UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID R. RAE AND THEODOBE F. LEWIS, OF PROVIDENCE, B. I.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS OR STUDS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,010, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID R. RAE, and THEoDoRE F. LEwIs, both of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons or Studs 5 and we do hereby declare that the following speciiication, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is a side View, real size. Fig. 2 is a top view, double size. Fig. 3 is a side view, double size. Fig. 4 is an end view, double size.
The object of our invention is to construct a button or stud which shall be less likely to get out of repair than others now in use, and, at the same time, capable of being quickly and more easily adjusted; and consists in the improvements hereinafter described. Our improvements relate to that class of studs which are adapted to and used in connection with eyelet-holes.
Y Ainthe drawing is the top of the button or stud, which is provided with and attached to an S-shaped shank, B.
The operation of our invention is as follows :v
Insert in the eyelet-hole the point c of the shank B, and pass the said shank through by moving the stud in the proper direction back and forthfirst one way and then the other-- until the shank shall thus have been entirely passed through, when the stud will be found to be securely Xed in the cloth, from which it must be removed by the wearer in a similar manner.
What we claiin as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, -is- A button or stud having an S-shaped fastening device, the bends of which are in the same vertical plane With the shank andl at right c ngles to the button-head.
