UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIGE.
FERDINAND SCHOETTLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR CUTTING HAT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,127, dated January 30, 1872.
Specication describing a certain Die for Cutting the Bodies of Silk and other Hat- Boxes, invented by Ferdinard Schoettle, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
The invention relates to a die composed of adjustable cutters, by means of which hat boxes of any size and form can be cut from pasteboard or other suitable material.
Figure l is a perspective view of a die enr bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a vi ew ofthe side or body of a silk-hat box as cut by the die. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a silk-hat box, the lid being removed. Fig. 5 is a top view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows the curvature ot' the bottom, to correspond with hat-bodies of different heights.
The die consists of the four knives or cutters, A B C C, which cut or form from pasteboard or othersuitable material, respectively, the top or upper curve D, the bottom curve E, and the height or length of the side F of the box, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 ofthe accompanying sheets of drawing. Each knifeis suitably attached to an adjustable set-block, G, Figs. l and 2, of the head H ot' a hydraulic or other press. To easily adjust the said blocks they have slotted bolt-openings a, through which the set-bolts I pass. The curvature of the upper knife A is iixed, while that of the lower one B is made variable by means of the set or adjusting-screws b b c c on both sides of the same. The cutter, as shown at Figs. l and 2, cut the side or form F, Figs. 3, 4, and 5. When the size of the lid of the hat-box is to bc increased or reduced the knife A must be replaced by one of the proper length and curvature, andthe side knives C C either spread or contracted, which causes a variation in the curve of the bottom knife B. When a hat-box of increased height or length ot' side F is required-as, for instance, the increase (l d', Fig. (-the knives C C must be spread and thelower knife B curved to correspond by setting its ends at the ends e of the side knives by means of the outer and inner end adjusting-screws b b c o. The distance ff at the center ofthe die must equal the distance g g of the side knives, which is accomplished by means of the outer and inner center adjusting-screws L h. The bottom J of a hat-box, Fig. 5, is cut out by a distinct die. The length of the curve of the bottom knife B is always the same. The variation in its curvature depends upon the height ofthe hat-box. The upper knife Awill always cut for one size box-lid. It' the box is intended to contain a hat with an increased width of rim, then another upper cut-ter must be used, the bottom and side knives remaining the same.
I claim as my invention- A die for cutting the bodies of hat-boxes, composed of an upper knife, A, a variable curvin g knife, B, and the adjustable side knives C C', for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name.
FERDINAND SCHOETTLE.
