Specification of Letters Patent. Paltentfl 29, 1917.
Application filed February 27, 1917. Serial No. 151,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOY L. SHOCKLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Door-Operators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in dooroperators, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified especially adapted for barn and garage doors, wherein means is provided for counter-balancing the door, to permit it to be moved vertically with a minimum of effort.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the door 1 is mounted for vertical movement in guides 2, and flexible members 3, as, for instance, cords or cables are connected at one end with clips 1 on the door and at the top thereof.
These cords or cables 3 pass upwardly through openings in a crossbar 5 at the tops 7 of the guides 2, and over pulleys 6, which are journaled in bearing brackets on the crossbar. The cords pass from the pulleys 6 over a double pulley 7, which is journaled in a bearing bracket 8 on the extended end of the crossbar, and the said cords pass downward through the pulley 7 to a connection with one end of a double eye-bolt 9.
This eye-bolt has arranged transversely thereof at the lower eyea late 10, and above the plate and encircling t e bolt is mounted a series of weights 11, constituting a counter poise for the door, and this counter poise is arranged to exactly balance the door. The ends of the plate 10 have openings/through which pass rods 12, the said rods bein connected at their upper ends to the cross ar 5, and at their lower ends to a bracket plate 13 which extends laterally from the adjacent guide 2. Thus the rods guide the counter poise in its vertical movement, and constrain it to follow a definite course.
A cord or cable 14 is connected with the lower end of the eye-bolt, and the said cord passes downwardly through an opening in the bracket plate 13 and beneath a pulley 15, journaled on a bearing bracket 16 atthe bottom of the guide 2, and thence upwardly and over the pulley 7 to a connection with the eye-bolt 9. When it is desired to open the door, the cord or cable ll-is grasped at that run remote from the door, and the said cord or cable is pulled downward to lift the door. In order to close the door the other run is grasped.
Mechanism is provided for. permitting the door to be opened from another room, as, for
the oiiice. It will be obvious that when this run of cord or cable is pulled the door will be opened or closed, depending upon the direction of movement of the said run.
With the improved doorhanger, there are no rollers or track for rollers to jump from, and the door cannot stick as may the rolling door. Since the door is counterbalanced it moves without eifort.
I claim:
In combination with the door and the vertical guides in which the door moves, of a support above the door, flexible members connected with the door and near the ends thereof, pulleys on the support over which the flexible members pass, said support being extendedat one end of the door and carrying a double pulley, said flexible members passing over the double pulley, a counterweight connected with the ends of'the flexible members, means for guiding the counterweight, a pulley ournaled at the bottom of the door below the last named pulley, a flexible member connected with each end of the counterweight and passing over the last named pulleys for operating the door, another flexible member having its ends connected with the opposite ends of the counterweight, and direction elements arranged in pairs in the form of a parallelogram over which the said flexible member passes, one pair of said direction elements being arranged at a distance from the door to permit the door being operated from a distance.
