnedover, as clearly shown- Fig; 3, tlius providinga stiff strong construction.
Arranged about "the *e'uter' 15mm 10 of the 14:. {These clips are secured to th 'e "upper cover are a plurality of",clips'-11, 12, 13*and" face of the cover and have 5 outwardly i pail. The clips '13 and 1 1 are'each arranged on opposite sides 6 er the op'ening 8 an'd'fnea'r' the edge 9 'so asto hold'the p'oints 16 and 17,
rims 9 and .10, securely in place. 7
The wire placed in thee-ageasurround ing the'openi'ng 8, is preferably of resilient material so that the points 16 and 17 will be drawn toward each other. An additional which-are formedht the "intersection'of the'-" points are spread in placing them over the beaded rim of the pail, the cover will be securely held in position by the resilience of the spring 18 and wire'in theedge 9.
When my cover is to be secured to the pail, the points 16 and 17 are raised as the center of the top of the cover is slightly pressed, thus increasing the distance between the corners, and when in this position the clips 11 and 12 are engaged with the rim of the pail and the points 16 and 17 brought down on top of the rim, and when released the clips 13 and 14 will be drawn inwardly and also engage with the beaded rim 6 of the pail, thus securely holding the cover in position. When it is desired to release the cover, it is pressed downwardly at the central, top
portion, which causes the points 16 and 17 to be spread, whereupon they are lifted from engagement with the rim, thereby releasing the cover.
Obviously, some modification of the cover herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of myinvention or the scope of the appended claims,
and I do not Wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. A resiliently-detachable pail cover so formed as to envelop a part of the top of a pail and leave a pouring opening therefor, means for engaging the rim of the said pail, and resilient means integral With said cover for contracting the rim of the cover.
2. A resiliently-detachable pail cover so formed as to envelop a part of the top of a pail and leave a pouring opening therefor, clips carried by the cover for engaging the beaded rim of the pail, and resilient means integral With said cover for contracting the rim of the cover.
3. A resiliently-detachable, crescent-shaped pail cover so formed to envelop a part of the top of a pail and leave a pouring 7 opening therefor, means for engaging the rim oi"? the pail, and a spring normally under tension and having its ends secured to the cover near the point of the crescent for drawing the points toward each other.
A. The combination With a pail, of a resiliently-detachable cover, said cover being so formed as to envelop the greater part of the top of said pail, the edge of said cover Which bounds the opening being beaded and provided With a resilient Wire, resilient means integral With said cover for contracting the rim of the cover, and means carried by said cover for engaging the rim of said pail.
5. The combination With a pail, of a resiliently-detachable, crescent-shaped cover,-
said cover being so formed as to envelop a part of the top of sa1d pail, the edge of said cover, Which bounds the opening, being In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
