Be it known that I, EDWARD A. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Signs for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in display signs for automobiles, and has for its object to provide a sign for automobiles, to be mounted about the upper portion of the rear wheels. being constructed to serve as a combined fender and mud guard, and carrying translucent sign lettering, capable of illumination.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rear portion of an automobile showing the device of my invention in place.

Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical view of the same in section, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the wiring employed in illumination of the sign, illustrating the dry cell receptacle in section.

Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the mounting of the translucent sign members in relation to the illuminating means.

Fig. 6 is an elevation of the sign carrying member.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail in section of the hinged mounting of the sign-carrying member.

Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional detail of the blind employed to conceal the display matter when desired.

In the drawings, the mud guard 10 is provided on its inner side with the shield 11, and is secured to the body 12 by means of the brace 13.

Beneath the guard 10, at its outer edge, the fender, or sign carrying member 14 is mounted by means of the hinge 15, so that said fender 14 may be thrown outwardly and upwardly into the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 7 when it is desired to get access to the wheel 16.

The fender 14 is provided with horizontal apertures 17 on the rear side of which translucent strips or blocks 18 are mounted by means of the angle strips 19; the strips or blocks 18 being so slidably and removably mounted that new display matter can be substituted when desired.

The fender 14 is provided with perforations 20, to the end that the blind 21 may be secured to the fender 14 by the bolts 22 when it is desired to conceal the sign matter.

The guard 10 is provided with inwardly projecting bolts 23 which serve to normally hold the fender 14 in vertical position within said guard 10. Upon the rear face of the fender 14 I provide several series of electric lamps 24, for the illumination of the translucent blocks or strips 18, said lamps 24 being wired as indicated by the numeral 25, being energized from the cell 26, by means of the switch 27 The cells 26 are contained in a receptacle 28 on the under side of the guard 10, said receptacle 28 being provided with the hinged door 29 to give access to said cells 26.

The blocks or strips 18 may be made of translucent material with opaque lettering thereon, or said blocks or strips 18 may be constructed of opaque material having letters or other advertising symbols perforated therethrough, so as to be visible only when illuminated. by the lamps 24. By the described construction I am enabled to use the space beneath the guard 10 and outside of the wheel 16 for display advertising, visilole by day or night, and so mounted as to serve as a fender 14 for the prevention of accidental injury to the wheel 16, or to persons animals or other objects which might otherwise come in contact with the wheel 16; while said fender 14 is so mounted as to have no projection beyond the vertical plane of the outer edge of the guard 10.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a display sign for automobiles the combination of a mud-guard, a fender con-- forming to the contour thereof and movably mounted beneath said guard and having a translucent sign portion, and means for illuminating said translucent sign.

2. In a display sign for automobiles the combination of a mud-guard, a fender conforming to the contour thereof and provided with a translucent sign portion and hingedly mounted beneath said mud-guard, so that it may be swung outwardly therefrom, and means for illuminating said translucent s1 3. In a display sign for automobiles, the

combination with a mud-guard thereof, of a sign carrying member conforming to the contour of said mud-guard,means for hingedly securing said member to the under side of said mud-guard, whereby access may be had to the wheel of the vehicle by swinging said member outwardly, and means for securing said member against movement.

4. In a display sign for automobiles the combination with a mud-guard thereof, of a sign carrying member conforming to the contour of said mud-guard and fitting therewithin, said member being provided with a flange, means secured to said flange and to said mud-guard to permit a swinging movement of said member, and means for securing said member against swinging movement.

5. In a display sign for automobiles, the combination with a mud-guard thereof, of a sign carrying member conforming to the contour of said mud-guard and provided with a translucent portion, means for hingedly securing said member to the under side of said mud-guard whereby access may be had to the wheel of the vehicle by swinging said member outwardly, display matter carried by said translucent portion, and illuminating means mounted behind said translucent portion.

6. In a display sign for automobiles, the combination with a mudguard thereof, of a sign carrying member conforming to the contour of said mud-guard, means for movably securing said member to the under side of said mud-guard whereby access may be had to the wheel of the vehicle by swinging said member outwardly, means for securing said member against movement upon its hinge, a translucent sign carried by said member, illuminating means mounted behind said translucent sign, and a blind removably mounted upon said member and covering said illuminating means.
