Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented A110. 21, 1917.
Application filed August 1G, 1916. Serial No. 115,175.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARD No'rTEBoI-IM, a citizen of Germany, residing at Manila, in the Province of Manila, Philippine Islands, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Tiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roofing tiles and is especially designed to form such an interlock of the tiles when laid, as to prevent leakage between the tiles, which may occur during violent storms of wind and rain.
It consists of transverse rims so arranged as to prevent the water from being forced under the tiles, and insures its passing through the extreme end. It also comprises longitudinally disposed grooves forming double interlocking channels of such depth as to prevent the water from over-running these channelstransversely, while the channels themselves will form a method of egress for such water as may possibly be forced into them.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tile.
Fig. 2 is a top view.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 of'Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the roof in line 5 5 of Fig. 4. l
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a flat tile frag ment.
Thevobject of my invention is to provide an interlocking tile of such a character that the tiles will be held in proper relative position when laid andthe grooves or channels are so placed with relation to the water conducting channel that they will prevent any leakage caused by the most violent storms. As shown in the drawings, A is a tile made in an S-form, one edge of which is upturned and the other edge is correspondingly turned downwardly. The upturned edgeof the tile has grooves or channels 2a, extending lengthwise of the tile and the opposite or lower edge is formed with corresponding tongues 3,
which are adapted tolit into the grooves or channels of the next succeeding tile, when laid. These tiles may be made of any suitable material. They may be made of iron, or burnt clay, or'cement and sand, or other material.
Transversely across the head of each tile is a raised rib 4, which unites with the longi tudinal rib 5 forming the extreme upper longitudinal edge of the tile, and the side of the channel 2; 6 is a second raised transverse rib, which unites with the inner longitudinal rib 7, which forms the inner side of the groove or channel 2a. Transversely across the upper end of the lower surface of each tile is a lug 11 which may engage and form a stop against a purlin, and transversely across the bottom of each tile near the lower end, are lugs 12 and 13, with a' groove between which, when the tile is laid, will engage and interlock with the legs 4 and 6 at the top.
The lower curve of the S-shaped tile is flattened as shown at 8 and rests upon a supporting purlin 9, and 10 is a lug contiguous to the purlin, having a hole made in it, through which a wire may pass and be twisted around the purlin to prevent the tiles being lifted in case of a furious storm. Tiles formed in this manner will lie so closely and be so inter-locked, that itwill be impossible for storms of wind and rain to penetrate the joints between the tiles and a very lasting, durable roof covering is thus provided.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- An Sshaped tile having an interlocking upturned edge, said interlock consisting of a rib extending lengthwise on the edge adjacent the outer surface of the tile and above the level of the water conducting channel, a second and higher rib disposed inwardly and separated from the first rib by a groove, and a third rib disposed inwardly from and above the second rib and separated from the latter'by a second groove arranged above the first groove, and an interlocking downturned edge having ribs and grooves to interlock with the grooves and ribs respectively of an upturned edge of an adjacent block, said downturned edge having a flat ernten.
face seating on the first; shoulder above. the my hand in the presence of subscribing Witbottoln of the Water conducting channel nesses.
whereby the outer surfaces of adjacent tiles Y v EDUARD NOTTEBOHM. will lie flush with each other to unnterrupt Vtnesses: 5 the continuous curved outlines of contiguous VALTHER MOX,
tiles. i EMIL MEYER, In testimonywhereof I have hereunto set MIGUEL HENRY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents'e'ach, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, v Washington, D. C.
