Description

H. H. BUSH. ADIUSTABLE PEDES'TAL.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. as. me.
Patented May 8, 1917.
f: I E :n
HENRY I-I. BUSH, 0F AILVIUSKIEIGON, MICHIGAN.
ADJUSTABLE PEDESTAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 191%.
Application led February 16, 1916. Serial No. 78,660.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY IFI. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pedestals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel type of pedestal designed particularly to support game boards, which pedestal will be of simple construction, can be conveniently and e peditiously adjusted to any desired height, and will be durable and will effectively support a game board.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel type of retaining means for holding the adjustable parts of the pedestal in adjusted position.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure l is a vertical elevation of the pedestal,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the upper end of the pedestal, and
ig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the pedestal.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral l designates the lower base portion of the pedestal7 which consists of a hollow vertical body of rectangular configuration, and has its lower end provided with the supporting legs 2. Adjustably mounted within the base or body l, is a second rectangular shaped member 3, which has one side thereof provided with a metallic strip 4, which lies iiush with the adjacent side of the body 3. The base 1 has that side which is adjacent the metallic strip 4 provided with an opening through which extends a block 5, the said block having its inner end provided with a flanged portion 6, which ts within a recess 7 in the adjacent side of the base 3, and the said flange is secured to the side of the base l by means of the fastening elements 8. The block 5 has a bore extending therethrough, which threadedly receives the shank 9 of a screw, the outer end of the shank being provided with the winged head 10, by means of which the shank of the screw can be adjusted against the metallic strip 4 on the body 3 so as t0 hold the body in different adjusted positions.
Located at the upper end of the adjustable body 3 is a disk 11, which has a depending annular portion 12 formed on the under side thereof, and said disk and annular portion are provided with alined rectangular shaped openings for the reception of the upper end of the body 3.
Disposed above the disk 11 is a supporting head 14 formed by the intersecting arms 15, the said arms being secured, at their points of intersection, to a disk 16, which underlies the arms and is rotatably mounted on the disk 11 carried by the upper end of the body 3. The arms 15 are provided at their point of intersection with an opening which receives the upper end of a pin 17, the lower end of the pin extending through an opening in the disk 16 and rotatably received by a longitudinally extending bore 18 formed in the body 3 and which opens into the upper end of the body 3, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
The arms l5 extend outwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, and the upper ends of the arms l5 are provided with semispherical shaped pieces 19, upon which the game board, not shown, is adapted to rest, the said pieces 19 being formed of rubber or similar material, so as to cause frictional engagement between the board and the arms 15, so as to prevent lateral movement of the board.
By virtue of employing the particular construction of block 5, and mounting the same in the base 1 in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the outward strain on the shank 9 of the holding screw will be delivered to the adjacent side of the base l and thereby relieve the fastening elements 8 of strain.
What is claimed is:
1. In a pedestal, the combination with a hollow base having one side thereof provided with an opening and an internal annular recess surroimding the opening, of a body adjustably mounted within the base and having one side thereof provided with an elongated recess opposing the opening in the side of the base, a metal strip secured within the recess in the body, a block mounted within the opening in the side of the base,
a flange formed on the inner end of the block and engaging Within the recess in the side of the base and opposing the strip on the adjustable body, fastening elements extending through the flange and the adjacent side of the base, the said block having an opening therein, and means adjustable Withinl the opening in the block and against the strip carried by the body for holding the body in adjusted position.
2. A pedestal consisting of a pair of telescoping members, means iior holding the members in adjusted position, the inner` member having a longitudinally extending bore therein extending in from the outer end five cents each, by
thereof, a disk carried by the outer end of the inner member, a rotatable disk mounted on the irstmnentioned disk, a pair of intersecting and supporting arms resting on the rotatable disk, and a shaft extending through the point of intersection between the arms and through the disk and rotatably received by the bore in the inner member.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
