WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed February 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM F. HAJEK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to removable window sash constructions, and more particularly to that class of constructions which permit of the removal of the window sash by providing a removable inner stop or guide therefor, the object of the invention being to provide improved attaching and detaching means for thesev guides or stops.
The invention consists in the peculiar arrangement of the detachable connections whereby the same are guarded against accidental or juvenile removal but may be readily removed by adults.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises the usual window sashes 6 and 7 mounted in the usual frame 8 in the usual manner. The lower portion of the inner guide molding 9 for the sash 6 on each side is made readily detachable so as to permit of one side of the sash being swung inwardly into the room to give access to the outside of the glass from the interior of the room. A similar construction may be provided for the upper sash 7 but the description and showing of the construction of one sash will suffice for both.
The ready detachment of the molding strip 9 is accomplished by providing a plurality of openings 10 therethrough and positioning screws or other headed studs 11 in the frame 8 opposite said openings. A

substantially diamond-shaped closure plate 12 is provided with securing tangs 13 at its top and bottom by means of which the same may be secured to strip 9 over the openings 10 therein. Each of the plates 12 is provided at its opposite sides with perforated lugs 1% adapted to serve as a pivotal mounting for lugs 15 on the sides of a bell crank locking member 16. One arm of the bell crank 16 is extended upwardly and inwardly and provided with a depending flange 17 having a notch 18 therein adapted to engage over the head of the stud 11, as best indicated in Fig. 3. The other arm 19 of the bell crank is extended inwardly and downwardly, as shown, suffieiently to engage the bottom of the opening 10 to limit the downward swing of the upper arm of the bell crank so as to facilitate automatic engagement of said arm with its screw. An opening 20 is provided in plate 12 opposite arm 19 to permit of the insertion of a slender instrument such as a hairpin or the like to engage said arm 19 and raise the flange 17 out of engagement with the corresponding stud 11, thus permitting of the ready removal of the molding for swinging of the sash, as explained above. After the sash has been washed on the outer side, it is returned to its original position and the molding strips 9 replaced.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a windowframe, a sash slidable in said frame; a molding strip constituting a guide for the inner side of said sash, said strip being provided with a plurality of openings extending therethrough; headed studs in the frame opposite said openings; a plate secured over the outer side of each of said openings; and a locking member in the form of a bell crank pivotally mounted on each of said plates in the corresponding opening, the upper arm of said bell crank being extended inwardly and provided with a depending notched flan 'e ada ated to en 'a 'e the corres ondin 23 b C: b
stud, the other arm of said bell crank depending and extending inwardly, there being an opening in said plate opposite said de pending arm, substantially as described.
2. A fastening for Window moldings or the like comprising a plate having securing tangs at opposite ends thereof and perforated lugs at opposite sides thereof; and a locking member pivoted in said lugs, said locking member being in the form of a bell crank one arm of which extends upwardly and inwardly, the inner end of said arm being provided with a depending notched 15 flange adapted to engage a headed. stud, and the other arm of said bell crank depending inwardly, said plate being provided With an opening opposite said depending arm, substantially as described.
