Be it known that we, Gnovnn C. LENTS and JosErn LEE BEST, citizens of the United States, residing at Turrell, in the countyof Crittenden and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sanitary Bins for Grocers, &c.; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to an automatic sanitary bin for grocers and others.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bins and to provide a simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive bin of strong and durable construction designed for use of grocers and others and equipped with an automatically actuated cover or lid operated through the tilting movement of the bin and adapted to open when the bin is tilted or drawn outwardly to obtain access to its contents and capable of closing when the bin is moved inwardly and returned to its normal or initial position.

A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic bin of this character on which the lid or cover will fit perfectly and exclude dust, flies, and other insects whereby the contents of the bin will be maintained in a perfectly sanitary condition.

It is also'the object of the invention to provide an automatic sanitary bin which may be readily removed for dumping out the last of its contents and for cleaning or otherwise operating on or using it.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a tiltingbin or receptacle designed to be constructed of sheet metal or any other suitable material and preferably tapered as shown and provided at the bottom at opposite sides with depending ears 2 having open bearing recesses 3 and seated upon a horizontally arranged transvcrsely disposed pintle rod 4:, mounted in a front frame 5. The tiltable bin or receptacle is adapted to swing outwardly or forwardly to carry the center of gravity beyond the vertical plane of the pintle rod whereby the bin will remain in an open position.

lVhen the bin is swung inwardly or rearwardly the center of gravity of it is carried in rear of the vertical plane of the pintle rod so that the bin will remain in its closed position. The bin is provided at the upper edges of its side walls with outwardly extending flanges 6 and a cover 7 which is provided at its opposite edges with depending inwardly extending flanges 7 is slidably interlocked with the side walls of the bin, the flanges '7 forming grooves or ways to receive the laterally projecting flanges 6. The lid or cover is held against outward movement by means hereinafter described and is permitted the pivotal or swinging upward and downward movement suificiently to permit the bin to move outwardly and inwardly. The slidable interlocking of the lid or cover of the bin or receptacle renders the latter dust proof and excludes flies, roaches and other insects.

The front frame comprises a transversely disposed base or bottom plate 21 and inclined upwardly and rearwardly extending side braces 9 which are formed integral with enlarged upturned terminal portions 10 of the base or bottom plate. Theenlarged upturned terminal portions 10 of the base or bottom plate are provided with perforations in which the pintle rod is secured. The in clined braces are provided at their upper ends with eyes 11 through which pass pintles 12 which secure the braces to standards 13 of a rear frame 14 and which also hinge the rear ends of a pair of link bars 15 to the upper ends of the standards. The standards 13 are provided at their upper ends with eyes 16 which are spaced apart to receive eyes 17 of the rear ends of the link bars 15 and the said link bars are provided at their front ends with eyes 18 which are hinged by removable pins or keys 19 to ears or eyes 20 of the lid or cover. The standards 13 are rigidly connected at their lower ends with a base or bottom plate 14 located in rear of the base or bottom plate 21 of the front frame. The front and rear frames are designed to be secured to the floor 8 or other supporting surface and the bin may be arranged beneath a counter, under shelves or any other convenient location and when it is tilted it will be automatically opened and closed.

In order to relieve the cover of the weight of the bin and its contents the inner or rear wall of the bin is provided with a project, ing lug 22 having an opening 23 through which passes a rod 24 pivotally connected at its lower end to the base or bottom plate 14 and provided at its upper portion with spaced stops located above and below the lug 22 and adapted to engage the same when the bin is at the limit of its inward and outward movement. The stops are preferably in the form of nuts 25 and 26 which are arranged on a threaded portion 27 of the rod 24 and the latter is provided at its lower end with an eye 25 which is linked into an eye 26 of the base or bottom plate of the rear frame. When the bin swings forwardly or outwardly the lug 22 which may be formed integral with an attaching plate 28 engages the upper nut and when the bin is swung inwardly the lug is carried into ongagement with the lower nut. This construction relieves the slidable cover of the weight of the contents of the bin and the weight of the latter so that the slidable connection between the lid or cover and the said bin or receptacle will not be strained or otherwise injured. By removing the pins or keys 19 and the upper nut the bin may be readily lifted from the pintle rod so that the last of the contents can be easily dumped out and the bin cleaned.

What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described including a tiltable bin pivotally mounted at the bottom and arranged to swing inwardly and outwardly, a cover slidably interlocked with the bin at the top thereof, movable means connected with the lid or cover for holding the same against inward and outward movement, and adjustable means connected with the bin for supporting the same at the limit of its inward and outward movement to relieve the lid or cover of the weight of the bin and contents and also to limit the opening movement of the bin.

2. A device of the class described including a tiltable bin pivotally mounted at the bottom and arranged to swing inwardly and outwardly, a cover slidably interlocked with the bin at the top thereof, movable means connected with the lid or cover for holding the same against inward and outward movement, a rod located in rear of the bin and having a hinged connection at its lower end and slidably connected at its upper portion with the bin and provided with spaced stops for limiting the inward and outward movement of the bin, whereby the lid or cover is relieved of strain.

3. A device of the class described including a rear frame having a base and spaced standards, a front frame comprising a base, and inclined bracing bars extending from the base of the front frame to the upper portions of the said standards, a horizontal gintle rod carried by the front frame, a bin pivotally mounted on the said pintle rod and arranged to swing inwardly and outwardly, a lid or cover for the bin and link bars pivotally connected with the lid or cover and with the standards and a rod hinged to the base of the rear frame and slidably connect ed with the bin and having spaced stops for limiting the inward and outward movement of the said bin.

4. A device of the class described including a rear frame having a base and provided with spaced standards having eyes at their upper ends, a front frame composed of a base and side bars extending from the base of the front frame to the upper end of the said standards and provided with eyes registering with the said eyes, pintles arranged in the said eyes, a tiltable bin pivotally mounted on the base of the front frame, a cover slidably interlocked with the bin at the top thereof, bars hinged to the cover and connected with the standards by the said pintle and means for limiting the inward and outward movement of the bin.
