GEAR-FULLER.
Application filed February 16, 1915.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, Guonon R. LANGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gear-Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to a tool for removing gears, pulleys or the likefrom shafts, when keyed thereon, and the'primary object of the invention is to provide a tool of this nature which is applicable for attachment to gears or pulleys of difierent diameters for removing them from a shaft, which is keyed thereupon, without mutilating the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tool as specified which is adjustable for application to gears or pulleys of different diameters.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side eleva'tlon of the 1mproved tool, showing the same applled to a gear for removing thesame from a shaft,
Fig. 2 isa front elevation of the tool,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the tool, and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a part of a block used in the construction of the tool.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates a tool as an entirety, which has a body plate 2. The body plate 2 1s substantially rectangular shaped in plan and is provided with two longitudinally extending slots 3 and 4, which commence a short distance inwardly from the ends of the bodyand extend inwardly toward the center thereof, being divided by a block 5, which is formed equidistant of the ends of the body 2. The body 1 has ribs 6 and 7 formed along the forward longitudinal edges thereof Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, ri id.
Serial 1 10. 8,699.
which ribs taper downwardly toward the outer end of the body, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The ribs 6 and 7 form guideways for slidable blocks 8 and 9 which are mounted within the slots 3 and 1. The blocks 8 and 9 have transversely extending flangeslO and 11 formed upon opposite sides thereof, the under surface of which flanges form shoulders for engaging the upper or outer surface of the body 1 alongside of the slots 3 and 1. The outer edges of the flanges 10 and 11 engage the inner surfaces of the ribs 6 and 7, which ribs form guides for regulating the movementof the blocks 8 and 9.
The blocks 8 and 9 are provided with internally screw threaded openings 12 extending therethrough, in which openings are seated screws lt and 15. The block 5 is provided with an internally screw threaded bore 16, which is of greater diameter than the bore 12' and has a screw 1? openings indicated at 23, which are formed in the web section of the gear or within the spoke of the same. The screw 17 is then adjusted so that the apex of the conical'end 18 will be seated in the centering opening formed in the end of the shaft, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. By rotating the screw 17, so as to feed it through the bore 16, the gear20 will be drawn toward the body 1 of the gear removing tool or gear puller and ed the shaft 21, thereby eliminating the usual tedious operation of driving the key 22 out of the keyway formed in the gear of the shaft, prior to removing the gear.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the advantages of construction and of the method of operation of the improved gear puller'will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains and, whilein the foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with variousfeatures of construction, it is cal conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of What is claimed. What is claimed is Means for pulling a gear from its shaft,
said gear being provided at opposite sides of the hub with threaded openings, consisting of a body plate having a central threaded opening and provided at opposite sides thereof with longitudinal slots, said body plate being recessed at its outer face at opposite sides of the slots to form longitudinal shoulders, rectangular blocks fitting the slots, and slidable therein and provided at their outer ends with opposite flanges engaging the shoulders of the body plate in wearer the recessed portions thereof, said blocks being also provided with threaded openings, side screws mounted in the threaded openings of the blocks and carried by the latter, said side screws being adapted to be engaged with the threaded openings of the gear to connect the latter with the body plate, and a central screw arranged in the central opening of the body plate and adapted to engage the end of the shaft and to be operated to pull the gear from the said shaft. 7
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
