GATE 0R DOOR CLOSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1917.
Application filed February 28, 1917. Serial No. 151,524.
To all '10 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL A. ITAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Graham, in the county of Young and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate or Door Cl0s-- This invention relates to improvements in closing devices for doors, gates and the like, and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of this nature including a contractile spring, and novel, simple" and etticient means for connecting the spring in operative position to a door and door frame, or to a gate and gate post.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in w. ich:
Figure l is an elevation of a swinging gate, with the improved closing device associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the gate post, showing the mannerof connecting one end of the spring to the gate post.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the letter A designates, for conventional purposes, a swinging gate, and the letter B designates a pair of opposed gate posts, to one of which the gate A has hinge connection. Mounted on that gate post that has hinge connection with the gate is a bracket including a horizontally disposed arm 1, one end of. which is provided with a flanged head 2, the said head 2 being secured to the adjacent gate post in any suit able manner. The arm 1 is provided with a threaded portion 3, which is threadedly received by one end of a contractile helical spring 4. The opposite end of the helical spring 4 has the terminal thereof extended horizontally, as shown at 5, andthence bent to form an eye 6, which slidably receives a horizontal rod 7. The rod 7 is associated with the gate A, and has its opposite ends bent into parallelism, as shown at 8, and received by openings in plates 9 that are socured to the gate A.
When the gate A is swung outwardly the eye 6 will slide along the rod 7, in a direction toward the hinged end of the gate A, p
and the outer end of the spring 4 will be flexed laterally from a point at the outer end of the rod 1, and tensioned so that when the gate is released from open position, the spring will return to normal and effect closing of the gate. Owing to thesliding connection between the outer end of the spring, and the rod 7 the tension of the spring 4 from the time the gate is initially opened, to the time that it reaches its maximum open position, will be constant.
The convolutions of the spring serve as threads for cooperating with the threaded,
It is evident that various changes might be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus'described my invention what I claim as new, is:
The combination with a hinged closure and a support therefor, of an arm carried by the support and having a threaded portion, a coil spring having one end receiving the threaded portion of the arm and having its opposite end provided with an eye, and a rod carried by the closure and slidably received by the eye on' the last-mentioned end of the spring, for the purpose specified.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
ROYAL A. HAWLEY. Witnesses:
W. T. FINCH, W. H. LOGAN.
