CONNECTING DEVICE.
Speeicaton of Letters Eatent.
Patented May 29, 1917.
Application filed May 14, 1915. Serial No. 28,146.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Louis S. STOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smithland, in the county of llfoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Connecting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in connecting devices for harness blankets and for other purposes.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a connecting device whereby the use of buckles and the like will be eliminated and whereby the ends of a strap, trace, blanket or the like may be securely and effectively connected together and quickly and conveniently disconnected when desired.
It is further my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability, which may be manufactured and marketed at small cost, and which may be quickly and conveniently operated.
With the above recited objects in view, and others of a like nature, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompany drawing Figure 1 is a collective view showing the parts of my device in perspective.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the device showing the sections connected.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the connector.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the modified construction showing the sections connected.
Referring now to the drawing in detail 1 and 2 designate the male and female sections, respectively, of my improved connecting device. The male section 1 embodies clamping plates 3 adapted to be disposed upon the opposite sides of the strap, blanket or other article and secured thereto by means of rivets 4 passed through the plates and the article. Suitably secured to the outer ends of the plates 3 and projecting outwardly therefrom is a plug 5 shaped after the fashion of an arrow head and having the edges thereof tapering toward the outer end as at 6 and the sides thereof cut out as at 7 adjacent to the inner end of the plug and.
forming abrupt shoulders 8. The female member 2 comprises clamping plates i) disposed upon the opposite sides of the strap or other article and secured thereto by means of rivets 10 or other fastening devices. The outer ends of the plates 9 are spaced apart and constitute jaws 11 and the side edges of one of the jaws 11 are inturned as at 12 to close the sides of the space between the jaws, while the respective jaws are formed with alining openings 13 substantially rectangular in contour.
When it is desired to assemble the sect-ions 1 and 2 of the connector in connective formation, the plug 5 is introduced int-o the space between the jaws 11 and the sides of the plugs separate the jaws and as soon as the shoulders 8 enter the openings` 13, the jaws 11 spring back into normal position and the outer walls of the openings 13 engage behind the shoulders 8 thereby locking the sections against separation. The sides of the plug 5 beyond the shoulders 8 taper from the outer end of the plug toward the shoulders so that the jaws may spring back to normal position when the outer ends thereof are relieved of the inuence of the tapering sides of the plug.
In the modied form of the invention the male member is identical in construction to the member 1 shown in the preferred form, but the female member is formed of a single strip of metal 14 bent upon itself centrally of its ends as at 15 and forming, at the bent portion, a loop 16 adapted to receive a connecting link whereby the female member may be secured to the strap or other article. The confronting faces of the bent portions of the metal 14, at the outer ends thereof, are formed to provide recesses 17 and are adapted to receive the plug 5 of the male member, the outer end walls of the recesses engaging behind the shoulders. The outer extremity 0f the limbs of the metal 14 are formed to provide a tapering entrance mouth 18 whereby the plug of the male member may be readily inserted in the female member.
When it is desired to separate the sections the male member is turned slightly relatively to the female member and in the turning of the male member the jaws of the female member are separated and engage the tapering edges 6 of the male member thereby enabling the latter to be readily withdrawn from the female member.
'Vhat is claimed is In a device of the kind described in coinbination a socket member formed with ya pair of clamping yieldable plates arranged in Yparallel relation, said plates being formed with registering openings, and a latch inember consisting of a shank` and a head formed integrally upon said shank, Said head having its top and bottom 'faces and its side edges tapering and said top and bottom faces forming shoulders with said shank, said head being of such a length that when inserted between said plates with its Shoul- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ders engaged against the outer edge of said openings, the opposite end of said head will proj ect beyond the inner edges of said openings between the plates whereby when said head is turned between said plates the latter may be spread apart to disengage said shoulders.
