Description

S. ABRAMSON.
PORTABLE FIRE ESCAPE.
APPLICATIONFILED JULY 15.19%
Patentd June 12, 1917.
SAMUEL ABRAMSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE FIRE-ESCAPE.
Original application filed June 8, 1916, Serial No. 102,411.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 191?.
Divided and this application filed. July 15, 1916.
Serial No. 109,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ABRAMSON, a subject of the Czar of Russia, but who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and residing now at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of- Philadephia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is a division of an application (Serial No. 102,411) filed by me under date of June 8th, 1916.
My present invention relates to a portable fire-escape adapted to be slid along a Wire or other type of rope and controlled in descent by friction induced through the operation of hand-grips operating to control the rapidity of descent and in such connection it relates particularly to the structural arrangement of such a fire-escape.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my said invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof; in which V Figure 1 is an end view of the fireescape, embodying the essential main features of my invention in a condition for use, shown with the hand-grips for regulating the safe descent by the fire-escape from a structure.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in vertical section and partly in elevation of the fire-escape of Fig. 1, showing the manner of positively locking the two pivotal pulleys of the fireescape, so that in the one instance the rope can slide around the said pulleys and in the other travel with the pulleys in their respective revolving movements.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of said fire-escape.
Referring to the drawings, the fire-escape A, is provided with two countersunk surfaced and grooved face pivoted pulleys a and 64 in position in the housing a, of the fire-escape located at opposite corners of the said housing. The corners opposite the location of the said pulleys are provided with grooved face formations a and a arranged integral with one section or part of the said housing a. The two exterior parts of the housing are arranged with grip-bars a and a, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 8. Pivote'd to the said bars are handle-bars a? and a and these extend into the housing a, and form therein clutch-members a and a A rope 5, passes circuitously .in coursing through said housing in contact with the respective grooved formations a and a, between the clutch-members a and a, and around the pivoted pulleys a and a The housing a, has depending therefrom body loops 0 and 0 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Each of these loops is provided with a slip-ring 0 whereby the said loops may be fitted under the arm-pits of the person, for safe descent.
The pulleys a and a are each provided with rows of openings therein Fig. 2, and into which enter tightening bolts on and a, Fig. 4, to control the degree of revolving movement of said pulleys by a rope b, passing around the same. The said tightening means when entering one of said openings instantly fixes the pulley even when the rope slides around the. same, while when the tightening means are freed from engagement with one of the openings of the pulleys they can freely revolve. This provides a desirable arrangement to permit of quick and effective regulation according to the weight of the person suspended from a body loop 0 or c for descent along the fireescape. is to descend the pulleys should operate freely, while if a grown person they operate less freely and this is regulated by manipulating the said tightening means a and a, of the said pulleys a and (L in the manner above explained and as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4E. The foregoing arrangement of the fire-escape is such as that several persons at a time can descend suspended therefrom, that is, one on each side, gripping the fixed and movable handle-bars and another swung or carried by such person as will be apparent, is possible, from Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fire-escape, comprising a housing provided with corner, grooved formations, opposite corner, grooved pulleys, 'handlebars formed with said housing and handle bars pivoted thereto and extending into For instance, if it is a child that said housing and forming clutches to engage a rope coursing through said housing in contact With said formations and pulleys.
2. A fire-escape, comprising a housing having grooved corner formations opposite each other, corner grooved revoluble pulleys having openings to engage tightening means of the housing, handle-bars formed integral 1 with said housing and handlebars pivoted to said fixed-bars and extending into said housing to form clutches to engage a rope Copies of this patent may be obtained for; five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,-
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 5 my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
SAMUEL ABRAMSON.
