Description

HARVEY L. WELLS, OFOQUAWKA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY CHURN-DASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,505, dated January 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. W'ELLs, of Oquawka, in the county of Henderson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghurns, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which I Figure I is a perspective View of my churn,
with the sides broken away to show the shaft,
ribs, and dasher, inside. Fig. II is the shaft, dasher, and roller detached. Fig. III is a section of dasher and shaft on line .1: ac.
The object of my invention is to produce in churning the greatest and most thorough agitation of the cream at each revolution of the churn-dasher.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is the casing of my churn, having five or more sides. gles where the sides join Ilplace the ribs to a a, running vertically from the bottom of the churn to .the top, for the purpose of aiding in the agitation of the cream. B is the shaft, and has its lower bearingin the bottom of the churn. At its top is a small roller, 0, covered with a In the an-' coating of India rubber, c. The dasher D, which traverses the shaft B, has beveled ends, and near each end a beveled slot, 0, as shown in Fig. II. This particular shape aids verymaterially in the breaking up or agitation of the cream, and in conjunction with; the ribs or a performs its work very effectually. The top of the churn E is made in two sections, a hole'at the center allowing the shaft to pass through it. To one section of the top is at tached a frame, F, having standards f f and bearing 70 for the shaft. Through the standards f f work a shaft, 6, with a crank, t'. This crank i and shaft 2" work awheel, H, whose face bears against the rubber-covered periphery of the roller 0. When the crank t'is turned and the wheel H revolves the friction against the roller 0 is such as to causeit to revolve and turn the shaft and dasher, and the churning process commences.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The dasber D with its beveled slots 0 and beveled ends, in combination with the shaft B and ribs a a, as and for the purpose set forth.
