Be it known that I, WARREN H. HUNGER- roan, av citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power-Transmitting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in power transmitting or speed changing apparatus, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide an etiicient and durable apparatus by means of which power may be uniformly transmitted from any.
suitable driving mechanism or motor to a driven mechanism.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a power transmitting apparatus in which the power, regardless of the speed at which said apparatus is rotating, shall be constantly and uniformly transmitted to the driven mechanism.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a power transmitting apparatus which will operate noiselessly, and without momentary retardation'of its parts which ordinarily causes a hammering or other objectionable action.
Further, said invention has for its object to provide a power transmitting apparatus having a rotary piston having blades there on, an abutment in rolling engagement with said piston provided with a recess for receiving said blades, and means for bypassing the liquid which would otherwise be momentarily caged intermediate the side of said blades, and the'wall of said recess, and thereby momentarily cause a variation in the movement or speed of the apparatus or cause a water hammer action.
Other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the noveldetails of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

In this application I have shown my invention in connection with a power transmitting apparatus of the character shown and described in my United States Letters Patent No. 1,155,314 dated Septemben 28, 1915.
In the drawings 10 designates a base which may be of any suitable form and provided at its opposite ends with supports having bearings 12, 12 at their upper ends.
Intermediate said bearings is mounted a cylindrical casing 13, whose outer surface may be formed as a gear wheel or as a pulley wheel. The said casing is composed of a 'casing portion 14, and a cover portion 15, which is bolted along lts edge to the open end of said casing portion 14. A thin sheet of packing material 17 is interposed between said cover portion 15 and the casing portion 14' in order to form a fluid tight joint.
The casing portion 14 is provided at its right hand end with a shaft section 14 which is supported adjacent to its outer end in the bearing 12, and the cover portion 15 at the left hand end of said casing portion 14 is provided with a tubular shaft section 15 arranged in alinement with the shaft section of the casing 14, and supported adjacent to said cover portion 15 in the bearing 12.
The casing portion 14 is provided upon its inner side with a segmental partition ' triinnions 20, 20
be'arings21, '21 provided in the cover portion 15 andthe casing portion 14. The said cylindrical member is rovided with a longitudinal recess 19, and to the forward end of said cylindrical member 19 is secured a small gear 22 which is bolted to the end of the cylindrical section 19 by a screw 22*.
The cylindrical member 19 is further provided along each of the opposite edges of the longitudinal recess 19 with a series of small, separated, inclined passages 19 extending from the outer surface of said cylindrical member 19 into said longitudinal recess 19, and terminating adjacent to the base thereof.

4 The said cylindrical member 20 is suitably keyed upon-a shaft 24, which has its outer end supportedin the tubular shaft 15 extending from the cover section 15, and its dinal recess 19 in member 19. Adjacent to the forward end inner end supported in the recess 14- provided in the innerend of the shaft section 14 extending from the casing portion 14. x The large cylindrical member 20 is provided with 'two oppositely arranged longitudinal vanes 25, 25 which are co-extensive in lengthwith said cylindrical member 20,
and are adapted to mesh with the longituthe smaller cylindrical of said cylindrical member 20 is arranged a large gear 26 which issecured by bolts 26", 26 to the end of said cylindrical member 20. The said gear 26 meshes with the smaller gear 22 secured to the cylindrical 26 and 22 is such that member, 19. The proportion of the gears ber 19 and 'its'gear 22 will make two complete, revolutions to one of the large gear 26, and the cylindrical member 20 to which it is secured.
The inn'er'surface of the cover portion 15 facing the gears 26 and 22, is recessed sufiieiently to receive said gears'in order that the cylindrical members 19, 20, will extend the full depth of the casing portion 14.
27 denotes a tapering valve which extends through a suitable opening arranged in the casing and cover portions, and passes through the channel formed between the inner circular wall of the casing portion 14,
' and the partition 18 therein, about midway of the distance of the ends of said partition,
and at a point diametrically opposite to the cylindrical member or abutment 19.
The valve 27 is provided at the forward end of 'the casing with a reduced screwthreaded portion 27 upon which are-fitted a washer 28, and nuts 29, 29*, whereby to hold said valve revolubly in place in said casing. The said valve 27 is also provided with a longitudinal opening '30, and mid way between said openings and valve is prosupported respectively in the cylindrical memvent the fluid-pressure injuring or distorting the same.
32 denotes an arm secured to the rear projecting end of said valve, and upon the end of said arm is provided a segmental rack 33.
Upon the shaft section 14 is arranged a sleeve section 34 which is adapted tovrotate with said shaft, and which is also adapted to be reciprocated upon said shaft owing to. the spline 35 engaging with the grooves provided in said shaft section 14 and sleeve section 34. 36 denotes a spiral groove arranged in the sleeve section 34, and 37 denotes a circumferentially grooved collar provided at the outer end of said sleeve 34. 38 denotes a sleevesurrounding the sleeve 34. The said sleeve 38 is provided at its inner end with a flange 38 having two oppositely arranged segmental slots 39 therein, through which extend bolts 40 which are so secured in the outer side -of'the casing 14 as to permit said sleeve 38 to be partially rotated upon sleeve 34, and 'to be secured to itsadjusted' position bysaid bolts 40. One portion of the periphery of the flange 38 intermediate the ends of said segmental slots 39 is provided with gear teeth 41 which mesh with the segmental rack 33'on the end of the arm 32, and 42 denotes a screw which extends through the sleeve 38, and into the spiral groove 36 in the sleeve 34, and is provided at its inner end with an anti-friction roller 42*.
43 denotes an arm having its lower end pivotally secured to the base 10 adjacent to the support provided with the bearing 12 and having its upper end bifurcated and provided with studs 45 extending into the circumferential groove of the collar 37 on the sleeve 34. The upper bifurcated ends of said arms 43'are connected by a trans verse member 46 and pivotally secured to an adjusting. screw 47 which extends through 110 a split bearing 49 forming part of the bearing 12 and provided with ahand Wheel 48. The split bearing 49 is provided with a bolt 50 for securing the screw to its adjusted position. The cover portion 15 is provided 115 with a suitable stufiingbox 52 through which the shaft 24 extends. I
.The casing portion 14 is provided with an opening sealed with a screw plug 53 through which the oil or other liquid for operating 120 the apparatus may be introduced into the casing. Upon the-outer end of the shaft 24 is fixed a pulley 54 which may be connected with the driving mechanism or source of power.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows If we assume that to the pulley at the power is being applied left hand end of the shaft 24, and that such shaft is being rotated 130 in the direction of the arrow Fig. 3, and assume. also that the valve 27 is open, as shown at Figs.2 and 3, the liquid in the casing 13 will be caused to be circulated therein in the direction ofthe arrows Fig. 3, by the rotation of the cylindrical members 19, 20, and the recess and vanes formed thereon. As the valve 27 is open, and the liquid can circulate freely within said casing, the said casing will remain substantially at rest.
\Vhen it is desired to cause said casing to rotate in order to transmit power to the mechanism to be driven, it merely becomes necessary to shift the valve 27 by means of the hand wheel 4L8, screw 47 and intermediate parts which will cause said valve 27 to be partially rotated, and thereby restrict the circulation of the fluid therethrough to a greater or less extent. The result of this retardation is that the casing 13 will be caused to rotate upon the shaft 21 at a speed less than that of the shaft.
By gradually closing the valve 27 through the medium of. the screw the circulation of the liquid within the casing becomes retarded, and in being so retarded the speed of the casing is gradually increased up to the point where the valve 27 iscompletely closed, and the circulation of the liquid in the casing completely interrupted. hen this occurs the casing 13 will rotate at substantially the same speed as the shaft 24.
By providing the cylindrical member 19 with the two series of inclined passages 19 all tendency of the vanes 25 on the cylindrical member 20 to be momentarily slightly retarded in their movement as the same are passing into and out of the longitudinal recess 19 in said cylindrical member 19 is vanes 25, as the same approach said wall in the course of the rotation of said cylindrical member 20, will prevent all hammering action and noise which would otherwise result. In addition hereto all tendency to momentarily interrupt the circulation of the fluidwithin the casing 13 will be wholly overcome and prevented.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An apparatus of the character described comprising a liquid containing casing, a plurality of connected compartments therein forming an endless passage, means for controlling the flow of fluid through said endless passage, a rotary piston disposed within said casing, blades on said rotary piston, and an abutment in rolling engagemcnt with said piston and arranged intermediate the communicating ends of said compartments, said abutment being provided with a blade-receivingrecess and with means for by-passing the fluid from said recess directly into said endless passage in the direction of the flow of the fluid therein as said blades pass'into and out of said recess in the course of rotation of said piston, substantially as specified.
2. An apparatus of the character de scribed comprising a liquid containing casing, a plurality of connected. compartments therein forming an endless passage, means for controlling the flow of fluid through said endless passage, a rotary piston disposed within said casing, blades on said rotary piston, and an abutment in rolling engagement with said piston and arranged intermediate the communicating ends of said compartments, said abutment being provided with a blade-receiving recess and with apertures extending from the outer surface thereof and communicating with said recess for by-passing the fluid from said recess directly into said endless passage in the direction of the flow of the fluid therein as said blades pass into and out of said recess in the course of rotation of said piston, substantially as specified.

An apparatus of the character described comprising a liquid containing casing, a plurality of connected compartments therein forming an endless passage, means for controlling the flow of fluid through said endless passage, a rotary piston disposed within said casing, blades on said rotary piston, and an abutment in rolling engagement with said piston and arranged intermediate the communicating ends of said compartments, said abutment being provided with a blade-receiving recess and with apertures extending from the outer surface thereof and communicating with said recess intermediate the top and bottom thereof for by-passing the fluid from said recess directly into said endless passage in the direction of the flow of the fluid therein as said blades pass into and out of said recess in the course of rotation of said piston, substantially as specified.

An apparatus of the character described comprising a liquid containing casing, a plurality of connected compartments therein forming an endless passage, means for controlling the flow of fluid through said endless passage, a rotary piston disposed within said casing, blades on said rotary piston, and an abutment in rolling engagement with said piston and arranged intermediate the communicating ends of said compartments, said abutment being provided with a blade-receiving recess and with apertures communicating with said recess and extending upwardly and outwardly with respect thereto for by-passing the fluid from said recess directly into said endless passage in the direction of the flow of the El fluid therein as said blades pass into and out of said recess in the course of rotation of said piston, substantially as specified.
