PROTECTING DEVICE FOR TOILET-SEATS.

` To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE K. PALMER a subject of King George of Great Britain, residing at Miami, inthe Icounty of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protecting Devices,

for Toilet-Seats, of which the following .is a specification.

This invention relates to a protecting device to be used in. connection with toilet seats.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the toilet is provided with a seat'having connected therewith strips of material to serve as a shield, with the seat so constructed as to facilitate the passing of the strips over the seat when the occasion requires by mechanism for this purpose carriedby a plate arranged in the rear of the seat and also serving as a support for spools upon which the used portions of the strips may be wound.

Another object of the invention is to provide the device with winding mechanism for said strips which may be arranged within convenient reach of the person occupying the seat and is so constructed as to ypermit the strips to be quickly andjeasily moved over the seat when desired.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and 'particularly pointed out in theclaims. f

The preferred embodimentA of 'the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the same applied to the seat of a toilet and connected with a support.

vReferring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a toilet hopper of the type now in common use and having connected therewith, the pipe of the flush tank .(not shown in the drawings), said hopper being arranged adjacent a wall 2 .with which is connected a plate supporting rolls of protective material and winding mechanism.

The hopper 1 is provided with a seat 3 having spaced seat sections 4; and 5, the opposite `sides of lwhich are recessed to provide an opening 6 and have connected therewith to extend beyond the seat sections ears 6C f A yoke 7 forming a part oft-he seat 3 is4 interposed therebetween and the rim of the hopper, with the arms 8 of the yoke secured to the respective seat sections and connected sections 4 and 5 and held in spaced relation by the ears 9 of the cross bar of the yoke, said rollers 12 being in alinement with rollers 16 at the opposite ends of the seat sections and mounted to turn in the ears 6 on the yoke and seat sections.

The arms of the yoke have formed thereon lugs with which are connected buffers 16, which when the seat 3 is in lowered position contact with the rim of the hopper and space the arms of the yoke therefrom.

A plate 18 is secured to the wall 2 in the 100 rear of the hopper 1 and is provided between its ends with spaced arms 19 below which are arranged spaced arms 20 of less length than the arms 19. A shaft 21 is mounted in ears 23 on the plate 18 below the 105 arms 19, said shaft being provided at each end with a sprocket wheel 24.

A. second shaft 25 is mounted in bearings 26 on the plate 18 above the arms 19 and has fixed to one end thereofa sprocket wheel 110 by the cross bar 9 of the yoke which is ar- 27 and at its other end a ratchet Wheel 28 sprocket wheel 27 with one of the sprocket wheels 24 on the shaft 21.

Mounted to turn in the arms 19 is a shaft 33 provided with winding spools 34, said shaft being provided with a sprocket Wheel 35 connected with the other sprocket Wheel' 24 on the shaft 2l by means of a sprocket chain 36. The sprocket wheels 35 and 24 being relatively small in comparison to the sprocket wheel 27 so that, when the lever 30 is moved upwardly and the shaft 25 rotated by means of the dog 29 the shaft 33 is rapidly rotated.

A shaft 37 is removably mounted on the arms 20 and is provided with disks 38 for contact with the ends of rolls 39 of protective material, said material consisting preferably of strips of waxed paper and having ends initially carried upwardly and over the rollers 16 at the rear end of the seat sections, thence over the rollers at the forward ends of the seat sections and beneath said seat sections and over the rollers l2 and connected therewith the winding spools 34.

With the strips of protective material arranged as above described, it will be seen that when the said strips have been used as a shield, upward movement upon the lever 30 will cause the shaft 33 to be rotated through its connection with the shaft 25 by means of the sprocket chains 3l and 36 thus rotating the winding spools 34 and causing the used portion of the strips of protective material to be carried beneath the seat 3 as the strips are unwound from the rolls on the shaft 37. r

It will be noted with reference to the drawings,` that the ears 9 and l0 on the bar 9 of the yoke serve as guides for the strips, so that the same are evenly wound upon the winding spools 34E when unwound from the rolls on the shaft 37.
