JOHN ALFRED DAHLQVIST, OF NYI-IEM, I-IUIDDINGE, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO AKTIE- BOIIAGET SALENIUS WERKSTADER, OF SUNDBYIBERG, SWEDEN, A CORPORATION OF SWEDEN.
COUPLING DEVICE FOR SiEPARATOR-DRUMS.
Application filed November 25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J 01m ALFRED DAHL- ovis'r, a subject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Nyhem, Huddinge, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling Devices for Separator-Drums, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a coupling device in centrifugal liquid separators for the transmitting of the rotary motion of the shaft or spindle to the drum loosely slidden on the same. In coupling devices for the said purpose as hitherto constructed it is necessary to rotate the drum to a certain position with relation to the spindle, when being slidden on the same, in order to bring the coupling device into operation, or if there has been a play in the said respect, the said play has been very slight. This is a drawback, owing to the fact, that generally the rotary position of the drum, when being slidden on the spindle, is not suitable for bringing the coupling device into operation, in consequence whereof the coupling device is not brought into operation, until the drum has been rotated through a greater or smaller angle, with relation to the spindle, which rotary motion, if great, easily results in the failure of the coupling device to operate, so that the drum keeps turning around the spindle.
The object of this invention is to remove the said disadvantage. This is effected by those parts of the coupling members, which are adapted to engage each other during the first phase of the connecting operati0n,being as short as ossible peripherlcally, so that the drum will be connected with the spindle practically in any rotary position of the drum with relation to the spindle, when being slidden on the same. Besides an arrangement is provided for centering the drum with relation to the spindle.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation partly in section of one form of the invention;
Fig. 2 shows a section on line EF of Fig. 1; and
Fi s. 3 and 4 show cross-sections of modified forms of the driving pin.
The shaft spindle 1 is provided with a tapering end 2 received in the sleeve 6 on which the drum 5 is mounted.
The spindle 1 has passed therethrough a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1917.
Serial No. 802,953.
transverse pin 7 adapted to be received in the shouldered slot formed between the pointed teeth 11, the form of the slot being preferably such that its closed (or upper) part or end as wide as or wider than the open (or lower) inlet part, so that the projecting ends of the pin will not tend to leave the slot.
It is noted that the teeth 11 are pointed at their lower ends, and when the drum is placed on the spindle there is practically no chance that a pointed end will catch on the pin 7. Even if it should, however, it will immediately move oil" when there is the sli htest relative rotation between the drum and the spindle.
The pin 7 need not necessarily be cylindrical but may be provided with an edge at one side as shown on the pin 7 of Fig. 3 and on the pin 7 of Fig. a.
With all of the forms above indicated the drum may be placed on the spindle and brought into operative engagement therewith immediately or without being held out of operative engagement for more than a small fraction of relative rotation between the drum and spindle.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a centrifugal liquid separator, the combination of a spindle; a drum loosely carried thereon; and coupling members transmitting motion from the spindle to the drum and comprising a part having a substantially axial slot open at one end; and a member received in said slot, said slot flaring toward it open part, the open part of said slot terminating in a sharp edge.
2. In a centrifugal liquid separator, the combination of a spindle; a drum loosely carried thereon; and coupling members transmitting motion from the spindle to the drum and comprising a part having a pair of flaring, substantially axial slots open at the end; and a member received in said slots, said slots flaring toward their open ends and meeting each other in parts tapering to a distinct edge.
3. In a centrifugal separator, the combination of a spindle; a drum loosely carried thereon; and coupling members transmitting motion from the spindle to the drum, and comprising a part having a slot extending longitudinally of the axis of said part and having an open end having sides flaring from each other toward the open end, each thereon; and coupling members transmitting motion from the spindle to the drum, and comprising a part having a pair of slots extending longitudinally of the. axis of said 'part, each slot having an open end having sides flaring from each other toward the open end, the flaring sides of one slot meeting the flaring sides of the adjacent slots in distinct edges and forming projections tapering in the direction of the open ends of the slots, said slots loosely receiving the other member.
5. In centrifugal liquid separators, the combination of a spindle, adrum loosely slidden on the same, and coupling members transmitting the motion of the spindle to the drum, one of the coupling members being provided with a substantially axial slot, the end portion of which slot is open and increases in width outwardly and is, limited by portions of the coupling member taper ing toward one end of the axis of the member and forming a distinctedge, the said slot receiving loosely the other vcoupling member. I
6. In centrifugal liquid separators, the combination of a spindle, a drum loosely slidden on the same, and coupling members transmitting the motion of the spindle to the drum, one of the said coupling members carrying a projection and the other coupling member comprising a sleeve, located in the hub of the drum, said sleeve having a substantially axial slot, the end portion of which is open andinoreases in width outwardly and is limited by portions tapering toward one end of the axis of the member and forming a distinct edge, the said slot receiving loosely the said projection.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing, witnesses.
