COVER FOR SERVICE-BOXES OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917.
Application filed December 23, 1916. Serial N 0. 138,582.
To all "whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Service-Boxes or the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in covers for service boxes or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby a cover of this general character may be read i ly and quickly applied in operative position and be effectively maintained in such applied position.
The invention consists in the details of combination and arparts of my improved cover whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view taken through a cover constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position upon a service box;
Fig. 2 is a view in bottom plan of the cover as herein embodied;
Fig. 8 is a view in end elevation of the bolt as herein employed; and
Fig. 4 is a view in top plan of the button as herein disclosed, detached.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the upper end portion of a service pipe or the like having its top or entrance end defined by an inwardly directed annular flange 2 upon which is adapted to rest the marginal portion of the cover C. The cover C is provided at a predetermined point inwardly of its periphery with the annular flange 8 adapted to snugly fit within the opening defined by the annular flange 2, anr said flange 3 is of a width substantially equal to the width of the flange 2.
he flange 3 is provided at a predetermined point with an outwardly directed lug 4 adapted to underlie the flange 2 and in order to impart a maximum of strength to said lug, the same is braced by the web- 5 connected to the under surface of the cover U and the adjacent inner face of the flange 3.
At a point diametrically opposed to the lug 4:, the cover 0 is provided with the depressed portion 6 affording a substantially annular chamber and the bottom of said chamber preferably at its center is provided with an opening 7 in which is loosely mounted the cylindrical portion 8 of the bolt B Said cylindrical portion of the shank of the bolt being positioned immediately adjacent the head 9. The remaining portion of the shank of the bolt B is provided with the opposed flat faces 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to,
while the head '9 of the bolt B is preferably provided with five sides so that a special tool will have to be employed in order to rotate said bolt and whereby the use of the ordinary monkey or S wrench is avoided. It is also to be noted that the chamber 6 is of such a depth as to have the head 9 entirely housed therein.
11 denotes a. button of the depressed portion 6 and provided at its axial center with the opening 12 having opposed faces 14 flattened, whereby it will be perceived that when the shank of the bolt B is disposed through said opening 12, the button 11 will be caused to rotate in unison with and in the same general direction as the bolt.
15 denotes a cotter adapted to be disposed pin or other member point outwardly of the button 11 so that said cotter pin 15 or the like serves to effectively hold the button 11 against movement tudinally of the shank of the bolt and preferably in contact with the bottom of the depressed portion 6.
The peripheral portion of the button 11 is provided with the cam or beveled shoulder 17 partly surrounding the button 11 with the free ends of said cam or beveled shoulder 17 constituting the low points, while the high point a of the cam or shoulder is at a point substantially midway the separated ends of said cam or shoulder.
The cam or shoulder 17 is adapted to underlie the flange 2 hereinbefore referred to and it will be perceived that upon rotating the bolt B, the cam or shoulder 17 will underlying the bottom I through a transverse opening 16 in the shank of the bolt B at alongihave a wedging action upon said flange 2 and thereby assure the requisite engagement of the cover O upon the service pipe 1 and will also effectively lock said cover in applied position.
It is to be noted that the separated ends of the cam or shoulder 17 are spaced apart a sufficient distance as to readily permit the cover C being applied to the pipe 1 as it is to be understood that in applying the cover the button 11 is adapted to be adjusted to bring the high point a remote from the portion of the flange 2 with which said button is adapted to coact.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cover constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a body provided with Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the an opening and having an inwardly directed annular flange adjacent its open end, a cover for said opening, said cover being provided with a depressed portion, a bolt rotatably disposed through the depressed portion of said cover and provided in its outer end with a head, the portion of the bolt underlying the depressed portion being angular in cross section, a button slidably engaged with the angular portion of the belt, a marginal portion of said button being cut away to permit the passage of said button beyond the flange, the portion of the button coacting with the flange being beveled, said beveled portion extending around the marginal portion of the button and having separatec ends, the space providing the cut away portion of the button, the high point of the beveled portion of the button being arranged substantially midway between the separated ends of said beveled portion, and a removable member disposed through the bolt inwardly of the button for holding the button against movement longitudinally of the bolt.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. HALL.
