Be it known that I, RALPH G. IVrnrnomq a citizen of the'UnitedStates, residing at the city of LosAngeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California,- have invented new and useful Improvements in- Loose-Leaf Books,- of'whi'ch the followingis a speclfication.
My invention relates to a book consisting of a cover and means secured thereto for securing loose leaves therein, andthe object thereof is to Pl'OVlClQ 'IHIPI'OVGCland simple means for removably securing the leaves in 1 place Within the cover whlch will also permit portions of the back frame'by stamping the parts from sheet metal.

Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away of a cover with my back frame in place.
Fig. 2 is a section on the=line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. *3 is an enlargedend elevationof the back frame viewed from the opening lever end showing the back frame locked open.
Fig. 4 is a like vieW to Fig. 3, showing the back frame closed and locked.
Figs. 5 and 6 are side elevations of parts of the back frame and the opening .and looking lcver'in the open and closed positions.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a sheet metal blank before it is formed into a back frame.

In the drawings in Figs. '1 to 6 inclusive the back frame is shown as constructed of wire suitably formed. In the other figures the back frame is shown as constructed of sheet metal suitably formed.
Referring to the drawings as shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 15 and 16 are the side members of the back frame and are preferably made of heavy wire the ends of which are turned at right angles to the body and hingedly connected by rod 17. At suitable distances alongthe body members and secured thereto are what maybe termed deformed ring members which are composed of thebody portions 18 whichare out 'on a lme opposite rod--17 ,=and form segments of a 'C1l'ClG5 and the shank members 19.
These ringmembers are connected to the body members at the unction of thebody portions with the shanks. The shanks project upwardly and inwardly and'the shanks of each ofthen'ing-members are hingedly connectedby rod 17, Wh1Cl1,.Wl1I1 the ring members are in their closed position lies a, little above the-planethatpasses across theupper surfaces of the-body members. Near one end of rod 17 and rigidly secured thereto is a transverse or fulcrum bar 20on which 7 baris pivotally mountedan L-sha'ped leverby means of which the body members of the back frameare caused to approach each other whereby the ring members are opened.
This L-shaped lever I term anopenin-g lever 'andis composed of shanks 21, which are pivotally connected to the fulcrum bar and the body member 22 lying at right angles to the shank members. The shanks are separated' and a portion of the body member 22 is cut away so as to permit it to passover the end of rod-l7 when the ring members are opened.
Secured to shanks 21 is a locking lug 23 which passes between lugs 24 and 25 on body members 15 and- 16. r Lockingnlugi23 -may be formed integral with the opening lever. l/Vhen the ring members are in their closed position shanks 21 lie in a planeparallel with the plane of the body members of the back frame and when the ring members are opened they lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the body members of the back frame. Normally the ring members are in closed positions. By pressing on the top of the opening lever its shanks press against the body members of the back frame and force them toward each other thereby opening the ring members. In order to make a better attachment between the members of the back frame and the cover than has been heretofore possible I revolubly mount on the side members. of the back frame strips 25 of thin sheet metal, in which are rows of perforations 26 preferably placed along the edges thereof. The lining 27 of the cover is glued to the inner side of the strip and the outside member 28 of the cover is glued to the outer side of this strip. The glue will fill the perforations in strip 25 and thereby forms, as it were, rivets from the lining to the outer member of the cover and passing through the perforations in strips 25. Strips 25 constitute hinge members for connecting the cover to the back frame. In order to close the ring members after being opened I provide springs 29 the ends of which are connected to the side members of the back frame and the center is coiled around rod 17. These springs are preferably placed at the ring members nearest the ends of bar 17 and as the closing lever is returned to its normal position, which is the position shown in Fig. 6, return the members of the back frame to their normal position thus closing the ring members.
Fig. '7 shows a back frame and ring member blank being a piece of sheet metal stamped to be formed into a back frame With ring members integral therewith.
Figs. 8, 9 and 10 show the blanks formed up into a back frame comprising members 30 and 31 and ring members having shanks 32 and body portions 33. A rod 34, being the same as rod 17 connects the parts. The ring members are integral with the back frame in this construction.
- Having described my invention What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described,
a back frame composed of parallel side members having ends bent inwardly; a rod pass ing through said bent ends and hingedly connecting them; ring members connected to said side members; said ring members connecting the ends of the side members;
coiled around said rod and having'their ends bent around the side members; a fulcrum bar mounted on said rod; and an L-shaped opening lever pivotally mounted on said fulcrum bar.
3. In a device of the character described herein, the combination of a back frame having parallel side members hingedly connected by a rod extending from end to end and ring members mounted on the side members; With an L-shaped lever pivotally connected to said rod and adapted to be rocked so as to force the side members toward each other, and thereby open the ring members.
4. In a device of the character described, a metal back frame composed of side members hingedly connected; and ring members secured to said side members, said ring members being hingedly connected in pairs with the centers of the hinges lying above the plane of the centers of the side members.
