To all whom t may concer/n Be it known that I, JOSEPH PAIL, J r., a subject of the King of England, residing at Prague, Alberta, Canada, have invented a new and useful Shell, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to explosive shells or projectiles and has for its object the provision of a novel and improved triple action shell which can be used not only as shrapnel but also, as a grenade.
It is also within the scope of this invention to provide a very efficient shell, simple and inexpensive in construction.
With the foregoing and othervobjects in View which will be apparent from the illustrations and description, the present invention finds embodiment in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and members and in the details of constructionherein shown, described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
An illustration of my invention is found in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a shell constructed according to my invention; and
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross sections, taken respectively on lines 2 2 and 3-3 of Fig. `1.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the bomb in the lower or base chamber.
The shell comprises a cylindrical wall 5 cast with a partition or diaphragm 6 which isY dished or concave on both sides and provided with a small central opening lfor the short connecting fuse-tube 7 One end of the cylinder 5 is screw-connected with the head 8 which may have both time and percussion fuses whereby the shell may be set off or fired at a certain time or distarce from the projecting ordnance or shotas a grenade.
I have preferred to illustrate herein a time-fuse construction comprising a hammer 9 carrying a primer 10 which is forced by the set back to strike the point '11 of the anvil 12 and cause a flame to travel by the time-ring 13 and channel 14 to a highly eX- plosive charge 15 held within the head 8 by a disk 16.
The impact or percussion-fuse comprises a 1 rimer 17 held Within anvil 12 and adapted for detona'tion by the momentum of the pointed hammer 18, causing the igniting flame to pass through port 19 and passage 14 to ignite charge 15.
Before affixing the head 8 to cylinder 5 a charge-disk 20 of paper or other very thin and inflammable material filled with a high explosive, or charge and having oppositely bulging convex sides 20A, conforming to the curvature of the diaphragm and with flattened edges 20B, is placed on theA dished diaphragm 6 so lthat the projecting fuse-tube 7 perforates the charge-disk 2O to afford communication with a similar charge disk 21 on the other side of the diaphragm 6 in the base-chamber.
A castiron disk 22 is neXt placed on top of the charge-disk 20. This iron disk 22 has a curved side arranged to fit over the side 20A of theA charge-disk 20 and the flattened edges 20B against the diaphragm 6.
A thin tube 23 having a supporting shoulder 23A, containing'a quickly ignitible fuse, is neXt inserted into the small central opening of disk 22 to perfor-ate the charge disk 2O and rest shoulder 23A on top thereof.
vAfter the balls or shot 24A are filled in vscrew connection therewith, the 4complete bomb member 26 is inserted 'to confine the charge 21 in a similar manner to the disk I22 in the upper chamber.
The large balls or shot 24B are then filled in around same.
with an explosive 29 is secu rely held against the head by means of the screw 28 carrying a time fuse which acts to communicate the ignition from charge 21 to charge 29. The charge 27 being lled through the rear end which is provided with a screw connected back 27 A. A quantity of small balls or shot 30 are filled in between 'the charge 27 and interior of body 26B.
Several small pyramids, 26D, or the like may be cast on the exterior of the body 26B, to confine the bomb to a relatively central position within the base chamber.
After the shell is shot from the projecting piece of ordnance, the time fuse will phragm 6 and the disk 22 and bomb head '26A the two charges communicating through the ordinary opening` in the center of the diaphragm.
Likewise various other simple changes may be made in fthe construction of the vari- `ous members without departing from the spirit of my invention.
" I claim as my invention:
1. A triple action shell comprising a head chamber, a base chamber, an explosive *charge and shrapnel balls in each chamber and abomb in the base chamber, said bomb having an independent explosive charge in communication with the explosive charge of Athe basel chamber, said charges and bomb arranged for successive explosion.
2. A triple action shell comprising a head chamber, a base chamber, an explosive charge and shrapnel'balls in each chamber, and a bomb in said base chamber, said bomb having an independent explosive charge in communication Iwith theexplosive charge of the base chamber, said charges and Ybomb charge arranged for successive explosion `and said charges being adjacentand interconnected.
3. triple action shell comprising a cylindrical body having a diaphragm within dividing the interior into a head chamber and a base chamber, an opening in said diaohravm an ex ilosive charge on eachside of said diaphragm, said charges communicating through said opening, shrapnel balls in said chambers, a bomb in lsaid base chamber, said bomb having an independent ex plosive charge incommunication with the explosive charge of the base chamber, said charges and bomb arranged for successive explosion.

A triple .action shell comprising a cylindrical body, a diaphragm within said body dividing the interior thereof into head Vand Ybase chambers, an opening in said diaphragm, explosive charges on both sides of said diaphragm, said charges communicating through said opening, shrapnel balls inV said chambers, a bomb in said base chamber having an independent explosive charge directly communicating with said explosive charge in said base chamber, said charges and bomb arranged for successive explosion.
5. A triple action shell comprising a cylindrical body and a fuse-head therefor, a diaphragm within said body dividing the interior thereof into a head chamber and a Vbase chamber, said diaphragm having concave sides and a concentric opening therein,
yan explosive in each concave side, said "charges communicating through said opening, a convex disk forming a cover for said charge in the head chamber, shrapnelballs between said cover and fuse-head, a quicklyacting fuse connecting said use head with said charge in said head chamber, a bomb having a concave head adapted to house said charge 'in said base chamber, `an explosive charge in' said bomb communicatingvwith said charge in said base chamber, shrapnel balls on the exterior of said bomb in said base chamber, and shrapnel balls within r'said bomb, said charges in said chambers and charge in said bomb arranged for successive explosion.
6. A triple action shell comprising a cylindrical body and a fuse-head therefor, a diaphragm Within said body dividing the interior thereof into a head chamber and a base chamber, said diaphragm having concave sides and a concentric opening therein,
