Be it known that I, ROBERT BURNS, J r., a citizen of the United States, and residing at the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements `in Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoists and has particular reference to hoists of the type wherein the prime mover runs continuously, and wherein it is desired to intermittently drive and brake the winding drinn in order to control the load.
llVliere the prime mover is a gas engine, it is objectionable to haveto frequently start and stop it, it is also objectionable to employ a larger engine than is absolutely necessary. In order to use a small engine, and to increase the capacity, it is preferable to gear down from the prime mover to the winding drum, and heretofore it has been proposed in hoists of this type to either control directly on the drum, or on a part moving at the same speed as the drum.
An object of this invention is to provide increased braking power, and increased delicacy of control, by providing a controlling drum which operates faster than the winding drum. Thereby, a much more sensitive control of the winding drum is attained, and a skilled operator is able to raise or lower and position loads much more accurately and rapidly than where the ordinary braking mechanism is provided.
A further object of the invention resides in the mounting of the braking devices to permit easy adjustment and equalization, and also permitting the brakes to equally clear the drum when released, without drag ging. As shown herein, each brake consists of two bands which are suspended on the actuating shaft, and adjustably connected at their other ends so as to permit of being positioned properly with relation to the drum and also capable of moving bodily, and pivoting relatively to each other sufficiently so as to clear the drum when released. This is accomplished by means of an adjusting stud connected to each brake band and the studs bear on each other so as to form a rolling abutment, permitting` the studs and the bands to pivot relatively to each other during the operation. The bands thus clear the drum when loose without the necessity of employing springs,

The drinn 8 is provided with ratchet teeth 9 which are engaged by a pawl 10 carried by a rod 11. pivoted at 12 on the base, The drinn 8 carries bearings 13 in which is mounted a shaft 14, to which is keyed at one end `the brake drum 15'. Carried by the winding drum 8 is the holding drum 16.
Keyed on the shaft 4 is a collar 16 carrying an internal gear 17 which meshes with pinions 18 mounted on studs 19 carried by the winding drum 8. The pinions 18 mesh with a center pinion 2O keyed to the shaft 14C. The drums 15, 16 each carry brakes such as shown in Fig. 3, and a description of one will sur'iice for the other. Each brake consists of two semi-circular bands 22 having lugs 23 at their upper ends carrying oppositely threaded nuts v241 which receive the threads of shaft 25, The shaft 25 is mounted in bearings 26 carried by rods 27 secured to the base. 28 is an operating handle keyed to the shaft 25, and on the other end is a gear 29 which meshes with a similar gear 30 on the other brake controlling shaft 31. The shaft 31 is also provided-with a controlling handle 33. l/Vhen one brake is put on, the other is automatically thrown off owing to the gear connection between the shafts 25 and 31. rPhe gear connection may be omitted if desired. On the ylower side, the base carries a plate 34 provided with slotted lugs 35, and sliding in each of the lugs 35 is a headed stud 36 which is threaded into the lower brake band lug 37. The heads of the studs 36 are rounded as shown, so that they can roll on each other and also pivot relatively to each other. The studs 36 can also be turned by a screw-driver or by squared ends 38, as shown, for adjustment. By turning the studs, the lower ends of the brake band can be moved outward or inward, and by reason of the slots 35 limited vertical movement is permitted. Also, the rounded heads constitute a universal thrust joint or pivot between the two brake bands,
so that they can pivot relatively Vto each other in operation, and fall clear of the drum when loose. By this construction both bands are independently adjustable, but can be applied simultaneously with equal pressure. The rotative thrust in either direction is taken up by the lugs through the rounded studs, independently of the actuating means.
A further advantage of this invention resides in the mounting of the drum in exposed bearings Which can be oiled readily Without special construction. The control shaft 14, is practically a fioating shaft subject only to torsion, and owing to the arrangement, its bearings have little or no load, as compared with the main drum bearings.
By this invention is provided a hoisting mechanism by Which a variable hoisting ratio can be obtained, and embodying a sensitive friction control element driven at a higher speed than the Winding di'um.
What is claimed, is: Y
1. A Winding drum, a plurality of driving pinions mounted on one end of said drum,
driving means comprising an internal gear meshing with said pinions, and a friction controlling drum having a gear meshing directly With said pinions.
2. A Winding drum, a plurality of driving pinions mounted on one end of said drum, driving means comprising an internal gear meshing with said pinions, a revoluble shaft, a pinion on said shaft meshing with said driving pinions, and a friction controlling drum fastened on said shaft and rotating therewith. Y 3. A hoist comprising a base carrying bearing standards, a drum having external end bearings supported therein, internal bearings carried by the drum, a revoluble shaft in said bearings extending through the drum, a pinion on the shaft, planet driving pinions carried on one end of the drum and meshing With said shaft pinion, driving means meshing with said pinions, and a controlling friction drum carried by said revoluble shaft at the other end of the drum.
4. A hoist comprising a driving shaft cariying an internal gear, a Winding drum carrying pinions meshing with said internal gear, a shaft journaled in said winding drinn carrying a pinion meshing vvith said Winding drum pinions, and frictional means.

7. A hoist comprising a base, driving fmeans, supporting means therefor, a Winding drum geared at one end to said driving means, separate supporting means therefor, a friction drum on the other end of said Winding drum, a controlling drum adjacent said friction drum, a brake band for each of said drums, and a common guide carried on the base for both of said brakes.
8. A Winding drum, driving gearing, and a controlling drinn driven `at a higher speed than the Winding drum.
9. A Winding drum, driving means, an interposed planetary gear, and a controlling drum connected to the planetary gear to rotate at a higher speed than the Winding drum.
l0. A hoist comprising a base carrying bearings, a Winding drum journaled in said bearings, a separately mounted driving means, a driving connection between one end of said drum and said driving means outside of the drum bearing, a controlling means outside the other drum bearing, and a shaft carrying said controlling means havinga pinion meshing With said drum driving connection.
