Application filed May 13, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, vViLLn-wr IV. JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mona, inthe county of Polk and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Barrels for I/Vatches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the aceonr panying drawings.
The invention pertains to spring barrels for watches, an object being to provide better means for fastening the outer end of the main spring to the barrel.
ther objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the ensuing description.
The accompanying drawings show one form in which the invention has been put in practice.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved spring wheel.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but with a portion of the cover plate broken away.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View of Fig. 1, the spring and its arbor being omitted.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective view of the barrel, looking a little downward and in the direction of the arrow l: of Fig. 2; the cover-plate, spring, and arbor being omitted.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are fragmental perspective Views in the same direction as Fig. 4, showing modified formations of the outer end of the spring.
Referring to the several figures, in all of which like characters of reference designate like parts, the improved barrel shown includes the usual bottom 10; the annular side wall 11 integral with the bottom; and the cover-plate 12 which rests in the usual rabbet 13 in the side wall.
In arranging to fasten the outer end of the spring 14, said end is provided with a depending pin portion 15 which extends down into an opening 16 in the bottom 10, this pin portion being integral with the spring as shown in Fig. 5 or Fig. 6, or formed on a separate plate 17 which is riveted to the spring as shown in Fig. 7.
To keep the end of the spring 14 and its pin portion 15 from rising up out of engagement with the opening 16, the upper edge of the side wall 11 is provided with an inwardly extending lug 18 over said opening, this lug being integral with said Specification of Letters Patent.

To allow the s 'ing l t to be put in place with its pin portion 15 in the opening 16 directly under the lug 18, said opening er:- tends from under the lug a considerable dis tance slot, so that the spring may be put in place with its pinportion in the unobstructed end of the slot and then slid in under the lug.
The slotted opening 16 is extended from under the lug 18 in a direction opposite the pull of the spring 1% in order to hold the end of the latter under said lug in proper assemblage.
In addition to holding the end of the spring 14 down and the pin portion 15 in the opening 16, the lug 18 is undercut at its edges in order to fit in a correspondingly shaped gap 19 in the edge of the cover-plate 12 and hold one side of the latter down in the rabbet 18.
The opposite side of the cover-plate 12 may be held down in the rabbet 13 by any suitable means, for example, a screw 20 which screws into the bottom 10 of the barrel.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wall around its edges, means for fastening the end of a spring to said bottom, said means being so arranged that the spring must be raised upward from said bottom to be disengaged therefrom, the annular wall having a lug projecting inward over the end of the spring.
2. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wall around its edges, means for fastening the end of a spring to said bottom, said means being so arranged that the spring must be raised upward from said bottom to be disengaged therefrom and also arranged to allow a lateral movement of the fastened end of said spring with re spect to said bottom, the annular wall hava lug projecting inward over the fastened end of said spring.
3. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wall around its edges, a spring supported by said bottom portion within said wall, the end of the spring being fastened to said bottom portion, the fastening being of such character that the end of the spring must be raised upward from said bottom portion to be disengaged therefrom, the wall having a lug projecting inward over the fastened end of said spring.
(i. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wallaround its edges, a spring supported by said bottom portion within said wall, the end of the spring being fastened to said bottom portion, the fastening being of such character that the spring must be raised upward from said bottom portion to be disengaged therefrom and arranged to allow a lateral movement of the fastened end of said spring with respect to the bottom, the annular wall having a projecting lug to prevent the end of the spring from being raised upward.
5. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wall around its edges, a spring supported by said bottom portion within'said wall, the end of the spring being fastened to said bottom portion, the fastening means for the spring being so arranged that the spring must be raised upward from said bottom portion to be disengaged therefrom, the side wall having a lug projecting inward over the fastened end of the spring, and means for allowing the fastened end of the spring to be moved laterally to avoid said lug before being raised upward.
(3. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having an annular wall around its edges, the bottom portion having an elongated opening adapted to receive the fastening member of a spring, the side wall having alug projecting inward over one end of said opening.
7. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having a side wall, the bottom portion havin an elongated opening, a spring lying on the bottom portion and having a depending pin engaging the opening, the side wall having a lug projecting inward over one end of the opening.
8. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having a side wall, a cover-plate adapted to rest on the wall, the wall having an in wardly-projecting under-cut lug engaging one edge of the cover-plate.
9. In a spring barrel, a bottom portion having a side wall, said side wall being rabbeted, a cover-plate resting in the rabbet of the wall, the side wall having an under-out lug projecting into the edge of the coverplate, and means co-act-ing with the lug to hold the cover-plate down in the rabbet of the wall.
