PROCESS OF lDYEING- BUGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 191?.
. Original application filed May 20, 1914, Serial No. 839,830. Divided and this application filed December 18,
1915. Serial No. 67,610.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER E. OLsoN, a
citizen .of the United States, and a residentof the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain 'new and useful Process of Dyeing Rugs, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apattern guide used in the process of dyeing rugs, the present application being a division of my Patent #1,198,373, dated September 12, 1916, for process for dyeing rugs and like articles.
The object of my invention is the production of a process through the medium of which, a clear and clean cut border or pattern may be formed upon a rug with ease and expedition.
Other objects will appear hereinafter..
The invention consists in the method and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 v is a fragmentary perspective view of a guide embodying one form of the invention, i
Fig. 2 is a perspectiv view, partially in section, of another form of guide,
Fig. '3 is a perspective view of a rug the pattern upon which has been worked out through the employment of guides embodying the invention, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section through th form shown in Fig. 1, showing the same in use.
One form of the invention, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, is designed for use particularly in the formation of a border or straight pattern upon a rug. This form comprises a guard or guide consisting of an elongated rectangular body 1, of-wood, upon which is arranged a metallic covering 2 secured to the member 1 by screws 3. To facilitate handling of the device, handles 1 are provided at the u per side thereof. The
V longitudinal edges 0 the 'metallic covering 2 project below the under side of the member 1 forming elongated flanges 5 which are adapted to sink into the nap of the rug illustrated at A in order to prevent creeping of the dye under said flanges or beyond the guide in the coloring or dye applying operation. In using the form of the device shown in Fig. 1, the same is laid upon the surface of the rug spaced from the edge thereof so as to serve as a means of marking the -inner edge of a border B which it is desired to form upon the rug. The border is formed by simply spraying an additional quantity of dye upon the surface of the rug in order to more deeply color the same, or, if desired a dye of a different color may be sprayed upon this portion of the rug in order to form a border of a difi'erent color. This operation is repeated along each edge of the rug until the border is completed. The
depending flanges 5 as mentioned serve to form a clear cut distinct inner edge for the border as above mentioned.
In the form of the device illustrated in Fig. 2 a guide or guard of ornamental design is provided comprising a metallic body 6 formed with depending flanges 7 adapted to serve the same function as the flanges 5 in the form of the device first described. In using the form of the device shown in Fig. 2 the same is laid upon the rug at the place desired and when placed upon the rug serves to shield a portion thereof and thus result in the formation of a design or pattern corresponding with that of the device, as shown at G, upon the spraying of the dye upon the unprotected portion of the rug. It is of course understood that this form of a device may be made in any design or pattern desired, the important consideration being that of the formation of the depending flanges'7 on any form of the device adopted for preventing creeping of the dye under the edges of the device.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of rug to shield the latter at the place where until the border is completed, substantially the pattern is to be formed; then spraying as described.
a dye over the entire upper side of the rug; In testimony whereof I have sighed my .then placing a guard on the upper side of name to this specification in the presence of 5. the rug spaced from the edge thereof along two SllbSCllbmg witnesses. Y
which the border is to be formed; then spraying additional dye upon the portion of WALTER L the rug between said member and the adja- Witnesses: cent edge of the rug; and then repeating the An A. OLSON,
10 latter operation along-each edgeof the rug JOBIHUA R, H, P,
