Description

G. V. SUTTON.
HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED 58.24.1916.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY ,QMmS, Patented Apr. 24,1917.
ra rnnr current,
GEORGE V. SUTTON, OF KEO'IA, COLORADO.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24:, 1917.,
Application filed February 24, 1916. Serial No. 80,249.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonon V. SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keota, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges and more particularly to the class of hinges which are employee for swinging gates between openings in fences or between openings provided in stock yards where several pens are brought together at one supporting post.
A further object of the invention. is the provision of a hinge for a gate that will allow the gate to swing in a complete circle around the fence post.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a hinge which consists of a com paratively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a fence post and a gate showing the hinges attached thereto;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the bracket;
Fig. i is a perspective view of the compcnsating leaf;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the gate leaf.
The fence post A has attached thereto, the bracket 1, which consists of a rectangular plate bent to form a U-shaped bracket having legs 2 and 3. lThe face of the bracket which is adapted to be secured to the fence post A has apertures through which screws, bolts, or other securing members are adapted to pass for securing the bracket securely to a fence post. Openings 4: are provided at the end of each leg of the bracket. The gate B has mounted thereon, a leaf 2 which is provided with apertures for the reception of fastening screws or bolts at one end thereof and has at its opposite end a knuckle 5 I through which pintles are adapted to extend.
An intermediate compensating plate. or leaf 6 has knuckles 7 provided at one end Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereof and a knuckle 8 at its oppostie end. The knuckles 7 are adapted to be fixed in registration with the knuckle 5 of the plate 2 and apintle 9 extended therethrough so that a free swinging movement can be obtained. The knuckle 8 is adapted to be placed in registration with the apertures lof .the bracket 1 and a pintle 10 extended therethrough.
From this construction, it will be observed that the gate may be swung in a complete circle and may also be made to close openings which are provided in fences radiating from the post A, even though the openings be of a greater or less width than each other.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that a very simple and durable hinge has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. 1 desire it to be understood, however, that slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
hat is claimed is 3- In combination with a gate and a gate post, of a strip of material bent to form a Ll-shaped bracket having its central portion fastened to the said gate post and its ends extended into the space between the gate post and the gate, a leaf having one end reduced and provided with a knuckle, the said leaf being fastened to the said gate and in longitudinal alinement with the said U-shaped bracket, an intermediate leaf having a pair of knuckles formed at its end for registration with the knuckle on the end of the said first leaf and having its opposite end provided with an elongated knuckle pivotally connected to the terminals of the said bracket, the Width of the said first mentioned leaf being less than the distance between the said terminals of the bracket whereby the said leaf may be swung into the space between the sides of the bracket, whereby the said intermediate leaf may extend toward the gate post and be disposed between the sides of the said bracket for permitting the said first mentioned leaf to extend outwardly from the sides thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEQRGE V. SUTTON.
