In assembling these parts of the machine, the shaft 6 which is in. the form of a rather long bolt is extended through the opening in the cutter 2 and Athrough 4that in the head 5, a bearing collar 14; having' first been interposed between saidheadand the face 7, of the cutter. The inner edge is also preferably concentricto 'the outer, and one end .edge 19 is in the plane of a radial line extric to the inner and outer edges, while the .to form a surface against which the skin may rest while being drawn across the edge of the cutter, thus forming a guide to aid the operator in removing the desired amount of surplus material from the flesh side of the skins or furs. The parings thus removed fall between the dished face 7 of the cutter and the guard 18 and drop past the lower portion of the cutter onto the support 1 or in any suitable receptacle which may be placed thereon. It will be seen from the above mentioned figure that the adjacent faces of the cutter and guard are inclined away from each other so that there is no possibility of the surplus material removed from the skins accumulating therebetween as in the old style fleshing machine. ln other words, the under side of the guard 18 is inclined in the same direction as its outer surface and the *adjacent edges of the cutter and guard come together to effectively cooperate in removal of the material from the skins.
It is obvious that by moving the outer edge of the guard inwardlyr or outwardly with respect to the cutting edge of the cutter, a greater or lesser amount of materials may be removed, all of the parings, as above mentioned, passing between this edge of the guard and the adjacent face cf the cutter. This guard is adjusted by an improved construction forming part of my invention. rillhe same consists broadly of an arm carried by the guard and rotatably and slidably disposed in a socket formed in one arm of a substantially right angular `bracket, the other arm of the latter being adjustably secured to the head 5 by means of the shaft 6 and its nut 17.
Specifically this part of the invention consists of va number of separable members all of which are adjustably connected together. The under surface ofthe guard midway between its ends is provided with a boss 21 in which a socket is formed to receive a pin 22, the same being 1ncld therein by a set screw 23. rThe free end of this pin is slidably and rotatably disposed in a bearing sleeve. 24, the same also having a set screw for securing the pin therein. From the bearing sleeve extends a pin slidably and rotatably mounted in a bearing opening 26 formed in one end of a longitudinally Aslotted plate 27, the slot of which is adapted to receive the shaft 6. A set screw 28 retains the pin in the opening 2G, the bearing sleeve 24 with its pin 25 and the slotted plate 27 forming in effect the right angular bracket above mentioned. lt is obvious that inasmuch as all of these separate elements may be adjusted with respect to each other, the guard may be moved in any direction relative to the outer face 7 of the cutter. For instance, by adjusting either the pin 22 in its sleeve 24 or the plate 2.7 the edge of the guard may be moved toward or away from the center of the cutter. Also by moving the pin 25 in its bearing opening, the space between the face 7 of the cutter and the adjacent edge of the guard may be varied. Furthermore the guard and all of`-` the parts whi... hold it to the machine may be rotated around the shaft G. NVith this great range'of adjustment any kind of skins or furs may be properly fleshed or pared on this machine.
Because of the fact that the cutter must have its annular edge very sharp in order to properly operate on the furs, provision is made for mounting a grinding mechanism upon the support, the same not being secured thereto during fleshing operations.l This grinding machine may be of any preferred construction such as that shown in Fig. 1i
where it will be noted that a sharpening stone 30 is disposed horizontally upon a vortical shaft operated by suitable gears driven by the crank 31. The support for these parts has an attaching foot 32 by which it may be quickly attached to the support 1 by the bolt and nut 33. Both faces of the cutter may be ground by the stone 30 by shifting the mechanism to either side of said cutter.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is obvious that a very simply constructed fleshing machine has been provided with a universally adjustable guard, and that the same will be much more efficient that any similar device now in use. Furthermore with slight modifications the guard may be used on fleshing machines already in operation.
I claim- 1. rlhe combination with a fleshing machine having a fleshing knife of a guard plate secured to said machine adjacent said knife, and means for adjusting said guard plate in any direction relative to the knife.
2. The combination with a fleshing machine having a fleshing knife of a guard plate disposed adjacent said knife, an arm extending from said plate and a bracket carried by the machine, said arm being slidably and rotatably supported in said bracket, whereby to hold said plate in adjusted positions with respect to the' knife.
3. The combination with a fleshing machine having a fleshing knife of a -guard plate disposed adjacent the said knife, a pin extending from said plate, and a bracket carried by the machine and including a right angular member having one arm secured to the machine, the other arm being provided with a bearing to slidably and rotatably receive said pin, whereby to hold said plate in adjusted positions with lrespect to the knife.
