ISO GILBERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July MI), 1911?.
Application filed August 20, 1915. Serial Ito. 46,446.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I,' IsAAo GILBERT, a clt zen of the United States, .residing at Chlcago, in the county of Cook and State of.
Illino1s, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates heels which are made of yielding material, such as rubber, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel and improved heel of this kind and attaching means therefor.
In the accompanying drawing, formlng a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe equipped with my improved heel;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the heel detached from the shoe, and FFig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 33 of Referring specifically to the drawing, the heel 5 is a solid block of rubber having permanently secured to its top face, by cementing or otherwise, a sheet of leather 6 having the same outline as the heel. This leather strip forms a base for the rubber heel and obviates the necessity of building up a heel base by the shoemaker. On top of the leather strip, at the center thereof, is cemented or otherwise permanently secured a stri 7 of canvas to assist in cementing'the leat or strip to the shoe bottom, and also to prevent squeaking. The heel is secured to the shoe by cementing the leather base 6 and strip 7 to the bottom thereof as shown in to boot and shoe Fig. l, and also by driving nails through the heel into the shoe, the heel having apertures 8 for this purpose. By cementing the heel on, its edges are prevented from getting loose and letting in water and dirt.
It will be noted that the heel has a transverse taper, which makes it thicker toward one slde. As most persons wear out the heel quicker on one side than on the other, the added thickness makes for a longer life of the heel, the heel being placed with its thickest side on that side which the person wears out the fastest. The heel can be placed so that the thickest portion is on either side.
The leather strip 6 is slightly concave at the front, as shown in Fig. 3. This makes the heel fit tightly when nailed down, the leather strip then flattening under tension.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a rubber heel having a sheet of leather permanently attached to its top face and completely covering the same to pro vide a cementing surface for attachment to the shoe, and a fabric strip permanently secured to the outer face of the leather sheet and terminating short of the edges thereof.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC GILBERT.
