UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
. PETER R. HIGLEY, OF OSHAWA, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO G. E. HIGLEY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,898, dated February 20, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Be it known that I, PETER R. HIGLEY, of Oshawa, in the county and province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient bottle-stopper, which shall close automatically and hermetically. Itis more especially applicable to pop bottles, wherein the pressure is such as to force the valve again st the seat with power sufticient to secure a periectly-sealed joint when the parts are properly constructed. It consists, mainly, in providing the hinged cap of the stopper with one or more chambers arranged in relation to the valve in such a manner that when it is forced to its outward position the stopper shall be hermetically closed, and when it is in its inner position a full opening shall be provided around it for the purpose of filling the bottle.
Figure l is a vertical central section of my Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the wire hinge h. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clamping and binding'latch b. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the hinged cap 0 and valve g taken in theplane of the dotted line m, Fig. l.
The band A is attached to the neck of the bottle in the usual manner, and to this I pivot the clamping-latch I). The hinge h is either soldered to the band, or it may be riveted. It is formed of one piece of wire. The pivoting ears 6, which receive the pintles n of the cap are prevented from spreading by the connect ing-section c of the hinge wire. The ears are left a little open until after the pintles are inserted. The clamping-latch b may be made as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It draws the cap 0 down firmly upon the packing f, which may be made of rubber or other suitable material. The cap 0 is provided on one side with a projecting lug, u, from which project laterally the the pintles 6, shown in Fig. 4, and on the other side is the notched lug v, to receive the hook of the clamping-latch b. The cap is chambered out, as shown at i, in Figs. 1 and 4, to provide a sufficient opening around valve 9 when it is in its lower position as when filling the bottle. This valve is made hollow at the lower end,
as shown in Fig. 1,'and is provided with an anfull opening through the cap when the bottle is being filled, and yet secure a perfectly-sealed joint when the filler is removed and the valve is thrown out or up, as represented in Fig. l. The bottle is emptied by unhooking the latch b, when the cap 0 is thrown back.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The hinge h, for the cap 0 of bottle-stoppers, composed of the wire ears 6, connecting sectian and solid pintles a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the hinged cap 0, the clamping and binding latch I), all arranged to operate in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
3. The automatically -acting valve y, constructed substantially as herein shown and arranged, to be packed upon its periphery within the tapering cap 0 of bottle stoppers, as and for the purposes set forth.
