IMPROVEMENT lN SAFETV-CONDUCTORS FOR POW DER-KEGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,688, dated January 9, 1872.
. thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the conductor with its operating devices.
The nature of my invention consists in the sliding fasteners at the sidesof the tubular conductor, .the spring thumb cover on the mouth of the tube, and the gum rings on the opposite end of the tube, as constructed, combined, and operated. The object of my inven tion is to insure greater safety to the miner while filling his cartridge with powder from the powder-keg, and preventing any sparks from the miners lampfrom coming in contact with the powder by fastening the one end of the conductor into the bore in the head of the keg and inserting the mouth into the cartridge, so that the conductor is closed at both ends, and the connection between the keg and the cartridge effectually preventing any powder from escaping to the outside while the powder from the keg is flowing into the mouth of the cartridge and as it is being withdrawn.
A represents the copper or metallic tube that is the conductor, with an inclined mouth, B, and straight across at the opposite end, with one or two gum-elastic rings, 0, to set flat against the head of the powder-keg to prevent any powder from escaping from the powder-keg. D D are two adjustable sliding fasteners on the inside of the tube A, regulated and held by the guides E E and set-screws Gr G, that hold the conductor A perfectly fast and tight to the powder-keg. The lower ends of the fasteners D D are angular hooks H H that are inserted into the aperture or bore of the head of the powder-keg. The set-screws G pass through the guides E at their center and the slots J J of the tube, and through the upper ends of the fasteners D D. The set-screws G are then drawn upward, which brings the angular hooks H tightly against the inside of the head of the powder-keg, and at the same time presses the lower end of the tube A, with its guinelastic rings 0, tightly and permanently to the head of the keg on its outside. The mouth B is opened and closed by an inclined cover, K, that has its inside lined with gum-elastic so as to lit closely in the mouth of the tube A, and the cover K is opened easily by the thumblever L, as it operates on its hinge M, and is again drawn down tightly to its place by the spiral spring N on the inside of the tube. While the powder is passing from the tube into the cartridge the miner keeps the mouth open in the cartridge by pressing upon the end ofthe thumb-lever L, and the moment that he lets go of the lever the spring N draws down the cover, and, with its gum lining, sweeps back the powder into the tubeA, eifectuall y clearing and closing the mouth.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sliding fasteners D D, the spring thumbcover K, the gum ringsO (l, and sliding guides E E, when constructed, combined, and operated as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
