Application natrovw 9,1900, serial No. 341915; Renewed November 2, 1916. Serial n. 129,232.
To all whom'it may concern Be it known that. I, Harm: H. GUTLER, a citizen ofthe Unitedv States, residin at Milwaukee; in the county of Milwau ee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and Devices forMiiltiphase Motors of which t e followingisafu 1, clear, concise, vand exact descrip tion, reference being. had to the accompanyg drawing, forming a part of this. specification) a 1 invention relates to improvements in "starting devices for, multiphase motors.
Qnetof the. objects of my invention is to provide means ,farremoving resistance from the-motorclrcuit'in sucha manner that-the r'notorwillgradually increase 1nv speed with- 0\lt undue; strain u on the motor or power circuit. I, have.-.i ustrated in. the accompanying Figure 1 .a.-diagr-amm-atic view of oneoi the-circuitarrangements -for the pura pose of disclosing my invention.-
.iIn Fig 2'1 have shown-an end view of H the drumnand. ratchet arrangement here inafter to be described.
In the drawing,.-I have illustrated the rotor 2 of a three-phase alternating current motor providedwith the-three sets of resistanoes 3,,4,.and 5. Eachsetofresistance is connected-with arcollectoraring onthe rotor ofithe motor, and isdivided ,into sections.

right of the drum a con ant-.13 is provided whichis ins'u- At the extreme lated cm the drum 'and'; ..extends clear aroundthe-same I have illustrated in the drawing the insulated material as being interposed" between theend of the drum and thereof, but anyamanner of insulat'i ing the contactsegment 13 from'the .drum
trated in the drawing, are a number of contactfingers 14, 15, 16' and 17 the purposes of which will appear more fully hereinafter.
F or the purpose of rotating the drum, I have provided upon the end thereof a series of ratchet teeth 18 adapted to be en aged and operated by a ratchet 19 connecte with the core of the solenoid 20. This is arranged to automatically make and break its own circuit, whereby the core will be alternately raised and lowered.v For effecting this operation one terminal of the solenoid is coniiected by the conductor 21 with the movable switch 22, the opposite end of which is arranged toengage a' contact 23 connected by the conductor 24 with the finger 15. The opposite terminal ofthe solenoid is 'con- 7 nected-by" conductors 25 and'26 with the middle wire 28 ofthe supply wires 27, 28 and29. The upper end of the core 30'of the solenoid 20 is provided wit \nj extension 31-upon which are arrangeda pair of adjustable nuts 32 and 33 which are .ar-
ranged toengage the switch 2-2' .to operate vthe S21E13; The solenoid 20 is alsoprovided dj fi} d -12, h v ill'i'ist atil hpthe nergized longer than if this paralleled path -diagraniniatic' view ofj-ithe drawing the "YR-I\ --r1ouscontactsas being electrically connected this the tiinepf.deiinergization may be v variedrandthe rapidity ot reciprocation of a solenoid 39 having oneiterminal thereofconnected by the conductor 40 through a .mainliand switch 41 with the middle-con- "d-uctor 28 ;.of the niain line. The opposite terminal of the solenoid 39 is connected by conductor 42 withthe first conductor 27 of switch '36 is connected by conductor with the third wire 29 of the main line and the contact 6 of this switch is connected by the conductor 47 with the third terminal 48 of the stator of the motor. One terminal of the switch 37 is connected by conductor 49 with the middle wire 28 of the main line and the contact 50 of said switch is connected by conductor 51 with the middle terminal 52 of the stator of the motor. The first terminal 53 of the stator' of the motor is connected by conductor 54 with the first wire 27 of the main line.
A relay device comprising a solenoid 55 and a contact member 56 carried by the core thereof which is arranged to contact with the terminals 57 and 58 and 59 and 60, is arranged for controlling the circuit through the solenoid 39. One terminal of the solenoid 55 is connected by conductors 42 and 42 with the first wire 27 of the main line and the other terminal thereof is connected 'by conductor'40 and the hand switch 41 with the middle wire 28 of the main line. A branch conductor 61 also extends from one terminal of the solenoid 55 to the terminal 58 and terminal of the switch controlled'by said solenoid. The terminal 57 of this switch is connected byconductor 62 with the contact finger 16 and the terminal 59 of the switch is connected by conductor 63 with the contact finger 14.
In operation, assuming that the contact fingers 15 to 17 .are in engagement with the bottom of the contact segment 13, when the inain hand switch 41 is closed the circuit will be closed from the middle conductor of the main line through the conductor 40 through the winding of the solenoid 55 and thence by conductors42f and 42 back to the first wire 27 of the main line. This energizes the solenoid causing it to raise i core and connect the terminals 57 and 8 by the contact- 56. The circuit, is thereupon closed through the winding of the solenoid 20, from'the middle wire 28 of the main line through conductors 26 and 25 through the winding of the solenoid by i conductor 21 across the switch 22 by conductor 24 to the contact finger 15, across the contact segment 13 to the contact finger 16, thence by conductor 62 toterminal 57, across the contact 56 to terminal 58 and by .condu'ctors 61, 42' and 42 back to the first wire 27 of the main line. At the same time the circuit is closed by way of conductors 26 and 40 through the windingof the solenoid 39 by conductor 44 to the contact finger 17 across the contact segment 13'to the contact finger 16, thence 'by conductor 62 across the terminals 57 and.,.;5 8 by contact 56, and by.
wires 61, 42 and 42 to the first wire 27 of the main line. The solenoid 39 is thereby ener ized, closing the switches 36 and; 37 whic control the circuit through the stator of th motor.
The solenoid 20 having been energized, will raise its core causing the ratchet 19 to engage the teeth 18 on the drum 12 and rotate the drum one step whereby the first of each of the sets of contacts E), 10'and 11 will engage the first finger of each of the sets of finger-5 3, 4 and 5. The motor will now operate with all of the resistance in the rotor circuit.
As the core 30 of the solenoid 20 is raised, the nut 33 will strike the switch arm 22 and open the circuit through the solenoid which will permit its coreto drop. As the core drops, the switch 22 again closes, closing the circuit through the solenoid and the solenoid immediately raises its core, turning the drum another step, thereby short circuiting one-section of the resistances 3, 4 and 5, and increasing thevspeed of the motor. At the same time the contact finger 17 will .pass off the portion 64 of the contact segment 13 and the circuit through the solenoid 39 instead of passing by way of contact fingers 16 and 17 will pass throughithe resistance 43, which so reduces the current passing through the solenoid that while there is sufiicient current to maintain the core of the solenoid raised there is not sufficient to raise the core in event the same is d p ed. The operation of the core of the solenoid 20 continues to rotate the drum 12, utting out sections of the resistances 3, 4 nd 5 until the last of the contacts 9, 10 reached when the motor will be running at fullspeed with the starter in aft 11 on posi- 3 tion. When the last of the con acts 9, 10
and 11 is reached, the contact finger 16 will have passed off the section 65 of the'con tact segment 13, thereby opening the circuit of the reciprocating solenoid 20 and the solenoid will remain at rest. In event-now, the main switch 41 is opened to stop the motor, the solenoid 39 will be denergized, dropping its core and thereby opening the switches- 36 and 37 which control the circuit of the stator. of the motor and at the same time the circuit through the solenoid 55 will 'be'topened, and its core will drop and open the circuit between the terminals 57 and 58.f
The dropping of the core of the solenoid 55, however, will cause the contact 56 to engage the contacts 59-and 60 which immediately closes a circuit through the solenoid 20 by way of conductors 26 and 25 through the solenoid winding 20, conductor 21, switch 22, conductor 24, contact finger-15, contact finger 14, conductor 63, across the terminals 59 and "60.by way of conductor contact 66, conductors 61, 42" and 42, back to the first wire 27 of the main line. The solenoid thus being energized will raise its core and move the drum 12 another step and the contact finger 14 will move off the portion 66 of the contact segment 13, thereby opening the circuit (of the solenoid 20 but moving .the
of the solenoid 39 and the solenoid 55.will
be deenergized to permit its core to drop, but the contact 56 engaging terminals 59 and 60 will maintain the circuit through the solenoid 20 and it will continue to rotate the drum until the finger 1 moves off the section 66'of the segment 13 when the drum will be in starting position. It will therefore be seen that no matter in what position the drum may be when the motor is stopped,
it will always be moved to starting position before the solenoid 20 ceases to operate.
