To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN T. SHUL'rs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at McCammon, in the county of Bannock and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, ofwhich the following, is a specification, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wire stretchers; and it isan object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character of a lever type and wherein the wire to be stretched is efiectively clamped to the stretcher. i
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel andimproved device of this general character including two relatively movable clamping jaws together with'means to prevent lateral separation of the jaws.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved Wire stretcher wherein the same may be efled' tively employed for other work in connedtion with wire work and particularly fence making. a The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my im-' proved wire stretcher whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all-as Wlll be hereinafter mor fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. a
In order that my invention may be the better understood, T will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a Wire stretcher constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

In the embodiment of my invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 9, 1 denotes'an elongated member, of predetermined dimensions and which has a side face at one end portion beveled, as indicated at 2, and adapted to coact With a correspondingly beveled portion 3 produced on the adjacent face of the arm 4. The member 1 and arm 4 are pivotally connected, as at 5, rearwardly of and immediately adjacent the beveled faces 2 and 3, whereby it *will be perceived that-said faces or beveled portions- 2 and 3 serve as clamping jaws to hold therebetween the end portion of a wire strand or the like to bestretched and for which reason saidfaces or beveled portions 2 and .3 are serrated as is thought to be clearly shown in detail Figs. 3, 1-and 8.
One of the beveled faces or portions, preferably 3, is provided with the open-end slot or groove 6' disposed substantially perpendicular tothe longitudinal axis of the arm 4 and which receives the portion of the wire strand or the like to be stretched so that during the stretching operation the possibility of the device twisting is substantially eliminated'.
The member 1 is also provided with an angular arm or extension 7 adapted to overlie the outer face of the adjacent portion of the arm 4t so that the jaws aii'orded by the faces 2 and 3 are held against lateral sepaa rating movement so that an effective grip upon the strand to be stretched is assured and for which reason said arm or extension jaw or beveled face 2, as is particularly illustrated in detail in Fig. 3.
' .The lower or outer end of the arm or extension 7 is curved outwardly, as at 8, to afford a claw adapted to coact with the curved claw 9 carried by the adjacent face of the member 1 and which claws 8 and 9 serve as a medium to engage a staple or the like when it is desired to withdraw or extract the same. The portion of the arm 4 in advance of the jaw or bevel face 3 is provided with the extension 10 disposed longitudinally on an outward curve and which terminates in a head or claw 11. The extension 10'is adapted to be engaged with a fence post or other support so that the device will fulcrum about said post or other support during a stretching operation, it being understood that the pull is imposed upon the member 1 and in a direction toward the arm 4 so that the possibility of the strand to be stretched pulling from between the jaws 2 and 3 is prevented.
The claw 11 is also adapted to be employed in the withdrawing or extracting of a staple or for any other purpose which may be necessary. It is also to be noted that the outer end portion of the member 1 is formed 1nto a cutting edge, as indicated at 12, so
that the same may be used in removing bumps, knots, rotten wood, or any obstacles that may make stapling difficult or may be used for any purpose desired.
The member 1 and the arm 4 at points adjacent the jaws 2 and 3 thereof and in advance of the pivotal connection 5, are provided with the cutting members 14 adapted to coact when the member 1 and arm 4 are separated or moved one away from the other to cut wire or other strands, while said member land arm 4 at the opposite side of the plvotal connection 5 are provided with the cutting edges 15 adapted to effect a severing operation when said member 1 and arm 4 are moved one toward the other.
As is particularly set forth in Fig. 1, it is Y to be observed that the opposed faces of the member 1 and arm 4 outwardly of and immediately adjacent the cutting edges 15 are flat, as at 18, and adapted to coact during a w1re splicing operation or for any other he form of invention illustrated in Figs. 10 to 12, 1 denotes an elongated member and 4* an arm pivotally connected, asat 5, and which are provided with the coactto be stretched is adapted to be clamped, and
said arm 1 is provided with the angular extension or arm 7 coacting with the member 4 for the same purposes as has hereinbefore been set forth relative to the angular arm 7.
The member 1 and arm 4 at portions adjacent the pivotal connection 5 opposite to the jaws or beveled faces 16 are .provided with the cutting edges 17 adapted to coact to cut a wire or for other severing purposes.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a wire stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change,
and modification without material departure from the principlesand spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A. wire stretcher comprising two crossed members pivotally connected one to the other, adjacent portions of said members being provided with coacting beveled faces "to afford clamping jaws, one of said members being provided in its beveled portion with an open end groove.
2. A wire stretcher comprising two crossed members pivotally connected one to the other, adjacent portions of said members being provided with coacting beveled faces to afford clamping jaws, one of said members being provided with a transversely and inwardly directed extension coacting with the second member for preventing lateral separation of said members.
3. A wire stretcher comprising two crossed members pivotally connected one to the other, adjacent portions of said members bein provided with coacting beveled faces to a 0rd clamping jaws, one of said members being provided in'its beveled portion with a transversely disposed groove.
