HIGH-PRESSURE-GAS REGULATOR.

Be it known that I, GEORG WV. SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful mproved High-Pressure- Gas Regulator, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to gas regulators and has more particular relation to that class of regulators used in connection with gas delivered under high pressure as in outlying or suburban districts.
The principal ob] ect of the present inventionis to provide a high pressure gas regulator in which the low pressure side thereof is so arranged and constructed that the disk-valve for controlling the gas intake port may be adjusted or removed for repair purposes without disturbing the fulcrumed arm which operatively connects the same with regulator diaphragm and without disconnecting gas pipe connections of the supply system. A further object of the present invention is to provide the high pressure side of either the above improved type of gas regulator or the ordinary type of gas regulator with a gas intake chamber equipped with a removable screen for gas cleaning purposes so disposed that the said screen may be readily removed and replaced Without disturbing t-he gas supply connection.
Other and further objects of the present invention reside in the providing of general details of construction and arrangement and combination of parts as will hereinafter more fully appear.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features andV scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which:

In the drawings there is disclosed a physical embodiment of the invention, the same being designed in a manner best known to me at this time for practising the principles of the invention. Obviously, details of construction and general arrangement and combination of parts may be varied without departing from the fair spirit and scope of the appended claims. Referring now to the specific form illustrated in the drawings, particularly Figs. 1 to 4, 10, designates the body of a gas regulator which may be of any desired form and which is provided with the usual leather diaphragm 11. Such a regulator body is usually manufactured in separable sections -as shown. Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, there is formed integral with the base of the lower section and upon the high pressure side thereof an elongated gas intake chamber 12, preferably of circular cross-section provided at its closed end with a gas intake connection 13, and at its opposite or open end with a removable screw plug 14. Within this gas chamber and extended around three walls thereof and formed integral therewith is a grooved projection or ledge 15, to removably receive an elongated, horizontally disposed gas screening device 16, the operation of which will presently appear. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the gas intake chamber eX- tends somewhat beyond one side wall of the lower section. Surmounting the extended end of the gas intake chamber and formed integral therewith, as well as with the lower section of the regulator body, is a low pressure gas receiving` chamber 17, communication between which chamber and the high pressure gas intake chamber is established by means of a contracted vertically disposed A valve seat having a sharp peripheral edge 18, surrounds said port upon the low pressure side of the regulator. The chamber, 17, is tapped at its top to accommodate a removable, hollow screw plug 19, or similar closure and upon opposite sides is provided with gas delivery ports 20, and 21, from which piped connections are led to the gas system. As clearly shown, the opening in the top of the chamber'l?, is above and is concentric with the valve seat above mentioned.
A description will now be given of the means utilizedl for opening and closing the port 17a. Loosely fitted within the screw plug 19, is an elongated spider 22, see Fig.
t, forming a guide piece horizontally notched or slotted adjacent its top as at 23, and internally threaded to accommodate a vertically disposed valve stem 24, equipped at its top with a screw head 25, and at its bottom with a spherical portion 26. The spherical portion in turn is fitted to and carries in swiveled relation, a holder provided upon its under side with disks of a pliable nature, which holder constitutes a disk valve 27, for closing the port 17a. A disk-valve of this constructionmin connection with the sharp peripheral edge of the valve of the port 17a, constitutes efficient means for providing a gas tight joint, in that the valve may readily adapt itself to any irregularities of the valve seat by reason of its swiveled relation. By reason of said sharp peripheral edge, particles of foreign matter cannot lodge thereon which is a further advantage, for obvious reasons. The spider 22, carrying the disk-valve has connection with a horizontal arm 28, fulcrumed as at 29, and operatively connected as at 30, with the diaphragm 11, of the gas 'regulator'. As shown the free end of this arm 28, is forked and fitted between the apertured tines 31, of which and the slot or notch 23, of the spider is an inverted V-shaped removable member 32, preferably of heavy wire or equivalent material, see Fig. t. Thus movement of the arm 28, moves the disk-valve toward or away from its seat. In this connection it may be observed that the bottom low pressure gas chamber as shown to limit the upward movement of the outer end of the arm 28. Regarding the fulcrumed point of arm 28, it may be stated that the same is midway between and in register with the outlet openings 2O and 21, so that access thereto may be conveniently had when desired for repair purposes. To gain access to the disk-valve and its complemental parts however, it is merely necessary to remove screw plug 19, without disturbing in any manner the gas outlet connections or displacing the fulcrumed arm which in high pressure gas systems is most desirable. Thus repairs or adjustments of the disk-valve may be easily and safely made.
In operation, gas passes to chamber 12, through intake 13, and being under high pressure impinges first against that portion of gas screening device 16, immediately above the intake opening and deposits thereon as it passes therethrough any foreign substances as dust and grit, contained in the gas. In practice the foreign substances to a great extent fall back into the space beneath the screening device after impinging thereagainst in contradistinction to being forced through the same by the How of gas. As the mesh of the screen above the intake opening gradually clogs with the substancesy thus screened from the gas, the incoming gas moves along the chamber beneath the screen until open mesh is encountered, and so on until the entire screen is clogged whereon by removing plug 14, the screen may be readily removed and cleaned or replaced by another in a few moments time without disturbing the gas connections. Also the bottom of chamber 12 may be cleaned of deposit. From the gas chamber 12, gas enters chamber 17, through the contracted opening or port 17a, as governed by the operation of the regulator diaphragm 11, in the usual manner.
Referring now to Figs. 5, and 6, a cletachable form of gas intake chamber having a gas screening device therein, is disclosed. This type of device is calculated for use in connection with gas regulators now in general use. AsV shown in Fig. 5, such gas regulator is provided with a gas intake connection a, and a gas outlet connection Z), disposed thereabove. I-Iaving screw-threaded relation with the inlet connection a, so as to be detachable therewith is an elongated cylindrical casting 38, one end of which is provided with a vertical gas intake 34, and the opposite end of which is provided with a vertical gas outlet 35, anda removable plug 3G, horizontally disposed. A screen 37, is fitted within such casting in the same manner and may be removed therefrom in the same manner as the screen 16, hereinbefore described. It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Vhat I claim is: Y
1. A device of the class described embracing a gas regulator and its complemental valved port located upon its low pressure side and a compartment having a gas intake located upon its high pressure side the bottom of which compartment forms a deposit collecting space, said compartment being equipped above said space with a removable gas screening device disposed in a plane transverse to the passage of gas through' said intake.
2. A device ofthe class described embracing a gas regulator and its complemental valved port located upon its low pressure side and an elongated compartment constituting a gas intake chamber located upon its high'pressure side equipped with a substantially horizontally disposed removable gas screening device, one end of said chamber having a gas inlet located below7 said screening device and the other end of said chamber having` a gas outlet above said screening device 3. A device of the class described embracing a gas regulator and its complemental valved port located upon its low pressure side, an elongated compartment providedat one end with a relatively large gas intake and at its other end with a contracted gas outlet located upon the high pressure side of the regulator, a removable screen extended substantially throughout the entire length of said compartment in a horizontal plane substantially midway between said gas intake and outlet, means for supporting the screen within said compartment and a removable closure cap for said compartment to permit of the withdrawal of said screening device.
4.. A device of the class described embracing' a gas regulator and its complemental valved port located upon its low pressure side and a tubular compartment open at one end and constituting a gas intake chamber located upon its high pressure side, said compartment being internally provided with a groovcd guide piece, a removable gas screening device iitted to said guide piece, and a removable closure for the open end of said compartment, said compartment having a gas intake connection at its closed end and below the screening device and a gas outlet 'at its open end and above said screenin g device.
5. A device of the class described embracing a gas regulator proper provided upon its low pressure side with an auxiliary compartment having a contracted inlet port and a relatively large outlet, the top of said compartment having an opening` therein above said port, a hollow closure removably fitted to said opening and means operative within said compartment and connected with the regulator proper for controlling the inlet port, at least a part of said means being movable within said closure.
6. A device of the class described embracing a gas regulator including its diaphragm provided upon its low pressure side with an auxiliary compartment having a contracted inlet port and a relatively large outlet, the top of said compartment having an opening therein above said port, a removable and hollow closure for said opening, a guide piece movable part way through said closure, a valve and its stem carried by said guide piece and means operatively connecting said guide piece with the regulator diaphragm. 7. ln combination a gas regulator and its complcmental diaphragm of a compartment upon its high pressure side equipped with a gas intake and provided vwith a screen disposed in a plane transverse to the passage of gas through said intake, an auxiliary compartment having a gas inlet and an open top upon its low pressure side, a contracted port establishing communication between said compartments, a removable hollow closure for said open top, a valve for closing said contracted port the stem of which valve is guided in said hollow closure and means operative between said valve and diaphragm for controlling said valve.
8. In combination a gas regulator including its complemental diaphragm of an auxiliary compartment located upon its low1 pressure side having a contracted inlet port and a relatively large outlet the top of said compartment having a relatively large opening therein disposed above and concentric with said gas inlet, a hollow closure cap removable with respect to said opening, and means vertically operative within said compartment and closure and connected with the said diaphragm by means of a fulcrumed arm for controlling said inlet, which parts are so disposed that the said valve and means may be removed through said opening upon removal of the cap without displacing said ulcrumed arm or disturbing gas pipe connections.

A device of the class described embracing a gas regulator including its complemental diaphragm, having upon its low pressure side an auxiliary compartment having a contracted inlet port and a relatively large gas outlet, said compartment in its top having a relatively large opening disposed above and concentric with said iniet port, a removable and hollow closure cap for said opening, a spider having a horizontally slotted wall and forming a guide piece movablevertically within said cap, a valve and its stem fixed to said spider, a horizontal and fulcrumed arm connected at one end to said diaphragm and an inverted V-shaped member connecting the free end of said arm and the slotted portion of said spider.

A device of the character stated embracing a gas regulator the low pressure side of which is provided with a valved port and the high pressure side of which is provided with a compartment equipped with a gas intake and having a gas screening device within the compartment disposed in a plane transverse to the upward passage of the gas through said intake that part of the compartment below the screening device constituting a deposit chamber.
11. A device of the character stated embracing a gas regulator, the low pressure side of which is provided with a valved port and the high pressure side of which is provided with a compartment equipped with a gas intake and having a gas screening device within the compartment disposed in a plane transverse to the upward passage of the gas through said intake and said port that part of the compartment below the screening device constituting a deposit chamber.

A device of the character stated embracing a gas regulator, the low pressure side of which is provided with a valved port and the high pressure side of which is provided with a compartment equipped with a gas intake and having a gas screening device within the compartment disposed in a plane transverse to the passage ofr the gas through said intake and said port, the ends of the screening device being in alinement with said intake and port, respectively.

A device of the character stated embracing a gas regulator, the low pressure side of which is provided with a valved port and the high pressure side of which is pro4 vided with. a compartment provided with a gas intake and further provided with a gas outlet having communication with said port, said compartment having therein an elongated screen disposed in a plane transverse to the passage of the gas through said intake and so arranged that an unobstructed gas passage is present upon opposite sides of the screen throughout its extent.
14C. A fluid pressure regulator einbracing a casing having intake and outlet connections, said casing being provided with an opening in vertical alinement with the gas intake, a hollow closure removably applied to said opening, a diaphragm and gas feed cont-rol, means for said intake operatively connected with said diaphragm, at least a part of said means being freely guided vertically within said hollow closure.

As a new article of manufacture, a device of the character stated embracing a detachable casing having a gas intake and a gas outlet, saidv casing having mounted therein a gas screening device disposed in a plane transverse to theupward passage of gas through said intake, that part of the casing below the screening device constituting a deposit chamber.

As a new article of manufacture, a device ofy the character stated embracing a detachable casing provided with a gas intake and a gas outlet, said casing having removably mounted therein a gas screening device disposed in a plane transverse to the upward passage of gas through said intake that part of the casing below the screening device constituting a deposit chamber.
17. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the character stated embracing a detachable casing provided with a gas intake and a gas outlet, said casing having removably fitted therein an elongated screen disposed in a plane transverse to the passage of gas through said intake, said screen being so disposed that an unobstructed gas passage is present upon opposite sides of the screen throughout its extent.
18. A fluid pressure regulator embracing a casing provided with a vertically disposed gas intake port and laterally disposed gas delivery ports, a diaphragm, a fulcrumed lever connected therewith, a gas intake control and means operatively connecting said lever with said intake control, that portion of the lever adjacent the fulcrum point being in register with the said laterally disposed delivery ports.
