To all 'whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL P. HA'roHn'rT and GEORGE L. BILLARD, citizens of the United States, and residents of Mogollon, in the county of Socorro andA State of New Mexico, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in permutation locks for use with electric switches.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel lock whereby the operation of the switch can only be accomplished by' authorized persons, and to this end the invention includes a casing in which is mounted a locking member adapted to engage in the usual notches of the tumblers or disks of a permutation lcck, when said notches are alined, and means operated by the switch stem for operating the locking member.
Another object is the provision of means for :preventing access to the interior of the casing by securing sections thereof together through the medium cfa novel locking device, the opening of said casing being controlled by positioning the tumblers of the permutation lock so that the notches therein will receive said lockingr device, whereby said sections of the casing may be separated.
The inventiveidea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical Vexpressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the inventiom is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock casing constructed in accordance with the invention. p

The invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings is designed primarily to protect the ignition, or self-starter system of automobiles against unauthorized use; and also to give a like protection to the motor systems of electrically driven automobiles. rlhe invention preferably comprises a casing consisting of the main body portion 10, having a flange 11 on the side thereof and receiving therein the vliange 12 of the closure 13, said flanges 11 and 12 being secured and locked together in. a manner which will appear in the course of the description. Secured interiorly of the body portion of the casing and adjacent the bottom thereof is the base 14 of lan electric switch of ordinary construction, said base being made of insulated material. The switch is of the snap type now commonly used, andincludes a rotary switch stem 15, which projects through the front ofthe casing and is provided on its outer end with a knob `orhandle 16.
A combination dial `17 is mounted in the front of the closure 13 of the casing, and forms a bearing for the outer end of the switch stem 15, said dial having mounted upon its inner end and interiorly of the casing, a gear 18, which meshes with a similar 19 mounted upon a stub-shaft 20, which has one end thereof' mounted in a suitable bearingQl inthe closure 13, adjacent the upper end thereof.
Upon the stub shaft Q0, are mounted a plurality of -tumblers'or disks 22 to one of which the gear 19 is secured, said disks having peripheral notches Q3 therein, which are adapted to be alined in the usualv manner for the purpose of unlocking the switch.
,The switch locking means consists of a rotary element 24k in the form of a wheel mounted upon the switch stem 15 intermediate its ends and interiorly 'of the casing. This wheel is provided upon its periphery `with a plurality of cam surfaces 25 forming shoulders 26.
Guiding and supporting bars, 27 are arranged transversely of the interior of the casing on each side of the rotary element 24C,
- as shown in Fig. 2, and are notched as indicated at 28 to receive therein the ends of a locking member 29, `preferably in the form of va bar, and normally retained in engagement with said notches 28 by means of spring pressed bolts 30, having one end ccnnected to said locking member and extending downwardly through said guide bars 27, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The spring pressed bolts 30 are only necessary when the switch is in other than an upright position and may be dispensed with. When in this position the locking member 29 will engage one of the shoulders 26 of the rotary element 24, and will also be interposed between the adj acent cam surface 25 and the periphery of the dierent tumblers 22 of the permutation lock, so that rotation of the element 24 through the medium of the switch stem 15 is absolutely prevented, when the notches 23 are not alined.
Now, if it be desired to unlock the switch so that sainel may be operated, the dial 17 is iirst turned until the known combination has adjusted the different tumblers 22, so that the notches 23 therein are all alined and in registration with the locking member 29` Then by rotating the knob 16 of the switch in one direction, the cam surface 25 which abuts the locking member 29 will cause the same to be forced upwardly into the notches 23, it being understood that the latter are of a width slightly greater than that of said locking member.
By giving the element 24 a quarter rotation, the contacts of the switch are closed, and the locking member 29 is then retracted from the notches 23 and into engagement with the adjacent shoulder 26.
If so desired, the tumblers 22 may then be rotated by the dial 17, so as to bring the notches 23 out of alinement, whereupon thc switch is again locked.
The invention further contemplates the locking of sections of the casing 10 together against unauthorized access to the interior thereof, and for this purpose the flanges 11 and 12 are provided with alined openings 31 and screw threaded, as best illustrated in Fig. 4, to receive a locking device, including a. bolt 32, a portion of which is screw threaded to engage the openings 31.
The inner end 33 of the bolt is reduced and has secured thereto a locking bar 34, the same being preferably recessed, as indicated at 35 to receive a washer 36 mounted upon the reduced end 33 of the bolt and retained in position by means of a cotter pin 37.
The lock bar 34 is preferably mounted between the flanges 38 of a guide element 39 provided with an opening 40 to receive the screw threaded portion of the bolt 32 when the same is adjusted inwardly. When the locking device is in the position shown in Fig. 4, sections of the casing are securely locked in position, and any inward adjustment of the bolt 32 is prevented by contact of the locking bar 34 with the periphery of the tumblers 22 of the combination lock, which is arranged adjacent to said locking device. Should it be desired to separate the sections of the casing, the tumblers 22 are adjusted by the known combination, so that the notches 23 thereof will aline and register Copies of this patent may be obtained for with the lock bar 34, whereupon it is possible to adjust the locking device inwardly until said lock bar 34 engages the notches 23, whereupon the outer extremity of the bolt 32 will be below the outer surface of the inner flange 12, and when in this position the sections 10 and 13 can be disconnected.
What is-claimed is 1. In a permutation lock, a plurality of tumblers having notches in their peripheries, an operating member, a rotary element car- Vried by the operating member, and a movable locking member arranged between the rotary element and tumblers and in close relation with the said tumblers, said rotary element being provided with means for moving the locking member into the notches of the tumblers when desired, said means serving also to hold the said member against the peripheries of the tumblers, when their notches are out of alinement.
2. In a permutation lock, a casing, a plurality of tumblers having notches in their peripheries, an operating member, a rotary element on the operating member and provided with cam surfaces terminating in shoulders, and a bodily movable locking member having sliding and guided movement in the casing, said member normally resting upon the rotary element against the shoulder thereof and adapted to be` moved by the cam surfaces of said element into the notches of the tumblers. 3. In a permutation lock the combination of a sectional casing, the sections of which being provided with registering openings, a locking device for retaining the sections of the casing in locked position and including a screw threaded bolt adjustably mounted in` said openings, a lock bar carried by the inner end of said bolt, and a plurality of tumblers in said casing and having notches adapted to be alined to receive said lock bar when said bolt is adjusted, whereby the sections of said casing are disconnected.
4. In aL permutation lock the combination 0f a sectional casing, the sections of which being provided with registering openings, a locking device for retaining the sections of the casing in locked position and including a screw threaded bolt adjustably mounted in said openings, a lock bar carried by the innerend of said bolt, a plurality of tumblers in said casing and having notches adapted to be alined to receive said klock bar .when said bolt is adjusted, whereby the sections of said casing are disconnected, and a guide member for said lock bar having an opening for receiving saidbolt when the same is adljusted to open the casing;
