To all whom/it may concern." y
Be it known that 1, J HN H. Soortr, a citizen of the United States, residingf'at Winston-Salem, in' the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Pipe and CigaretteFilling Tobacco-Box, of which the followingis aspecification. t
The'objec'tof the inventionisto rovi e a simple and comparatively inexpensive cor 1 tainer for tobacco provided with means whereby through the manipulation of a single operating element the receptacle may be opened to permit the discharge of tobacco, while at the sametime the tobacco isfo'rcibl'y expelled or discharged into the pipe or into the cigarette paper so as to avoid the incon veniences incident to thetobacco being di? verted and wasted by'the wind, etc the release of the [operating element serving to permit the withdrawal of the discharging means and the closing of the discharge open ng. i y
' Further objects of the invention will appear asthe description proceeds, it being un derstood that the invention consists in a certain combination and relation of parts, changes in which may be made Within the terms of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention. V
In the drawingsillustrating a preferred embodiment ofthe invention,- t Figure 1 is a plan view of the receptacle I the receptacle and contained parts, on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The container or receptacle 10 may be of any convenient or preferred shape by which the carrying thereof in, the pocket may be facilitated, and preferably at one curved end thereof is located a discharge opening 11 surrounded by a suitable short nozzle or lip 12 which may be inserted into the mouth of a pipe during the filling operation, said discharge opening being normally closed by means of a shutter 13 extending at an angle from and supported by a carrying element 14 which in the illustratedembodiment of the invention consists pf a platemounted close to and parallel with the rear wa r side'of the casing and pivoted thereto as at 15. The shutter 13 is slidable along the curved end of the receptacle or casing across and away from 'the'discharge opening and is movable laterally to one side of said opening. Also mounted within the receptacle'adjacentto the rear wall or side thereof is a slide 16 having connection with the shutter carrying plate whereby when the slide is moved in one direction the shutter is moved to ex'pose the discharge opening, whereas a reverse movement of the slide serves topositively 'move the shutter to close said opening. i In the construction illustrated, the slide is provided with a pin 17 operating in a cam slot 18 in said shutter carrying plate, said cam, slot being shown in full lines in Fig.2 and in dotted lines inFig. 1, a spring 19 being connected therewith for returning said slide to its normal position after it has been advanced to open the discharge outlet of the receptacle. Preferably this spring is housedas shown at 20'to prevent the contents of the receptacle from interfering with the operation thereof, and connected with the spring is a'rod 21, through means of which connection is made between the spring and'the slide. Also carried by the slide is a,
'slide is advanced to remove the shutter from its normal position covering the discharge opening, said plunger is advanced toward and into the discharge opening to serve as a means for forcibly ejecting the contents of the receptacle and pack the same more or less in the pipe or other receiving article. The means illustrated for operating the slide and plunger from the exterior of the box, without removing the cover or lid 23, is a button 24 operating in a suitable slot 25 in the rear wall of the box. It will be understood that in order to fill the receptacle, the cover 23 may be removed, after which it should be replaced and thereafter the contents of the box may be dispensed, for the purpose of filling a pipe or charging a cigarette wrapper, simply by pressing on the button 24 to cause the displacement of the shutter and the advance of the plunger. The waste of the contents of the receptacle is therefore avoided inasmuch as the tobacco is discharged exactly atthe point desired, Where ,tobacco receptaclehaving a curved end provided with a discharge opening, an
oscillatory plate pivoted to one side of the receptacle and having a shutter extending at "anangletherefrom and slidable along said end of the, receptacleacross and away from said opening, anda tobacco ejecting'plunger movable within the receptacle to andfifrom said opening. a
2. A, tobacco receptacle having U a dis chargefopening, a closure for said opening movable laterally to one side thereofland plunger within the receptacle movable toward and away from said opening andoperatively connected with the closure, so that when the plunger is moved toward the opening to push chargevof tobacco from the receptacle therethrough, the closure is removed fromsaid opening.
3. A tobacco receptacle having, a discharge openingya closure .forv said opening movable laterally to one side thereof, a
plunger within the receptacle: movableator ward and away from said opening, an, opera .tive connection between theplunger and 010-.
sure whereby the closure is openedand closed, when the plunger is .moved toward and away from the discharge opening, respectlvely, and spring means for returning theclosure to closed position and for moving the plunger away from the discharge Y opening, I
4. A tobacco; receptacle having a; ,curved' '1,2s7,ss1 I end providedwith a'discharge opening, an oscillatory plate pivoted to one side of the receptacle and having. a shutter extending at an angle therefrom and slidable along said end of the receptacle across and away from said opening, a slide movable along said sideof the receptacle, a plunger carried by theslide movable toward and away from said opening,'and an operative connection between said plate and slide for oscillating the plate when the slide is moved, so that the shutter; ismoved to open and closed posi tion when the plunger is moved toward and away from the opening, respectively; v
5. "A1 tobacco receptaclehaving a. curved endprovided with a discharge'opening, an oscillatory plate pivoted to one side of the receptacle andhaving a shutter extending atan angle therefrom and slidable along v said endof the receptacle across and away from said opening, a slide movable along said side of the receptacle, a plunger carried by the slide movable toward and away from said openlng, an operative connection between said; plate and slide. for oscillating the plate when the slide is moved, so that the shutter is movedto open and clo'sedposition when the plunger is moved toward and away from,- the opening, respectively, and a spring for returning the closure to closed position and formoving the slide and plunger away from said opening. vIn testimony that I claim the foregoing' as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses;
