EDGAR r. WILsoN, or Los ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
CUTTER.
Application led August 1,1916.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDGAR P. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutters, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates primarily to a cutter for use by sign and show card writers, photographers, leather workers and the like, for cutting and decorating purposes, for trimming drawings, photographs and the like and comprises a blade holder adapted to be held in the hand of the user while being used, in which holder any of the well known styles of safety razor blades may be positioned and securely retained therein and at the same time easily and quicklyinserted or removed therefrom when desired, together with a guard adapted to be detachably connected to said holder to inclose the exposed portion of the cutting edge of the blade when the blade is not being used or while being carried in the pocket of the user and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which will be cheap and simple in construction and operation.
A further object is to provide a cutter holder in which the cutters may be easily and quickly inserted therein or removed therefrom when desired.
Another object is to provide a cutter holder which may be adapted to t different sized blades.
A still further object is to provide means whereby the cutting edge of the blade will be inclosed when not in use thereby preventing injury thereto or to the user while being transported from place to place.
Further uses and objects will appear hereinafter and while I have shown and described my preferred form of cutter holder it will be understood that I do not limit myself to such construction but various changes may be made in construction and operation without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I accomplish the above objects by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device with a'blade protector in position.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of my device ready for use with the blade protector removed.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31, 1917.
serial No. 112,527.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical 4cross-section of my device showing another form of blade in position.
Fig. 6 is a protector.
Fig. 7 shows the blank ready for formperspective view of a blade .ing in my blade holder.
Referring to the drawings my blade holder comprises a formed blank 10 of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is bent centrally and longitudinally to form a cylindrical body portion 11 and the legs 12 and 13 thereof extend downwardly in contact with each other and the lower end of leg 13 is bent around the lower end of leg .12 to retain the same in position. Extending upwardly and forwardly from the upper portion of body 11 at one end thereof is a linger rest 14 upon which the finger of the operator rests when the device is in use.
project therethrough a short distance. Leg
12 has a point 20 pressed inwardly near the edge of the cut-away portion to provide additional tension to hold the blade in place in the holder. A slotted tube 18 having a longitudinal slot 19 of a width equal to the thickness of the blade holder is adapted to fit upon the lower end of the holder as best shown in Fig. 2 to inclose the cutting edge of the blade as a guard against injury to the user while the cutter is being carried in the pocket or otherwise. In using my holder with blades having a backbone the blades will be inserted as shown in Figs. l to 4 inclusive but in using a narrow blade not provided with a backbone the guard tube 18 is inserted within body portion 11 to provide backing for the blade as best shown in Fig. 5.
In the use of my device the guard is first removed. The holder is held between the thumb and middle finger with the tip of the forenger resting upon finger piece 14 and the-middle finger within the semi-circular finger Vpiece 15. The cutter is held at an angle to the material to be cut and is drawn along the same, the forefinger being used to exert the necessary pressure and the middle finger being used to ,draw the blade along the material to be cut. i
Having described my invention what I claim is.
1. A cutter comprising a holder adapted for the reception of a cutter blade, said holder being formed of a single piece Vof metal bent intermediate lits `ends to form parallel legs and having a finger piece yprojecting fronrthe bent portion at oneend, and another nger piece projecting from one of the vlegs at the opposite end; said legs 'ha-ving their corners cut away at one end to expose a portion of the cutting edge of said Y blade and a vcutter blade detachably mount- `ed unsald holder; and a detachable guard for thefcutting edge of said blade. n 2. A safety cutter comprising a `holder adapted for Vthe reception of a cutter fblade;
said fho'lder being formed of a single piece .of meta-l bent vintermediate itsendsto form parallel sides and having a finger piece pro- Jeeting from the top thereof at one end; and
'another finger piece projecting from one of the sides at the opposite end; and a cutter lblade detachably mounted in said Vholder witha 4portion of the cutting edgerthereof at one end exposed; anda detachable shield for said exposed cutting edge.
3. A cutter comprising a holder adapted for 'the reception of a cutter blade, said yholder being formed of a single piece of metal bent intermediate its ends to form an -arc'h spring 'tending to force the sides of Said `holder itogether to grip said blade and fharing the 'lower edge of one side bent to overlap fthe adjacent edge of the other side :to closethe opening'therebetween, said holder j'havinfrone corner thereof cut awa to eX- pose a portion Vof the cutting edgerof said :blade and a `lug projecting from the front end of one of said sides at Vthe Vupper termination `of the cut away portion `bent to -projectacross the opening between said ends to formastop for the front end of the blade, and a finger rest extending forwardly and upwardly from'the front end of the arched portion vthereof and a semicircular finger piece extending rearwardly and laterally from the opposite end of one of said sides, substantially as described.
Li. yThe combination with a blade of -a holder therefor, said holder being formedof a single piece of metal bent intermediate its ends `to forni parallel sides, one of said sides being longer than the other and being 'bent at the 'lower y'edge thereof to 'overlap the lower edge of the vother side and close the jecting from the front end of one of said f Y l.sides at the upper termination of the cutV away portion; said lug being "bent t0 PO" Y ject across theopening between said ends VVto form a. stop for said blade; a finger rest'eX- tending forwardly at an angle fromrthe frontend of the bent portion of said-holder 'Y and integral therewith; and la semi-circular finger'pie'ce extending rearwardly and laterally from the `opposite end of one 4of said.
