Be it known that I, LEONARD J. BLADES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment or Ticket Drawers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to drawers for cabinets of any kind such as ticket cases and the like which are adapted to contain coupon railway tickets, and the object thereof is to provide a novel and eflicient drawer of this character containing several important and advantageous features of construction and having means for properly holding the contents such as tickets, labels and the like within their compartments and for accommodating articles of different lengths.

Referring to the particular embodiment of my invention as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, a ticket case drawer is here selected for the purposes of a description of my invention although the same is not limited to such particular embodiment. As shown the drawer comprises a frame of suitable material, preferably wood, consisting of two end rails and the two side-rails 2. In order to economize space a series or plurality of these drawers are adapted to slide upon each other and consequently the side-rails have means such as the groove 2 forming part of the sliding means in connection with a cooperating part on the case or frame (not shown). Each drawer is, in the present instance, provided with a plurality of ticket compartments formed by longitudinal partitions running parallel with the side-rails 2. In order that the partitions may be as narrow as possible, consistent with the required strength and in order to condense the structure, I prefer to make these partitions as well as the bottom of the compartments of sheet metal which is properly shaped for the purpose. In the particular embodiment of my invention now being described the compartments are formed of a series of longitudinal strips each shaped into channel form thereby providing a bottom portion 3 constituting the bottom of the compartment and the two similar vertical parallel sidewalls 4, the adjacent side-walls of two compartments forming a partition. The upper portions of the side-walls 4c are inwardly and downwardly turned and folded against the inner faces of suchwalls, such infolded portions being indicated at 5. The edges of these infolded portions terminate intermediate the height of the walls 4 thereby forming shoulders 5 on the inner walls of the compartments and serving the purpose hereinafter explained. These metallic strips are secured tothe drawer-frame in suitable manner and in the present instance I have shown the bottom portion 3 of each strip as secured to the under side of the end rails by the fastening devices 6, such as screws or nails and the ends of the partition walls as inserted in and retained by vertical grooves l in the inner faces of the end rails 11.

The compartments above described are adapted to contain the coupon tickets and are preferably of a length to hold the longest ticket of this character in its fiat form. In order to designate or mark the contents of the different compartments I secure to the upper surface of the front end rail 1 a metallic strip 7 whose opposite longitudinal edges 7 are inwardly and downwardly bent in order to form a slideway for the series of marking or indicating cards 8 on which the proper marking or indication for the tickets may be shown. As illustrated in Fig. 8 this indicating or marking means is located slightly below the top plane of the front end rail, the latter being recessed for this purpose.

Each of such holders consists of a metallic strip nearly the same length as the compartments and comprising two rightangled portions, the horizontal portion extending part way over its compartment,

thereby keeping the tickets down within the However in man instances the cou on tickets are not of a length to occupy the entire compartment and it frequently happens that some of the compartments contain full-length tickets and others tickets of other lengths. In order to accommodate this variation in ticket lengths it is desirable to provide a ticket holder which may be adjustable for diiferent lengths of ticket, such holder serving to hold down the rear end of the ticket. To this end I provide for each drawer one or more of the adjustable ticket holders indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4:. These holders are also by preference of sheet metal comprising a bottom portion 10, opposite upwardly extending side flanges 10, a vertical end portion or wall 10 rising from the bottom and a horizontal flange portion 10 extending partly over' the bot tom. This'holder slides upon the bottom of its compartment and the flanges 10 are normally outwardly turned or inclined so as to bear against the side-walls of the compartment with suflicient friction V to maintain the holder in place and also to engage underneath the shoulders 5 on' the inner opposite. faces of the side walls of the compartment whereby the holder is locked in place. The portion 10 of this form of holder overhangs the tickets within the compartment and keeps them down in place.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of holder comprising the flat horizontal strip, 11 and the two opposite flanges 11, the latter being arranged to have frictional contact with the side walls 4: of the compartments. In order to limit the adjustment or movement of the holder to a proper position in the rear end of the ticket Iprovide suitable means which as herein shown consists of the depending fingers 11 which by preference are made from the same material as the holder itself. It is also desirable to normally lock each of these "holders, now being described,- within its compartment so that while it" is adapted to slide longitudinally out of the compartment it is normally prevented from being removed therefrom or from rising upwardly beyond the top plane of its compartment which might cause interference with the sliding of the ticket drawers one upon the other. To this end I provide each of the flanges 11 of the holderwith one or more projections which are herein shown as tongues 11, located at such a height as to engage underneath the shoulders 5 of the compartments with the result that in the limited by the contact of the rear or bottom edge of the ticket with the limiting means 11.

In Fig. (5 I have shown another modification of adjustable holder which is adapted to be adjusted to a position intermedlate the length of a compartment and adapted tohold in place two sets of tickets in the same compartment, one set being in the forward portion of the compartment and the other set being in the rearward portion thereof. This holder is substantially the same as the holder shown in detail in Fig. 5 but is a double holder, comprising the horizontal portion 12, flange portions 12* and depending limiting tongues 12 which project downwardly intermediate the length of thehorizontal portion 12, with the result that the rearward end of one set of tickets will extend below the front end of the holder and the front end of the other set of tickets will extend below the rearward end of the holder.

In Fig. 7 I have shown a modified construction of the compartments according to which each compartment is made of a sheet metal strip comprising a bottom portion 13, two opposite vertical portions 1a and a reversely'bent portion 15, such latter portion forming a socket in which one of the'vertical portions of an adjacent compartment is interlocked. A series of these compartments so constructed and assei'nbled makes practic'ally an integral construction which may be secured to the drawer-frame in the same manner as the construction'of compartments before described. 7

As shown in detail in Fig. 3,1 prefer to provide under the strip 7 a dust strip 16 made of felt and the like and secured by the same means as said metal'strip 7. I claim:

1. The combination of a drawer having a compartment, and a holder slidable therein and comprising a forwardlyextending overhanging strip adapted to hold the articles down within the compartment and side flanges adapted to bear against the side of the compartment.

2. The combination of a drawer having a compartment provided with shoulders along its sides, and a holder slidable therein and comprising a strip having along the opposite edges of its bottom upwardlybent side flanges adapted to engage under said shoulders whereby the holder is normally locked against disengagement and adapted to slide within the compartment.

3. The combination of a drawer having a compartment, and a holder slidable therein and comprising a bottom having opposite upturned flanges bearing against opposite Walls of said compartment, an end wall rising from said bottom and a flange on the end wall extending over said bottom.

4. The combination of a drawer having a compartment provided with a horizontal shoulder on the inner face of its side walls, and a holder slidable therein and comprising a bottom having opposite upturned and normally outwardly flared flanges bearing against said walls and engaging under said shoulders, an end wall rising from said bottom and a flange thereon extending over said bottom.
