To all 'whom it may concern:

Be 1t knownthat I, HARRY A. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and' useful `Improvements in Folding Stands, of which the following is a specication.

` This invention relates to folding stands. My object is toprovide improvements on the folding table or stand set forth in my application iiledMarch28, 1913, Serial No.

,The invention has for an object the elim-` ination of certain of the so-called external braces of `theconstruction set forth in Serial No; 757310 and to provide means, preferably an improved'screwclamp, for fastening together the heads `of the inner or iny ternal braces when the stand is to be extended for use.

My improvements simplify the construction, cheapen `and strengthen it, and render it lighter, strongeriand more durable, besides affording greater rigidity to the relatively bodily movable legs.

yAs with ,the` invention set forth in my aforesaid, application Serial No. 7 57310,-the

bodily rmovable legs enablea table top to be entirely dispensed with, as these legs directly support theftypewriter or other object, and `the latter when thus supported serves asa table top and brace for the s ai` foldable, bodily movablelegs.

As with the construction set forth in my co-pending application Serial No. 757310, so withthe present invention, I preferably couple sets of crossed internal braces, each composed of a pair of members, the pairs offbraces of one set straddling those of the other set and thus these braces interbrace` `each other.

Preferably, the clamp consists of a hand-screw rotatably carried by a head to which `one set of the braces is pivoted and adapted to engage screw-threads in the head to which the other set of braces is con# nected, but I am aware that changes in construction may be resorted to in the form of the clamp, and I do not limit myself to the details of the screw clamp, except where set forth in the claims.

The legs 1 may be of anyusualror preferred construction, but are preferably made in telescopic sections, and in ythe nature of a tripod, but no table top is provided,'and the object, suchas a typewriter, is directly supported on the upper ends of the legs bythe insertion of the typewriter feet in the cups 2 on two of the "legsand the engagement of the front vof 4the typewriter frame by` the clamp hook 3 which is pivotally mounted at Llso that itlmay be readily folded,;as shown `inFig. `2. When thus supported, the typewriter or other object flange `9 holds the yjointagainst breaking f downwardly.

In the lconstruction set: forth in my application Serial No: 757 310, there are also upper braces corresponding to the lower braces 5, but in the present construction` these are unnecessary, as the improved clamp shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 causes a rigid bracing of the upper parts of the legs. I may, however if I desire to do so, employ upper external braces similar to the lower braces 5 as pro-A vided in the table or stand set forth in my application Serial No. 7 57310 and I do not f limit myself to either dispense with or provide such braces. n y

The heads 7 are provided with inwardly projecting lugs or ears 10. Pairs of upper internal, flat braces 11 are pivoted to the upper lugs or ears 10 at 12 and converge ,downwardly and are pivoted at 13 to` the lugs or ears 14 on a head 15.

Lower braces 16 which are arranged in pairs and are straddled by the bracesy 11 and are in contact therewith so as to form an interbrace, are pivoted at 17 to the lower lugs 10 and at 18 to the lugs 19 of an upper head 20, the lower braces 16 thus crosslng the upper braces 11 and converging upwardly, while the upper braces 11 converge downwardly.

The upper head 2O is provided with a. smooth aperture or bore 21 (Fig. 5) and the lower head 15 has a screw-threaded bore or aperture 22 in alinement with the bore 21, but of larger internal diameter. Journaled in the bore 21 is the blank or cylindrical portion 23 of the clamping screw which isv provided with a hand-Wheel 24 which may be suitably secured thereto as by apin 25. A shoulder 26 on the clamping screw bears against the upper face of the head 21. Below the head 21 the screw has screw-threads 27 which are larger than the bore 21 and are adapted to engage the screw-threads22. If made larger-than the bore 21,- the screwthreads 27 prevent the screw from pulling out of the bore in an upward direction, while the shoulder 26 preventspulling out in a. downward direction. I do not limit myself, except where stated in the claims, to a screwthreaded part which is of greater diameter than the bore 21 as the same result could be whereupon, on turning the hand-wheel 24,

the screw-threads 27 engage the screw- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for threads 22 and the heads 15 and 2() are finally drawn tightly together, as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the legs are firmly braced, the braces 5 being then in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the lip 9 overlying the said braces. The telescopic legs may be pulled out before or after the stand is opened out. The lower ends of the legs are preferably provided with suitable ball bea-ring casters 29. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as lnew and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is: l

1. In a-folding stand, the combination of foldable legs, different sets of relatively foldable legs, upwardly extending braces pivoted to the legs, a head connected tol said braces, downwardly extending braces pivoted to the legs, a 'head `connected to said downwardly extending braces, the 'upwardly and downwardly extendingbraces crossing folding' of the legs'and` braces.

3.' In a folding stand, the combination of foldable legs, different sets of relatively movable braces -for the legs, heads for the respective sets of braces, a screw carried by one of said heads and adapted to detachably screw into the other of said heads, whereby the stand is held in extended condition when the screw is engaged with the head, or, folded when .said screw is detached, and additional braces connecting the foldable legs.
