My invention has for its obj ect -to provide an extremely simple and highly eiiicijent press especially adapted for use in; pressing and baling waste paper, but adapted,`never theless, vfor several `analogous-uses. daily use in public buildings, school houses, stores, flats, apartment houses, and the like, and even in privatedwellings. In the accompanying drawings which'` illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

The press comprises a strong, rectangularbox 1, preferably made of `wood andl provided with a displaceable' side 2. The displaceable side 2, as shown, is connected to the bottom of the boxby hinges 3 and is adapted to be rigidly locked to the box in a closed' position by suitable lock devices shown as in the formof hooks 4 pivoted to .the ends of the box and engageable with eyes or lugs 5 on the end edges of the said displaceableside. The presser plate thenbeing placed on top of the waste paper, a person vmay step thereon, and with his weight,com-

press the paper-at the bottom of the box, 'or if desired, a lever may be employed for this 'y purpose. At any rate, when the lock barsr 8 areturned outward, and the presser plate `is' forced downward, the said pawls will follow,y up their engagement with'the strips 9 and will hold the presser plate in the lowermost position in'which it'may be forced, so that the waste paper may be held under compres-l sion until it has set or lost most of its tendency toexpand. In fact, waste paperonce properly compressed, will expand but very little. When itis desired to remove the presser plate, thefhinged wings ofthe dogs 8 must be turned backward.
