Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I/VIN D. humans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tool holders and more particularly to that type designed for use in connection with planing machines, lathes, and in fact, any type of metal working machine in which a cutting or similar tool is employed. Ordinarily, tool holders are constructed in sections which are to be clamped together so as to firmly bind the disadvantage that the sections are liable to be lost or misplaced and considerable time and trouble is required in separating the sections, assembling the sections, and obtaining the desired clamping adjustment thereof on the tool. Another disadvantage presented by tool holders of the ordinary type is that the clamping adjustment is liable to be lost or disturbed while the machine is in operation and the tool is, therefore, liable to slip. The present invention therefore aims to provide a tool holder having integrally connected spaced portions between which the tool is tobe received and to provide means whereby these portions may be adjusted toward each other whereby to firmly and positively clamp the tool, the means being also adjustable to slightly separate the said portions so as to permit of readyremoval of the tool or fitting of the tool between the said portions. Incidentally, the invention aims to provide an adjusting means which will not be liable to become disarranged in the operation of the machine in connection with which the tool holder is employed and which will be permanently assembled with the clamping portions so that the tool may be assembled with the holder and removed therefrom without the necessity of entirely separating any part of the holder from the other parts thereof and there is, therefore, no likelihood of any part becoming'lost.
Another aim of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement of channels for receiving the tool to be held, the channels being so formed that that one of the spaced portions in which they are formed will not be materially weakened by reason of their presence and incidentally the invention aims to so relatively arrange the channels that the tool may be fitted within the holder for right or left hand work.

The tool holder embodying the present invention includes a shank which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and which at its forward end is formed with upper and lower relatively spaced portions indicated respectively by the numerals 2 and 3, these portions having opposing faces 4 and 5 respectively which faces occupy parallel planes and constitute the clamping faces of the holder. The face 5 of the portion 3 is formed with diagonal channels 6 and 7 and these channels intersect each other substantially at a point midway between the ends of the said face, each of the channels having itswalls vertically disposed and parallel to each other. The face 4 of the portion 2 is plane and is parallel to the bottom walls of the channels 6 and 7 and the channels are of a width to receive the tool to be held which tool is indicated by the numeral 8 and may be of any character usually employed in a tool holder of this class and the bottom walls of the channels are spaced below the face I of the portion 2 such distance as to permit of ready and yet snug insertion of the tool into either channel and between the bottom walls of the channels and the end face 4 of the portion 2. It will be understood that when the tool is disposed within the channel 6, it is adapted for right hand work and when disposed within the channel 7 it is adapted for left hand work.
As heretofore stated, means is provided whereby the spaced portions may be drawn toward each other so as to firmly clamp the tool in place, this means being also capable of manipulation to relatively separate the said portions and thereby permit of ready insertion and removal of the tool. In order that the adjustment above referred to may be obtained, the portion 3 is formed with a threaded opening 9 located substantially at its end and in the angle between the forward ends of the channels 6 and 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The portion 2 is formed, in axial alinement with the opening 9, with an opening 10 having a cylindrical wall and fitted through the opening 10 is a bolt 11, the shank of which, at its lower end, is threaded as at 12 to fit within the opening 9. At its upper end, the shank is squared as at 13v for theapplication of any ordinary Wrench whereby the bolt may be rotated for the purpose of securing the adjustment referred to, the shank of the bolt being provided at the lower end of its squared portion 13 with a circular head 14 designed to bear against the upper face of the portion 2 in the manner clearly shown in Fig, 2 of the drawings. In its portion which fits rotatably within the opening 10, the shank of the bolt is provided with a circumscribing substantially semi cylindrical groove 15 and a cylindrical pin 16 is fitted transversely through the portion 2 of the holder and at one side seats Within the said groove 15, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4: of the drawings. From the foregoing description, it will be understood that when the tool 8 has been fitted into one or the other of the channels provided for its reception, a wrench may be applied to the squared end 13 of the bolt and the bolt may be threaded down so as to draw the portion, 2 in the direction of the portion 3, thereby causing the opposing faces of the said portions to firmly clamp the tool in place, the tool being, of course, held against lateral displacement through engagement with the side walls of the channels. When it is desired to remove the tool or adjust the same longitudinally within the channel in which it is seated, the bolt may be rotated in a direction the reverse of that above stated and inasmuch as it is held against upward movement through the opening 10 through the engagement of the pin 1-6 in the groove 15, the portion 2 will be moved a short distance away from the portion 3 thereby releasing the tool. It' will be apparent that the bolt 11 which is the means for relatively adjusting the clamping members or portions is permanently assembled with the said portions and therefore is not liable to become lost. It will also be understood that but very slight relative movement of the portion 2 with relation to the portion 3. is required in either clamping or releasing the tool and that, therefore, the desired adjustment may be secured in a moment.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1., A tool holder having spaced portions, the opposing faces of T which constitute a smooth tool clamping faces, one ofsaid faces having diagonal tool receiving channels intersecting intermediate their ends, and a clamping bolt fitted through the spaced portions in the angle between the outer ends of the said channels and adjustable to draw the spaced portions into clamping engagement with a tool disposed in either channel.
2. A tool holder having spaced portions the opposing faces of which constitute tool clamping faces, vone of said faces having diagonal intersecting tool receiving channels, a clamping bolt rotatably fitted through one of the said portions and otherwise held against movement relative thereto, the said bolt, being adj ustably threaded into the other said portion.
3. A tool holder having spaced portions the opposing faces of which constitute tool clamping faces, one of said portions having a threaded opening and the other portion having a cylindrical opening, a clamping bolt rotatably fitted within the opening in the second mentioned portion and adjustably threaded into the opening in the first mentioned portion, and means coacting with the bolt and with the second mentioned portion for preventing longitudinal movement of the cumscribing groove formed in its portion which occupies the opening in the second mentioned spaced portion, and a pin fitted through the second mentioned spaced portion and seating in said groove.
5. A tool holder having spaced portions the opposing faces of which constitute tool clamping faces, one of said portions having a threaded opening and the other portion having a cylindrical opening, a clamping bolt rotatably fitted in the opening in the second mentioned portion and adjustably threaded into the opening in the first mentioned; portion, the said bolt having a circumscribing groove formed in its portion which occupies the opening in the second mentioned spaced portion, and a pin fitted through the second mentioned spaced portion and seating in said groove, the bolt being provided with a head bearing against the outer face of the second mentioned portion.
