FIRELESS FURNACE.
Application filed January 23, 1917.
Be it known that l, ARTHUR PRICE, a subject of the ising of Great Britain, residing at Auburndale, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Fireless Furnaces, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates in a. general way to the methods of generating steam; and particularly to the use of inflammable gases for such purposes, with special reference to the conservation of heat by means of radiators initially7 heated by said gas, Vand such heat greatly conserved and more fully utilized than'by any previously known devices.
My objects are; first, to replace the use of coal by the use of an inflammable gas; seciond, to provide a series of radiators so constructed as to be adapted to be heated by a properly formed gas torch; third, to provide a gas torch suitable for the purposes of heating these radiators; fourth, tosurround the radiators by a double casing, one Within the other, the space between the two to be filled with mineral wool or other similar material which is a nonconductor of heat; fifth, to close all the flues of the boiler permanently except a single row farthermost from the front, and to arrange these with covers that may be opened during the period of initial heating.
I accomplish the results sought by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a rectangular boiler fitted with my device, which is shown partly in section.

Fig. 4c is an isometric view of one of the radiators; and
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of the gas torch for use with said radiators.

In the drawings A, is a cast iron boiler of the usual construction, having vertical flues or spaces a, for the escape of the products of combustion when coal is used for fuel.
The ordinary coal burning frebox has been removed and my device substituted therefor. This device consists of a double box-like form, the inner box B, surrounded by the outer box C, inclosing the rear, both Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner box B, is divided into any number of compartments, (in this case four,) by the longitudinal partitions Z), .7), o, forming separate spaces for the radiators E, E. In each of these compartments is placed a platform F, supported upon four or more short levers 7, f, fixed to the shafts G, G, and operated by the hand levers g, g, outside of the outer box C, and by means of which the platforms may be raised or lowered. Pivoted in the vertical sides of the platform F, is a series of friction rollers H, H, adapted to facilitate the introduction and withdrawal of the radiators E, E.

Y the radiators E, E, each consisting of a rectangular mass of metal, (preferably cast iron), having near the base a cylindrical hole e, for the introduction of the gas torch J, and the space beneath said hole cut away as shown. Radiating from the cylindrical hole e, are numerous lines of holes terminating at the top and sides.
The gas torch J, is a metallic pipe covered with cement composed of non-conducting material and fitted with a multiplicity of Ajets arranged in longitudinal lines substantially coinciding with the line of holes in the radiators E, E. The gas torch J, is connected by a flexible tube with any convenient source of gas supply.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that each compartment is closed by two doors, an inner' door K, and an outer' door L, each hinged and very tightly fitting. The inner door is connected by a horizontal rod 7c, with the right angle lever M, (Fig. 2) from which the vertical rod m, connects with the door N, closing the top of the flue or air space beneathit.
The operation of my device is as follows; The doors K, and L, being open, (and the vent door N, also open,) the radiators E, E, are put in place, resting upon the rollers H, H, the platform F, being at its lower position, as shown in Fig. 2. The gas torch J, is introduced into the radiator and ig` nited, the products of combustion passing up through the rear iiues a, and out past the door N. This action is continued until the radiator is as hot as desired. as my device can be adapted to a cylindrical boiler whether horizontal or upright, or

It is also tobe understood that as my obvject is lto conserve and prevent the loss of heat, other methods, such as producing a vacuum in the space between the inner and outer Vwalls of my heating space may be adopted. However I have shown what I y consider the preferable method.
Having described the construction and operation of my device, I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of radiators,platforms provided with rollers supporting said radiators, a steam boiler adapted to be heated by saidradiators, and means for loweringsaid radiators to a position for heating and raising them into near contact with said boiler to be heated.
