SHIP-FLOATING DEVICE.
Application filed January 31, 1917.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SUGAJI SUZUKI, a citizen of the Empire of Japan, and a resident of Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Ship-Floating Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a novel means for connecting inflatable bags around a ship or other object, for raising the ship or other object. Fastening means are provided which prevent water from passing between the bags, and there are also means which permit of the inflation of the bags with air or some other fluid.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a View showing in elevation a ship around the bow of which my device is secured;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view showing one of the inflatable bags with a part broken away to illustrate the construction;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3;

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a plurality of bags 15 are provided, stiifening plates 16 being disposed at the middle portions of the sides of the bags 15, and bolts 17 being disposed through the stiffening plates 16 and the sides of the bags 15 for securing the stiffening plates 16 against the sides of the bags 15 and the sides of the bags 15 in contact with each Specification of Letters Patent.

other. Bolts 1S are also disposed through the stiffening plates 16 and the sides of the bags 15. Rings 19 or hooks 20 are articulated to the ends of the bolts 18 to assist in securing the bags 15 to the sides of a ship 21. The ends of the stiffening plates 16 are curved at 22 so that they will press the sides of the bag 15 at those points against vertically extending pipes 23 which lead to the bag 15 above and below the stiffening plates 16. The' pipe 23 has a branch 2-1 which extends through an opening 25 in one of the stiffening plates 16, the branch 211 having an elbow 26 at which there is a valve having a winged operating member 27. A collar 28 is disposed on a pipe 29 beyond the valve, this collar 28 having arms 30 spaced apart for embracing the winged member 27, for holding the winged member 27 in open or closed position. The pipe 29 is connected with a similar pipe on an adjacent bag, so that the air will pass from one bag to the other bags, it being sufficient if air or other fluid is admitted into one or two of the bags, for this air or other fluid will pass from the said bag or bags to the remaining bags.
Stiffening members 31 are disposed between the curved ends 22 of the stiffening plates 16 and the sides of the bag 15 at that point, the bolts 17 passing through the stiening members 31 for holding the said stiffening members in position.
The bags 15 are preferably disposed at each side of the ship, and the bottoms of these bags 15 are secured together by VUeshaped members 32, between the sides 33 and 34: of which the adjacent edges of neighboring bags are disposed, there being a threaded orifice 35 in the side 33 of the U-shaped member 32 in which a screw 36 is disposed, this screw 36 serving to move a clamping member 37 against the edges of the bags to press the edges of the bags against the sides 341 of the U-shaped members 32. In a similar manner the verticai edges of the bags 15 are secured together by means of the U-shaped members 32, one of the U-shaped members 32 serving to connect an edge of the forward bag 15 at one side of the ship with an edge of the forward bag 15 at the other side of the ship. As has been stated, the interior of each bag is connected with the interior of the neighboring bags by means of the pipes, the valves commanding the communications being open When the bags are in use. The bags 15 are secured to longitudinally extending chains 38 at the sides of the ship by means .of the hooks 20, the chains 38 being held in desired positions by means of vertically eX- tendingy chains 39. To the rings 19 there may be secured additional bags 40 which are illustrated in Figs. 2, G and 7 of the drawings, the bottoms of these'bags V40 being secured together bystiiiening plates 41 and bolts42. 4Pipes 43 enter the bags 40, the

In addition to .the bolts42, bolts 46 `are disposed through the stifi'ening plates 41 and g the sides of the bags 40, the said bolts hav- Y ing rings or hooks 47 at their ends, byy which means theymay be connectedwith the hooks 2O orthe rings 19 on the bolts 18.

2. In a ship ioatingdevice, ahplurality of iniiatable bags having edges, and clamping kmeans for securing; together -.the adjacent .edges of neighboring bags.
3. In, a ship floating'device, a plurality of iniiatable bags disposed side by side, clamping means `fertsecuringtogether the adjacent edges efneighboring bags, azpipe extending fromthe interior of eachbag, and means for 4( :onneeting the pipes.
4 Infaship floating-device, a plurality of .inatable bags disposed side by side, clamping means for seeuringtogether .the Aadjacent edges of neighboring bags, a pipe extending from the interior of each bag, a step having an operating Wing for each pipe, a sleeve slidable on each pipe and having arms for embracing the operating Wings, and means for connecting the pipes.
5.v In a ship floating device, a plurality of inflatable bags, fastening means on the bags Abottoms of the bags at the other side o1' the ship, and clamping means for securing together the adjacent vertical edges of neighboring bags.
7. In a ship ioating device, a plurality oi intlatable bags which are adapted to be disposed some at'oiie side of the ship and the remainder at the other side of the ship, clainpingmeans for securing the bottoms of the bags` at one side of the ship With the bettomsofthe bags at the other side of the ship, clamping means for securing together `the adjacent vertical edges of neighboring bags, a pipe extending from the interior of each bag, and means for connecting the l pipes.
