To aZZ whom it mag concern? a Be it known that 1,,CHARLES S.,Ei.LIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook andsSt'ate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Inking Dating Stamps; and I dohereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact descrip' tion thereof, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters part of this specification. v This invention relates to a novel self inking dating stamp, and is'a continuation of my former application, SerialNo. 79,472.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide improvements in the nature of an attachment to anordinary dating stamp,
it comprising; in general terms, an inking pad carrier which normally holds the inking pad pressed against the. type at the printing line, and which is connected tov fixedand movable parts of the stamp. frame insuch manner when the stamp is depressed in. the printing operation the pad carrier is swung laterally.;away from the-type and when the parts are restored to non-printing position the. pad frame is swung backwardly into. position topress the pad against'the type.

The dating stamp is of a well known type, it embracing a U-shaped frame composed of side members 10, 10 and a top connecting said type band Wheels,the base bar and the bands are constructed and arranged in a well known manner, and need not be herein further shown or described in order to understand the applicationof my improvements to the stamp.
16 designates a base member which is lo cated below the stamp proper and normally constitutes the support for. the stamp. It is provided at its ends with upstanding arms 17,. which latter are formed with longitudinal slots 18 through which play the ends of the band wheel shaft 14. Said shaft 14 constitutes a guide for the upperv ends of thexarms 17. The side members 10 of the stamp frame are provided at their lower ends and on their outer faces with guide said guide slots 18, to thereby constitute, with the. shaft 14, two-point guides between the base frame and stamp to maintain the parts in accurate alinement. The base 16 is provided with a longitudinal slot 20 through which the types of the type bands 15 are projected for printing engagement with a surface therebelow when the stamp is depressed, as shown in Fig. 2.

The said pad frame is provided atone of its sides andat the ends thereof with lateral fixed arms 23 which are formed with upwardly and inwardly curved terminals 24. The guide arms 17 of the base frame are provided on the side of the stamp toward which the arms 23 project with laterally extending lugs 25. The said lugs 25 overlap the inwardly curved terminals 24 eras pad frame arms 23 near the bases of their curved terminals, and said terminals are off-set outwardly to fit flat against the outer faces of the lugs 25, as most clearly 7 shown in Fig. 3. The'said, lugs and arms are 7 pivotally connected by means of a shaft 26 which extends transversely across the frame and in rear thereof. 27, 27 designate links, one at each side of the stamp, which pivotally connect the ends'of the type band wheel.

Y A-spring 29 encircles the shaft 26, and one endis for'medwith a hooked portion 30 to engage overthe adjacent arm 28 and the other'end of said spring is formed with a hooked extension 31 to engage a stud 32 carried by the adjacent fixed lug 25. t
With the construction described when downward pressure is exerted on the hand piece the pivotal connection of the links 27 with the pad frame arms causes said pad frame to swing laterally away from the stamp about the rod 26 as a pivot, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the type are pressed to the surface to be printed free from obstruction. Moreover, by reason of the connection described, the pad frame is swung well away from the stamp frame'so as to permit ready access to the pad to apply ink thereto.
When pressure is released the spring 29 acts to swing the pad frame inwardly and u wardly to engage the pad with the type and also acts throughthe links 27 to restore the stampto its uppermost position.
It will be noted that the base frame guide arms '17 lie closely against the sides of the stamp frame and that there is an extending guiding contact between the inner facesof said arms and theouter faces of the frame,
sure d in part by the twopoint guiding contact of each of. the base framearms with the stamp afforded by the extension of the shaft 14 andthe lugs 19 into the guide'slots 18. Said shaft 14 and its connection with the links 27 serve to prevent the free ends of the arms 17 from spreading and. to maintain the guiding engagementflof theiinner faces of said armswith the outer faces ofthe said'mem'bers of'thestamp frame.

A self-inking dating stamp comprising a stamp frame and its type carrying members, an outer inking pad carrier and guide frame provided with upstanding arms which fit at their inner faces flat against the outer faces of and are guidingly connected to the stamp frame by means permitting the stamp to be depressed relatively to the base memher, a swinging inking pad carrier provided with laterally extending arms which/exteriorly overlap the outer faces of said arms, a shaft extending through pivot openings in the overlapping parts of said arms, a spring encircling said shaft and connected at one of its ends to said carrier and at its otherend to the outer frame, and connections between the carrier and stamp frame arranged exterior to the guide arms to swing the latter laterally away from the stamp upon the depression of the latter against the action of said spring.
6. A self-inking hand stamp comprising a complete normally hand inked stamp having a hand piece and provided with printing characters adapted to be composed at a printing line, an outer guide frame comprising a lower transverse slotted die plate and upstanding arms which have contact with the sides of the stamp frame, said arms being provided with slots to engage guides on the lower end of the stamp, means on the upper part of the stamp for engaging the upper ends of the arms to hold said arms from springing outwardly, a spring controlled pad carrier pivoted to said outer frame and connections. between said carrier and the stamp to actuate said carrier.
